Rulings
- You do not control Personalities who join your army. [ZF, netnews, 26 May 2001] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 129
- If given the Lion Clan trait (e.g., by Oath of Fealty), it overrides the trait saying he is not a Lion Personality, because it is the more recent effect. [JA, 11 March 2002] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 129
- Is both a Lion Clan Champion and a Toturi's Army Clan Champion. [JA, 1 October 2002] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 130
- Though Unaligned, he has a Lion Clan border in the Imperial Edition. This is not a misprint. If revealed by Unexpected Allies, he does not cause an honor loss but still enters play dishonored. [DW, l5rinfo, 12/9/96] Accumulated Rulings, February 8, 2000, p. 60
- Since he enters play dishonored, the honor gain for a Toturi's Army player for paying full price for him is 0. [FAQ 3.3] Accumulated Rulings, February 8, 2000, p. 60
- If overlayed onto an original Toturi who has been restored to honor, he keeps the original's +2/+3 bonus since that's a permanent change. [rulebook, and RD, l5rinfo, 1/16/97] Accumulated Rulings, February 8, 2000, p. 60
- Erratum: Changed: name. Text Change & Errata List, February 15, 2000, p. 20
- Erratum: Added: Toturi's Army trait. Text Change & Errata List, February 15, 2000, p. 20
- Erratum: Added: will not join Scorpion players either. Text Change & Errata List, February 15, 2000, p. 20
- Clarified: stat bonus and honor gain only happen the first time he is re-honored. Text Change & Errata List, February 15, 2000, p. 20
- Erratum: Changed: gaining of honor and stats is now a Reaction (and hence an "ability"). Text Change & Errata List, February 15, 2000, p. 20
- Accumulated Rulings Accumulated Rulings, April 22, 1998, p. 35
- Q: What happens if I spend full price for the inexperienced Toturi in a Toturi's Army deck? A: You waste 2 gold. Since Toturi enters play dishonored, his effective Personal Honor is 0. You gain no honor, and he remains dishonored with his lower Force and Chi. Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, Version 3.6.2, May 1998, p. 12
Rules Q&A
- Q: But if I reduce the cost of a personality to 0 via cost reduction (Toturi XP3 reduce the cost of a samurai to 0 for example) or I reduced the cost by 4 via a Hiruma Dojo for a samurai, the effect last until the end of the turn. In the Bayushi Hisa XP3 example , he cost 9, so 7 for a Scorpion Player, if I bow 2 Hiruma Dojo to reduce his cost to 1, 0 with in clan reduction.
A: Right. Jeff Alexander, "post for 2 April 2003", 4 Apr 2003 - Q: Can a Ninja player use Blood Money to waive Toturi the First's honor requirement if bringing him into play "without gold cost" with a Ninja Stronghold?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 12 March 2003", 13 Mar 2003 - Q: If Toturi gets the bonus, what about Kitsune? What about Lady Kitsune? What about personalities with Kitsune as a trait, such as Soshi Kiyo exp?
A: "Kitsune" is a family name, so a Personality titled just "Kitsune" is a member. "Lady Kitsune" is not, nor are cards with the "Kitsune" trait. Jeff Alexander, "post for 9 December 2002", 10 Dec 2002 - Q: I have several questions about rulings.
1) When Hantei the 39th(kyd) is sent home instead destroyed, does he keep his attached cards?
A: It depends whether he was being destroyed by something that would have killed just him (Iaijutsu Duel, Kolat Assassin, Occult Murders) or eliminated his entire unit (To Do What We Must, being in a losing army at resolution). In the first case, his attached cards survive. In the latter, they do not. Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 November 2002", 19 Nov 2002 - Q: Is Toturi himself considered to have the family name Toturi (say, for Family Tactics)?
A: Since, and only since, "Toturi" is a family name due to the existence of other cards, a card titled "Toturi" is considered part of that family. Jeff Alexander, "post for 23 September 2002", 25 Sep 2002 - Q: Spirit Wars personality Kohuri has a reaction which allows him to be discarded whenever an Imperial or Toturi card is targeted with an action, thus cancelling the action. If I for example use Toturi Tsudao's Imperial Favor Battle Action and my opponent cancels it would I be able to discard Kohuri to cancel the action? In short does interacting with the Wind Cards and their effects (Confusion at Court, etc) count as targeting?
A: Irrelevant. The Keyword Rule does not apply to Winds. Toturi Tsudao is no a Toturi card. Jeff Alexander, "post for 8 October 2001", 8 Oct 2001 - Q: when did open actions cease being viable in-battle? was it Diamond? or earlier? (I just got a batch of Imperial Edition cards, so I'm doing a read-through of the Imperial rulebook and learning the Wild West of Ancient5R haha) BTB, it is low-key wild that the narrative structure of the Imperial Edition rulebook is all about "which clan will succeed the Emperor?" but that actually never really happens in-narrative as a live canonical history until much much later (depending on how you count it, Toturi or Iweko; but I don't think I count Toturi as a Lion the way we all think of Iweko as a Dragon).
A: Samurai Edition, at the same time the Rule of Relevance was replaced by the Rule of Location.
Well, Toturi became Emperor because Lion won the Day of Thunder GenCon and he was their Thunder. So, yeah, it really did pay off.
They had a story envelope for every Faction winning, and as each was eliminated through Swiss rounds and finals, they tore it up. It came down to a Crane v. Lion final, and Lion won.
(Replying to a player: "this is very surprising to me! I don't think I had noticed any Lotus cards where I saw open cards that were meant to be played in battle (but now I will revisit that part of my collection!)") Probably more than you realize.
