Rules Q&A
- Q: 2. Togashi Satsu is attacking province A; Egg of Satsu is attacking province B. We resolve province A first:
2a. Egg of Satsu casts Sharing Strength on Satsu at province A. 2b. Satsu then casts Chasing Osano-Wo back to the Egg at province B. 2c. Egg of Satsu then casts Chasing Osano-Wo back to Satsu at province A.
Was 2b a legal play? It seems to satisfy Presence and Relevance, though Satsu at province A just happens to not bow when he casts the kiho.
A: Kiho target their casters, and that's enough to satisfy Relevance if the caster is at the Current Battle, accord to page 81 of the Diamond Edition Rulebook. Martin Lund, "Rules for 7 October 2004", 11 Oct 2004 - Q: Questions that came up in play today.
Togashi Satsu is bowed. Am I able to target him with, say, Sharing Strength, or any kiho for that matter, and play the kiho?
A: A Personality who can cast Kihos without needing to bow may cast Kihos while bowed as long as the Kiho itself does not require an unbowed Personality. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 17 March 2004", 18 Mar 2004 - Q: Can Togashi Satsu, if he casts a kiho when bowed, use the Ring of Air to unbow?
A: No. "After one of your Shugenja or Monks bows..." (card text). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 6 November 2003", 6 Nov 2003 - Q: Hi,
In the EE Comprehensive rules, I can no longer find a reference under "Challenges and Duels" that restricts the challenger to being unbowed. It seems (my guess) that this was relegated to specific card text, as per the Oracle text for the classical Iaijutsu Challenge:
"Limited: Choose your performing unbowed Personality and target another player's Personality: Your Personality challenges him. He may refuse; if he did, dishonor him and his controller loses 7 Honor. The winner's controller gains 5 Honor. Destroy the duel's loser."
My question then is: can a bowed personality who ignores the cost of bowing to perform Kiho strategies (e.g. Shinsei, Togashi Satsu experienced 1 through 3, etc.) perform a Facing Your Devils, given the Oracle text on that Kiho is:
"Battle/Open: Bow your performing Monk or Shugenja and target a Personality: Your Personality challenges the target. The Personality's controller may discard cards with a total Focus Value greater than the challenger's Chi; if he did, his Personality may refuse. Destroy the duel's loser."
With no specific reference to the challenging personality being unbowed?
A: The lack of "unbowed" in Facing Your Devils was an oversight on my part, sorry. It was from the era of implied targeting, where you implicitly targeted your performer, and while not from an era with implicit need for a challenger to be unbowed, it WAS from an era when your own bowed cards were never legal targets. Fixing! Brook Cunningham, "Facing Your Devils with a bowed personality", 23 Aug 2012 - Q: Togashi Satsu Exp., Exp.2 and Exp.3 all have the trait "Satsu need not bow to cast Kihos." But can he still cast Kihos if he is already bowed? The argument is whether the trait can or cannot waive a cost that could not be paid in the first place.
A: Yes, as long as the Kiho action's constraints block doesn't call for targeting an unbowed Personality to perform it.
In general, costs can be waived or substituted even if you can't pay them. For example, if you waive a card's Gold cost, you needn't have sufficient unbowed Gold lying around to do so. Brook Cunningham, "Togashi Satsu (Exp.): "Satsu need not bow to cast Kihos."", 17 Sep 2008 - Q: My opponent recruited Togashi Satsu EXP4. I then killed Satsu. So now we have a Unique Togashi Satsu DEAD in a discard pile. When I went to recruit my Togashi Satsu EXP4. My opponent said he didn't think it was legal, and that Dead personalities count as in play for Uniqueness purposes. Is this correct, or an old ruling that is no longer valid?
A: It's not correct, and it has never been a rule. Zen Faulkes, "Dead Unique Personalities", 9 Sep 2007
