Rules Q&A
- Q: Units assign before a battle.
A: Yes. http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Battles: "The condition “during (a) battle” includes both the Combat and Resolution Segments, as well as the Final Steps before the battle ends, but not step A (Choose Battlefield)." Or anything before Step A. Zen Faulkes, "Toshi Ranbo", 20 Jun 2011 - Q: Engaging takes place during a battle and at a battlefield.
A: Yes. http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Battles#B._Combat_Segment: "things that are triggered “before engaging” do not occur in or during the battle, and things that are triggered “after engaging” do occur in and during the battle." Zen Faulkes, "Toshi Ranbo", 20 Jun 2011 - Q: The reaction on Only Actions Speak will not negate an honour gain from the effect of a political action during a battle at Toshi Ranbo.
A: It will not. Zen Faulkes, "Toshi Ranbo", 20 Jun 2011 - Q: The ongoing effect created by the reaction on Only Actions Speak that is affecting the current attack phase will not negate honour gains from the effects of political actions during a battle at Toshi Ranbo.
A: It will not. Zen Faulkes, "Toshi Ranbo", 20 Jun 2011 - Q: How does the honour reduction effect of the player seppuku reaction interact with Toshi Ranbo’s trait?
A: Reduction is not negation. Nothing is negated, so not at all. Zen Faulkes, "Toshi Ranbo", 20 Jun 2011 - Q: okay ...
Matsu McRandom assigns to attack me with a Blade of Guile attached. I defend with Doji Whoever and Kakita Whatshisface. My opponent Sneaks and Ruthless Advances Whoever. I react with Assigning Blame. What happens?
1) Blade of Guiles trait trumps Toshi Ranbos. McRandom is not dishonored but my opponent still loses 3 honor.
or
2) Toshi Ranbo trumps Blade of Guile. McRandom is dishonored and my opponent loses 3 honor.
Thanks
Relevent Text
Blade of Guile Weapon • Shamesword After this card attaches: Rehonor this Personality. This Personality has 0 Personal Honor, and can neither gain Personal Honor bonuses nor be dishonored.
Toshi Ranbo Imperial • City • Unique During battles at this province's battlefield, effects of Political actions cannot be negated. Reaction: After Cavalry Maneuvers end: Create and attach a 1F Guard Follower to each honorable, opposed Samurai or Shugenja Personality defending at this Province's battlefield.
EDIT: Any word on this yet?
A: Much like Shiba Aikune v. Toshi Ranbo, when you have one effect that says, "X can not happen" and another effect that says, "X can not be negated," X happens.
Assigning Blame played during a Battle at Toshi Ranbo's Battlefield will trump Blade of Guile. Martin Lund, "Blade of Guile vs. Toshi Ranbo", 26 Nov 2007 - Q: 1) Honor's effect is a targeting restriction and not technically a negation (although the end result is the same) therefore Toshi Ranbo cannot trump it.
A: There is nothing technical about it. You can't target the Personality under the effects of Honor to meet Mandatory Targeting. You never even get to the point where Restoring Order would produce any effects that Toshi Ranbo could impact.
Remember, taking an Action involves several sequential steps:
- Announce the Action - Mandatory Targeting - Cost Payment - Effect Resolution
Until you get to Effect Resolution, Toshi Ranbo doesn't factor into the equation. Martin Lund, "Another Toshi Ranbo Question", 26 Nov 2007 - Q: In regaurd to this http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=62237 I take it Impressive Resilience is also defeated by Toshi Ranbo?
Also when you said "typically trumps" here ""This can't be Negated," typically trumps, "Negate this effect," or "this card can not be [insert effect here]."" I take it you mean not always, so is there a current legal situation in SE that would not be trumped by toshi ranbo?
A: Yes, Toshi Ranbo trumps Impressive Resilience, normally.
You could have a series of "this can not be Negated" Negation effects - like say you play a Reinforce the Gates with Determination modifying it or something. That'd get through Toshi Ranbo, since Toshi Ranbo would be trying to Negate the effect of Reinforce the Gates, which Determination in turn Negates. Martin Lund, "Another Toshi ranbo question", 10 Oct 2007 - Q: So Shiba Aikune (exp 3)cannot be moved by political actions. Toshi Ranbo says political actions cannot be negated at its location.
So what happens if Aikune attacks Toshi Ranbo alone? Can I bow or move him with political actions or do both cards just cancel each other out?
A: "This can't be Negated," typically trumps, "Negate this effect," or "this card can not be [insert effect here]."
In the case of Aikune at Toshi Ranbo, political actions can bow or move him. Martin Lund, "Shiba Aikune(exp 3) vs Toshi Ranbo", 9 Oct 2007
