Rules Q&A
- Q: Ok, so I'm playing a WoH or Legacy game and running Togashi's Guidance and Togashi's Guidance Exp. Assuming that I have Togashi's Guidance (the non-exp version) in play, and Togashi's Guidance Exp comes into play, my understanding is that the second Celestial does not enter play, and the first Celestial is not discarded, since they are Unique cards with the same title (or specifically because the one that wants to enter play is a Unique card with the same title as a card in play).
Shrine to the Heavens doesn't seem to make a difference... either way, the second Celestial won't enter play because it's Unique and there is a card by the same name already in play (thus, steps C and D of celestial resolution never happen).
So my question is:
If Togashi's guidance (non-exp) leaves play (presumably because I use the Reaction on it), what happens to the other guidance? There doesn't seem to be any mechanic to re-initiate Celestial Resolution outside of having a THIRD celestial in the deck to re-trigger it. It seems like once the second Celestial pops up and fails to enter play, it's just stuck there in my provinces until I discard it at the end of a Dynasty phase... I can't do anything with it. Is that right?

Shrine to the Heavens, for completeness
And for those playing along at home:
A: Correct, and you're looking in exactly the right place. Celestials only try to enter play when they're revealed; if you had an effect to turn the province facedown, then discarded the original Celestial from play, the Celestial would enter play when revealed again. Jon Palmer, "Multiple experienced versions of the same Celestial in WoH", 17 Jul 2012 - Q: Enlightenment victory represents finding a path of insight beyond the material world, reflecting on experience in war and peace through the philosophies of the Five Elements. A player wins through an Enlightenment Victory after the start of one of his or her turns if he or she has in play five Ring cards, each with a different element keyword, and each of which last entered play by its own text (as opposed to other effects that can put a Ring into play).
A: Since Experienced Togashi's Guidance uses it's effect to put the Ring in to play, it will not count towards the Enlightenment victory condition. Ben Higgins, "Togashi's Guidance and Enlightenment Victory", 24 May 2012 - Q: I have Togashi's Guidance in play. I have 5 cards in hand, my opponent has 2 cards in hand. I want to discard Ring of the Void for its effect (which would be no effect because i have more cards in hand), and then react with Togashi's Guidance to put the Ring of the Void into play.
A: Fine.
This is a variation of, "Is an action legal if an effect can't happen?" This is a question that is often -- indeed, one might even say frequently -- asked. As such, it can be found here: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_FAQ#Is_an_actio ... _happen.3F
The Good Faith rule concerns targeting and costs, not effects. http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Abilities_and_a ... Faith_Rule Zen Faulkes, "Ring of the Void with more cards", 24 Apr 2010 - Q: Togashi's Guidance:
Text Kami • Unique Dragon Clan players have no maximum hand size.
Reaction: After an action ends during which any Rings entered the discard pile from your hand or from your focused cards, if you are a Dragon Clan player, discard this card: Put one of those Rings into play or into your hand.
QUESTION: Can I discard Ring Of Water to move someone in/out of battle as my fourth battle action, then react with the Guidance to put it back in my hand, then immediately Play Ring Of Water?
A: "After an action ends" and "after an action resolves" have the same timing (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Abilities_and_a ... ction_ends).
Because the Ring of Water enters play through a trait, it will always have to be played before the Reaction on Togashi's Guidance (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Timing#Resolvin ... _conflicts).
Because you have to play the Ring before you can use the Reaction, and you can't "hold on" to an entering play trigger, this does not appear to work. You can get the Ring of Water into your hand, but the opportunity to play it will have passed. Just by a hair. Zen Faulkes, "Togashi's Guidance", 11 Nov 2009 - Q: Togashi's Guidance: Reaction: After an action ends during which any Rings entered the discard pile from your hand or from your focused cards, if you are a Dragon Clan player, discard this card: Put one of those Rings into play or into your hand.
Imperial Artificer: Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold. If this pays for a Follower or Item attaching to a Samurai, you may draw a card, then discard a card.
I announce that I intend to attach a 2 gold cost weapon, normally in as a limited action. As a cost of that action, I bow artificer to pay the cost. This is paying for a weapon, so I draw a card and then discard. The discarded card is a ring. I continue through with the action and attach the weapon. After the action resolves, can I play the ring I discarded from artificer? An *action* does not discard a card, but rather the trait of artificer. The trait was triggered during the action.
A: Togashi's Guidance does not require that the cards enter the discard pile because of the action, only during it. You may play the Ring after discarding it due to Imperial Artificer's trait. Dan Jacobson, "Togashi's Guidance + Artificer", 21 Oct 2009 - Q: I have Togashi's Guidance in play. May I use Changing Path, naming False Ring of Fire to search for and immediately play the Ring?
A: Which Togashi's Guidance? Togashi's Guidance nonexp means you have no maximum hand size, which means you can't play False Ring of Fire.
Also, Changing Paths only triggers off Rings that enter play via Traits. False Ring of Fire enters play by an action, so they don't interact.
Also: Changing Paths won't let you search for any of the Rings, that... yeah Alex Jones and Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 17 Nov 2023
