- Q: What happens if I spend full price for the inexperienced Toturi in a Toturi's Army deck? A: You waste 2 gold. Since Toturi enters play dishonored, his effective Personal Honor is 0. Rules Q&A
- Q: Hi, I would like to ask if this ruling means that the rulebook phrase "(The Personal Honor of a Personality who "enters play dishonored" is 0 for this purpose.)" is completely negated in all cases (Toturi etc.). As I understand it, there are two different cases (please correct me if I'm wrong):
A: [MARTY] This only applies to Setai Sensei, because Setai Sensei involves a choice as to whether or not the personality enters play dishonored, and until that choice is made, the personality is NOT entering play dishonored. That choice happens to have the same timing as the Honor Gain for bringing a personality into play, so you have Conflicting Simultaneous Effects. Active player chooses which order to resolve them in, and the active player will typically choose to gain the Honor before he has to choose between Dishonor and -1F. Martin Lund, "Rules for 1 October 2004", 4 Oct 2004 - Q: Can a Ninja player use Blood Money to waive Toturi the First's honor requirement if bringing him into play "without gold cost" with a Ninja Stronghold?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 12 March 2003", 13 Mar 2003 - Q: If Toturi gets the bonus, what about Kitsune? What about Lady Kitsune? What about personalities with Kitsune as a trait, such as Soshi Kiyo exp?
A: "Kitsune" is a family name, so a Personality titled just "Kitsune" is a member. "Lady Kitsune" is not, nor are cards with the "Kitsune" trait. Jeff Alexander, "post for 9 December 2002", 10 Dec 2002 - Q: I have several questions about rulings.
1) When Hantei the 39th(kyd) is sent home instead destroyed, does he keep his attached cards?
A: It depends whether he was being destroyed by something that would have killed just him (Iaijutsu Duel, Kolat Assassin, Occult Murders) or eliminated his entire unit (To Do What We Must, being in a losing army at resolution). In the first case, his attached cards survive. In the latter, they do not. Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 November 2002", 19 Nov 2002 - Q: Is Toturi himself considered to have the family name Toturi (say, for Family Tactics)?
A: Since, and only since, "Toturi" is a family name due to the existence of other cards, a card titled "Toturi" is considered part of that family. Jeff Alexander, "post for 23 September 2002", 25 Sep 2002 - Q: Jeff, Your brought up the example of Toturi as having an honor of 0. Toturi is not dishonored until he enters play. His Personal honor is 4 before he enters play. Can you explain the timing behind this so I can understand why you say he has zero honor. Also if you paid for him in full(Assuming Toturi Army player), why would he not become rehonored instead of the honor gain for his personal honor of 4? This is based on, if you payed for a character in full you gain the honor, but a dishonored character can not gain honor. But if a dishonored character gains honor he is instead rehonored. I know this is ruling, but I somehow see a conflict in the rulings. I am just confused with the timing aspects.
A: "Toturi enters play dishonored". If he's dishonored when he enters play, and you paid full price, you gain his Personal Honor, which, because he is dishonored, is 0. According to the rulebook, a Personality must be involved in "rais[ing] their controller's Family Honor" to become honorable again. By ruling, 0-point honor gains do not "raise" Family Honor and therefore do not restore dishonored Personalities to honor. Jeff Alexander, "post for 29 November 2001", 30 Nov 2001 - Q: I had asked about this to the list a few weeks ago and was told that he still worked effectively the same as before. It was explained to me that it was an extension of the Toturi ruling in which he enters play, becomes dishonored, and then you gain honor from him (which is, of course, 0).
A: There's a difference in the wording. Toturi says he "enters play dishonored." Not "enters play, then is dishonored." He's essentially dishonored in your Dynasty deck.
Bayushi Yojiro (Exp. 2), on the other hand, refers to Personalities you control. You don't control a Personality until you have paid all costs and the Personality has completely entered play. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 2-7 August 2001", 9 Aug 2001 - Q: I would also like to know if this is going to result in a reversal of that Toturi ruling from oh so long ago.
A: Not from me. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 2-7 August 2001", 9 Aug 2001 - Q: The ruling you made on July 10 on Toturi not being able to use his reaction in response to being rehonored by seppuku is a reversal from many long established rulings. I have personally asked and reasked the legality of this action many, many times. Is this a reversal due to new rules from Gold Edition?
The reason you gave in your ruling, that dead personalities may not take actions, does not take into account that samurai committing seppuku are first rehonored, and then after being rehonored then destroyed. Toturi's reaction ability is used the instant he is rehonored, before he is destroyed.
A: Here's what the Gold rulebook says about rulebook Seppuku: "Ritual suicide that absolves a person of any past misdeeds. A personality who commits seppuku always dies honorably and becomes honorable dead."
Dies honorably, and becomes honorable dead. Looking in the Spirit Wars rulebook, that version of the rules does have the personality being rehonored before he dies. In this version...it doesn't look that way. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for July 18th", 18 Jul 2001 - Q: Can Toturi non-exp's Reaction be used if that's as a result of him committing seppuku?
A: No. Dead men tell no tales. And they don't get to perform Reactions, either. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 10 July 2001", 11 Jul 2001 - Q: Also, Toturi nonexp is considered dishonored while he is the dynasty phase (which is why TA does not gain honor for bringing him out full) right? So he has a personal honor of 0 and Otomo Hoketuhime can reduce his honor requirement to - right?
A: Absolutely. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for December 18th", 18 Dec 2000
