Rules Q&A

• Q: [A] Crane player uses the Egg of P'an Ku to copy his own Exp Kurohito. Next, the original Exp Kurohito loses a duel, perhaps to Toku, and dies. Can his Crane opponent: a. play an Egg if P'an Ku b. play Exp Kurohito
A: No to both. See the Egg of P'an Ku mini-FAQ, here: http://pages.sbcglobal.net/sarah-and-zen/l5r/zcotw~1.html#25 Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 22 October 2003", 22 Oct 2003
• Q: He does not have a "phantom bonus" from focusing. He has a real bonus. Not everyone knows how large it is, but it's really there.
So what happens if Toku starts focussing some Lesser Oni against someone with Lord Moon's Bones?
A: Each time he focuses, he gets +0 Chi from the focus and -1C from the Bones' effect. At some point, this will kill him. Jeff Alexander, "post for 29 January 2003", 30 Jan 2003
• Q: So then Toku would commit seppuku before the "dishonor Toku" effect occurred, right? The 7 pt loss happens before the dishonoring, as it is printed first on the card.
Yes, though it shouldn't matter. Seppuku also negates any dishonoring to the Personality coming from the same source as the honor loss. I *thought* this was in the Dark Allies rulebook. Apparently I'm mistaken.
Ide Michisuna would be why it could matter, as he negates the re-honoring effect of seppukku, and Toku's controller would lose 2 honor.
A: Not if Toku is already dead and in the discard pile, which is the case if Toku seppukus when the action first targets him or when the honor is lost. Jeff Alexander, "post for 12 November 2002", 13 Nov 2002
• Q: Dark Lord's Favor
  Here's the setup.
It's your opponent's turn. You have Toku on the table.
Can you use Dark Lord's Favor to take the 7 Honor Loss, as an Open action dishonor Toku, and then seppuku him to knock the honor loss on the head?
  Yes.
I am probably being nitpicky here, but the honor loss and being dishonored are two separate sentences, and as such, don't happen at the same time, correct?
  Correct.
So the scenario runs more like this...
  1) Lose 7 honor. Does Toku commit sep? No, lose the 7 honor.
  2) Use the Open Action, Toku is dishonored. Does Toku commit sep? Yes, Toku dies honorably.
Samurai cannot commit their inherent seppuku to becoming dishonored -- only to being involved in an honor loss. Toku cannot seppuku at step 2.
Also, by the rulebook, samurai commit seppuku upon being targeted by an action, taking an action, or making a decision that will result in a loss. Toku has to seppuku as soon as he is targeted by Dark Lord's Favor, which is in plenty of time to catch and reduce the 7 point loss.
So then Toku would commit seppuku before the "dishonor Toku" effect occurred, right? The 7 pt loss happens before the dishonoring, as it is printed first on the card.
A: Yes, though it shouldn't matter. Seppuku also negates any dishonoring to the Personality coming from the same source as the honor loss. I *thought* this was in the Dark Allies rulebook. Apparently I'm mistaken. Jeff Alexander, "post for 11 November 2002", 12 Nov 2002

• Q: FROM THE RULES ARCHIVE Experienced and ExperiencedKYD cards are separate cards. Both may be in a deck, and NEITHER IMPINGES UPON THE OTHER'S UNIQUENESS. For overlaying, ignore the KYD completely. [JA, 27 September 2002]
"..NEITHER IMPINGES UPON THE OTHER'S UNIQUENESS.."
Does it refer to deck construction only? Can't I have both Toku Exp.2 kyd and Toku Exp.X in play at the same time?
A: You can put both the Exp2 and the Exp2-KYD version in your deck despite both having the same title and the "Unique" trait, just like you can put both the Exp2 and Exp version in. Likewise, you cannot have both the Exp2 and the Exp2-KYD version in play at the same time, just like you cannot have both the Exp2 and the Exp version in play. Jeff Alexander, "post for 30 October 2002", 31 Oct 2002
• Q: For instance: Toku bows to give one of his followers +1F and then unbows because he's Toku and he's just that cool.
My opponent drops an ISOF. Does Toku's follower lose that extra 1 force?
  A: No. Jeff Alexander, "post for 7 December 2001", 8 Dec 2001
• Q: 1) If there are only a Toku in play when an "Imperial Levying" appears in my province what's happen? he is destroyed even with 0 force? Or "0" isn't force for this purpose?
A: Toku, being the highest force personality in the whole Empire, is summoned to serve the Emperor. However, due to his current lack of military prowess (but great potential!), the Emperor neglects to speak of you as highly as he might have, should you have contributed a greater force to his cause. In other words, Toku vanishes and you gain 0 honor. This is an actual 0 point gain, and can be Reacted to. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for August 22nd, Part Two", 22 Aug 2001
• Q: In response to this thread:

  1. I have Michio XP in play. 2. My opponent has only Toku in play and, in his hand, only actions that require unbowed personalities (+Determination). 3. My opponent announces and resolves Determination targetting Toku. 4. I bow Toku with Michio XP. 5. My opponent has no valid actions that he can announce at this point (since Determination happens before an action is announced).
In the linked thread, Zen's answer from Oct 09, at 8:47 (since there was more than one) was a quotation from the rules archive that mentions "From the point when an action is announced...", however, when Michio XP's reaction is used, the action that Determination would have affected hasn't been announced yet, since Determination happens "Before you announce an action".
Does my opponent pick an action to discard from his hand that would have been legal if I didn't react with Michio XP, and discard it, even though he technically never announced it?
  ~Andrew
  A: Ah, good point.
Nothing happens, because nothing can happen. Nothing is attempted. Nothing fails. Nothing is discarded.
This will usually need a judge to confirm in a tournament situation. Zen Faulkes, "Determination + Michio XP", 17 Oct 2008
