Rules Q&A
- Q: Next: Tsudao vs. another battle:
Toturi Tsudao The Sword * Political Battle: Discard the Imperial Favor to send an attacking or allying Personality home from this battle, bowed. You may take this action during a battle in which you have no units.
Play A declares an attack on player B and neither call for allies. Player C, being the honorable bastich that he is, has the Favor and is using Tsudao. In the battle, he chooses to use the Favor to send one of player A's units home from the battle.
The conflict arises when one of my players declares that the person with the Favor has neither Presence nor Relevance. I have countered that the cards always take precedent over the rules, such as in this situation. So, who would be correct?
A: You again. Tsudao, by card text, does not require Presence, and sending someone home from the current battle has Relevance because it affects (and, in the case of Tusdao, also targets) something in the battle. There is no rule that you have to be an ally to play actions -- the only extra rule is that you have to be an ally, Attacker, or Defender to move your cards into the battle. Jeff Alexander, "post for 20 January 2003", 21 Jan 2003 - Q: I compleatly understand the Winds are not Wind cards but why isn't Toturi Tsudao a Toturi card now that it is a card.
A: Because the Keyword Rule does not apply to Strongholds, Sensei, or Winds. This is in the rulebook. Jeff Alexander, "post for 9 October 2001", 9 Oct 2001 - Q: After reading the card a couple of times, I have a question regarding Acquiring Favor.
Does using this card constitute using the favor to trigger actions on 4 Winds? For example, if you are using Toturi Tsudao, can you discard Acquiring Favor and bow your stronghold to send a unit home from a battle?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "replies to 8 September", 11 Sep 2001 - Q: eg: Lion attacks me (shocking!) with Matsu Nimuro whom I fend off. On my turn I bo Atoshi and lock Nimoru down. On Lion's next turn he (or she) comes after me (overreacting as usual to a minor comment at court) again and I am forced to ask Toturi Tsudao to "discourage" his unit. I no longer have the favour.
so, does Nimuro immediately straighten (eep) or do I have a grace period to get the favour back.
A: Neither. As soon as you lose the Favor, Nirmuro gets the ability to straighten normally back. In order for you to lock him down again, you have to straighten Atoshi, regain the Favor, and then use his ability again. Nimuro then becomes re-locked. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for August 14th", 14 Aug 2001 - Q: Regarding this ruling (and the similar one just posted): viewtopic.php?f=59&t=109338&p=1434799&hilit=shibata+sensei&sid=362d8d5ead7f6a4d0ecfb122f7ec38ff#p1434799
What if the favor action you are taking has Absent, like Toturi Tsudao? Would the courtier still need to be at the battlefield? If so, is there any keyword associated with an action that would allow the courtier to be at home?
Also, could you clarify whether the courtier would have to be at the batttle if I was using the reaction from Kyuden Bayushi with the rulebook favor action? What about with Toturi Tsudao?
A: Absent will not help you. While it allows you to ignore the Rule of Presence, it gives no such exception to the Rule of Location. I believe a Personality with a Favor Absent Home battle ability that does not bow him as a cost of the ability would be able to use it via Shibata Sensei.
Kyuden Bayushi's ability is a Reaction, which isn't governed by Presence and Location. It still works. Jon Palmer, "Shibata Sensei and targets", 26 Sep 2014
