- Erratum: Reads, “Togashi Kazuki 4F/4C 0HR 8G 2PH Dragon Clan • Samurai • Monk Kazuki has +1F for each Ring you control. Open: Target another of your Personalities. Rules Q&A
- Q: How does the interaction between Kazuki's open ability (Open: Set a target Personality's Force equal to Kazuki's.) and Tsukimi's trait (Your Samurai at Tsukimi's location have a Force bonus equal to the highest Chi of any Shugenja you control.) work?
Let's say I control both of them and a chi 3 shugenja. If I use Kazuki's ability on either of himself or Tsukimi does their force become 8 (Kazuki's base 5 plus 3 for the shugenja's chi) or 11 (Kazuki's base current force before the ability is used plus an addition three from the shugenja.)?
Thanks
A: In your scenario, after using Kazuki's ability on any Samurai target, the target's Force would be 8.
Tsukimi's continuous bonus, or any pre-existing bonus, is not re-added after changing someone's current Force. It is factored into the change beforehand. "Setting" to a value is just giving a new appropriate bonus or penalty in order to reach the value. Let's say you target a Samurai with a base 3F with Kazuki's ability in your example. The Samurai's current Force before that is 6F (3F + 3F from Tsukimi's trait). Kazuki's ability would then give him +2F, in order for his Force to become 8 and match Kazuki. Brook Cunningham, "Shiba Tsukimi and Togashi Kazuki", 31 Jul 2010 - Q: Okay if I have a Togashi Dai, Togashi Kazuki, Bowed ring of void and a unbowed Harmonious temple. My opponents first action is to Unexpected Betrayal's my Togashi Dai, For my action can I use the battle action on Harmonious temple I target Kazuki and my bowed ring of void. Can Togashi Dai use his trait to pay the cost of bowing instead of void?
A: Perform: A Personality or Follower is performing an action if its controller is the player taking the action and any of these things is true: * The action comes from an ability on the Personality or Follower. * The action comes from an ability on an Item or Spell in the Personality’s unit. * The Personality or Follower was targeted by targeting in the ability’s constraints block (between the two colons).
This list does not include "using a trait to pay a cost of an action". Togashi Dai is not performing the action on Harmonious Temple when he bows to pay the cost. Alex Jones, "Togashi Dai and Unexpected Betrayal", 4 Dec 2008 - Q: If you have 2 rings in play, and a tsi blade equipped to Kazuki. And you copy that 8 force to someone else. Can you then equip another tsi blade to that personality to make its force now 10?
A: Yes. "Setting" a stat to a value does not mean the stat can no longer be modified.
You may be misinterpreting this: Zen Faulkes, "Togashi Kazuki (again -sigh)", 11 Mar 2008 - Q: It locks in at a set value and never changes until it expires at the End of the Turn.
A: Marty is referring to the size of the bonus here, not the value of the stat. Zen Faulkes, "Togashi Kazuki (again -sigh)", 11 Mar 2008 - Q: (D)oes the ruling to this count for any card that gives force bonuses?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Togashi Kazuki (again -sigh)", 11 Mar 2008 - Q: Battle: Negate all current Force bonuses and penalties to cards at this battlefield from actions.
Open: Target another of your Personalities. Set his Force to Kazuki’s Force or his Chi to Kazuki’s Chi.
Any change in a stat’s value is considered a bonus (if increased) or penalty (if decreased), with the following exceptions:
A: As found in the Comprehensive Rules: Stats
Kazuki gives out either a Bonus or a Penalty when his ability actually changes a stat's value from one number to a different number. Either way Justly Earned Victory will stop that. Martin Lund, "Togashi Kazuki vs Justly Earned Victory", 4 Dec 2007 - Q: Togashi Kazuki Open: Target another of your Personalities. Set his Force to Kazuki’s Force or his Chi to Kazuki’s Chi.
Kazuki currently has 4F and Togashi Bob has 1F + 1F from a weapon. I use Kazuki's open action to set Togashi Bob's force to 4. Does Togashi Bob then get an additional +1 from the attached weapon?
A: No. His current force before Kasuki's bonus is 2, so he gets a +2F bonus to match Kazuki's 4 Force.
I'd recommend you transfer the +1F weapon to Kazuki first. Then you'll wind up with two 5F Personalities instead of two 4F Personalities. Martin Lund, "Togashi Kazuki and force bonuses from weapons", 2 Nov 2007 - Q: In rules we see that
"During the Combat Segment, the only action types that can be taken are Battle and Reaction Actions. Battle actions must follow the additional rules of Presence and Location."
In samurai the cards are cleary marked so they have not problem so, for example,
TOGASHI KAZUKI (SE print)
Dragon Clan • Monk • Samurai Kazuki has +1F for each Ring you control.Open: Target another of your Personalities. Set his Force to Kazuki's Force or his Chi to Kazuki's Chi.
we see that we cannot use his abbilty during the battle action segement, but with cards prior to SE there isn't this distinction, for example with
YORITOMO UTEMARO (KD)
Mantis Clan • Samurai • Hero • Naval • Experienced • Unique. Open: Pay 3 Gold: Target a Follower in play or in any player’s discard pile. Attach it to a target Personality you control, waiving costs and ignoring its Honor Requirement. Lose Honor equal to the Follower’s Honor Requirement if you do not own it.
¿Could his action be used during the battle segment?
Can his actiong be used during the battle action segment?
A: This is really a tournament judge question. See the Legacy format forum, who are giving thought to these kinds of questions.
There is no "grandfather" clause for Open actions in the Samurai Edition rules. Zen Faulkes, "open actions on cards prior SE", 5 Jul 2007
