Rules Q&A
- Q: About this: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=90808
I wasn't asking about bringing both into play separately.
I'll be more clear than I was in my first post: Can Bayushi Paneki be overlayed by Paneki's Disgrace? (I am not asking if I can bring both into play)
Thank you (again).
A: Yes.
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Glossary_E#Experienced: "The Experienced keyword may be accompanied by a number that represents the card's experience level, and a name that is an alternate title for the Personality (such as, “Experienced 3 Ginawa.”) ... The alternate title counts in all ways as a second title for the card." Zen Faulkes, "Overlaying and Uniqueness", 16 May 2011 - Q: This question is mainly about Paneki's Disgrace and Bayushi Paneki in CE.
If I have both in my provinces, can I bring Bayushi Paneki and overlay the Disgrace? I'm not sure if the title must be the same to overlay or just the Experienced version.
Relevant Text: Paneki's Disgrace Shadowlands • Undead • Samurai • Tactician • Plague • Experienced 6 Bayushi Paneki • Unique
Bayushi Paneki Scorpion Clan • Clan Champion • Samurai • Tactician • Hero • Experienced 5 • Loyal • Unique
A: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Glossary_E#Experienced: "Keep in mind that an Experienced card's alternate title also regulates his or her capacity to enter play and change control.
"Example: A player who controls a Unique version of The Golden Ronin with the keyword “Experienced Matsu Ichi” can not bring the Unique non-Experienced version of Matsu Ichi into play, or take control of another player’s Unique version of “Matsu Ichi.”"
I could just as easily rewrite the example:
"Example: A player who controls a Unique version of Paneki's Dissgrace with the keyword “Experienced 5 Bayushi Paneki” can not bring the Unique Experienced 5 version of Bayushi Paneki into play, or take control of another player’s Unique version of “Bayushi Paneki.”" Zen Faulkes, "Overlaying and Uniqueness", 16 May 2011 - Q: Bayushi Paneki...
After another player's action resolves that targeted one or more Personalities at Paneki's location: The player loses 1 Honor.
What if opponent's unit moves home from Paneki location, does Paneki's trait trigger?
A: EDIT:
Yes.
When the card was targeted, it was at Paneki's location. After the action resolves, Paneki's trait triggers by knowing that the action targeted the card and where the card was when the targeting occurred. Brook Cunningham, "Paneki XP4 vs Retreating units", 24 Nov 2008 - Q: Bayushi Paneki Scorpion Clan • Clan Champion • Samurai • Tactician • Hero • Experienced 4 • Unique • Loyal After another player's action resolves that targeted one or more Personalities at Paneki's location: The player loses 1 Honor. I'm wondering if unit moves to Paneki's location via lets say Unweavering Assault, Doeas unit's controller lose honor due to Panekis trait?
A: No, the player does not lose Honor.
When the targeting occured, the Personality was not at Paneki's location. His text looks for a card that was "targeted" (past tense); the additional condition that the card be at his location also refers back to when the targeting occurred. Brook Cunningham, "Paneki XP 4 vs moving unit", 23 Nov 2008 - Q: If one player wants to kill another player's Bayushi Paneki xp4 with Hired Killer, does Paneki's trait trigger?
Does he lose 3 Honor from Hired Killer or 4 (Hired Killer + Paneki's trait)?
A: Bayushi Paneki exp4: After another player’s action resolves that targeted one or more Personalities at Paneki’s location: The player loses 1 Honor.
After Hired Killer resolves, Paneki is in the discard pile and out of play, so his trait does not trigger. See Implications of in and out of play: Cards that are not in play or in a resolution, entering-play or focusing area have the following limitations: Abilities on them cannot be used, and triggered traits on them are not triggered. Alex Jones, "Bayushi Paneki xp4 vs Hired Killer", 30 Oct 2008 - Q: I hope this isn't a repeat, but I did search and had a friend search to and we couldn't find it.
if I play an action that targets one of my people personalities as a cost, and one of my opponent's personalities during effects. I would loose 2 honor from paneki exp4 1 for targeting my guy and 1 more for targeting his personality in a different timing portion of an action?
Example I play the strike chain targeting my monk, and his personality with a paneki at the battle field.
How much honor do I loose? I thought it was 1 but was told it had been ruled on that because I was targeting 2 different people in the same action at different phase's I loose 1 for each targeting.
[Mod edit: Thread title. -ZF]
A: First of all, please use complete card titles when asking Rules questions. I'm guessing you mean Bayushi Paneki Exp4 (not a hard guess, but I'm sure you understand that using complete titles is just a good all-around habit to be in).
Second, I do thank you for using the Search function to look for this so-called "ruling" before asking. Of course, the reason you didn't find it is because whomever told you about it is not correct.
Bayushi Paneki Exp 4 says, "After another player's action resolves that targeted one or more Personalities at Paneki's location: The player loses 1 Honor."
The trait's trigger is the action resolving, and the effect is losing 1 Honor. Actions only finish resolving once, so you're only going to lose 1 Honor per action, regardless of how many Personalities at Paneki's Location were targeted over the course of the action. That's the reason and context for it saying "one or more Personalities"; any number above zero can have been targeted, still just 1 Honor is lost. Brook Cunningham, "Bayushi Paneki (Experienced 4)", 8 Jun 2008 - Q: Im attacking a province with a 19 gold cost unit and defending me are Bayushi Paneki XP4 and a Shosuro Uyeda. If I use a Standing Fast as a Naval action and it gets reinforced, what targeting am I required to make in order to lose the least amount of honor(from Paneki's trait)? Can I just target my personality because of the up to 2 targets stated on Standing Fast?
A: Yes, you may choose to target no opposing units as you "Target up to two units opposing him.." and none is a choice. Doruk Özaydın, "Misdirection, Multiple Targets, Reinforce, Paneki XP4", 28 Feb 2008 - Q: OK, so according to this :http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=64251
In Legacy, I have Bayushi Paneki XP2 in play, and I overlay with Bayushi Paneki XP4
Bayushi Paneki trait says : While Paneki is in play, X happens. As he is still considered in play and the effect is ongoing, the trait should still work on the overlay right? So my opponent hand should be still face-up.
Am I getting the rules correctly here?
A: That's it, yes. Zen Faulkes, "Legacy overlay question", 29 Dec 2007 - Q: I thought of this issue when reading a previous question about Paneki...
Bayushi Paneki (exp4) has the trait:
After another player's action resolves that targeted one or more Personalities at Paneki's location: the player loses 1 honor.
What if Paneki was in play and in battle was killed (or for any other reason) and is now honorably dead, then my opponent targets another honorably dead personality for any reason. Does his Trait affect this as the personality is in the same location as Paneki and he was in play and is still face up?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Card_features#Traits: "While their card is out of play, continuous traits affect the card they are on, and only that card, unless the trait states otherwise." Zen Faulkes, "Bayushi Paneki (exp4) and death...", 7 Oct 2007 - Q: Bayushi Paneki (exp4) has the trait:
After another player's action resolves that targeted one or more Personalities at Paneki's location: the player loses 1 honor.
I'm not 100% sure how to interpret this; here are a few possibilities:
"one or more Personalities which are now at Paneki's location" (implying, actions that kill all their targets are immune unless death is prevented)
"one or more Personalities which, when they were targeted, were at Paneki's location"
"one or more Personalities which, when they were targeted, were at what is now Paneki's location"
In practice, what happens if the other player... (all the following assume there was appropriate targeting involved)
... kills Paneki with an action while he is in the current battle?
... kills Paneki with an action while he is somewhere else?
... kills a Personality at Paneki's location?
... moves Paneki from one location to another?
... moves another Personality from Paneki's location to another one?
... moves another Personality from another location to Paneki's?
A: The effect looks for where the Personality was when targeted. Zen Faulkes, "How to interpret Bayushi Paneki (XP4)'s trait", 6 Oct 2007 - Q: Why doesn't the Strength's 2nd effect happen regardless of the other effect?
A: You can't take an action without all required targets. This is in the FAQ. http://rules.l5r.com/FAQ
Wow, deja vu.
"A target dishonorable Personality" is a required target. As in, you have to do it. If there is not a dishonorable Personality, you can't take the action. Zen Faulkes, "Bayushi Paneki Exp 4 and Scorpion's Strength", 17 Sep 2007 - Q: I have a question involving how A Soldier's Fate interacts with effects that target and dishonor a personality you control. A Soldier's Fate Reaction: After another player's action targets a Personality in your army: Give him a Force bonus equal to his Personal Honor. If he is no longer a legal target for the action, negate its effects. If his Personal Honor is 3 or higher, he straightens after the Combat Segment ends. Let's use Bayushi Paneki as an example action that targets and dishonors. Bayushi Paneki xp4 Battle: Target a Personality; if he is a Courtier, he may be at any location. Destroy him if he is Dishonorable. Dishonor him.
Suppose I have a bowed honorable personality with 3 personal honor (we'll call him Doji Bob) at a battlefield opposing Paneki. My opponent declares the action from Paneki, targetting Bob. I react to his targetting by playing A Soldier's Fate. My personality gets a 3 force bonus due to his 3ph. The opponent's action is still legal, and thus the effects are not negated. His PH is 3 or higher, so at this time he meets the conditions to be straightening after the combat segment ends. A Soldier's Fate's effects have resolved. Paneki's action checks if he's dishonorable. Nope. Paneki then dishonors him. At this time Bob no longer meets the conditions to be straightening after the combat segment ends (0 ph). Both players then pass, and the combat segment ends.
Does Bob straighten? If he straightens, is it because of A? If he does not straighten, is it because of B? A) If A Soldier's Fate checked immediately what his PH was, then it would have produced an effect that would straighten him later. B) If A Soldier's Fate adds an effect that checks only at the end of the combat segment, then the dishonored personality does not meet the conditions of straightening.
A: It looks to me like when A Soldier's Fate resolves it checks to see whether or not Bob has 3+ Personal Honor. If it does, it puts a delayed effect of "straighten Bob," into motion with the timing, "after the Combat Segment ends."
There are wording templates that can make the check-condition delayed as well, like: "After the Combat Segment, if he has 3 or more Personal Honor, straighten him," or "After the Combat Segment, straighten him if he has 3 or more Personal Honor," but those aren't used here.
Context is important, but typically whatever clause occurs earliest modifies the later clause rather than vice-versa. So when the conditional clause ("if" statement) comes first, then it determines whether or not there is a Delayed Effect at all, and when the timing clause ("when," "before," or "after") comes first, then it determines when the conditional clause is evaluated.
