Rulings
- Q: What happens if I spend full price for the inexperienced Toturi in a Toturi's Army deck? A: You waste 2 gold. Since Toturi enters play dishonored, his effective Personal Honor is 0. You gain no honor, and he remains dishonored with his lower Force and Chi. Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, Version 3.6.2, May 1998, p. 12
- Q: Can Toturi's Army play Alliance and pick Dragon Clan, and get dualClan Personalities for 4g less or 2g less plus honor? A: Yes. Vice-versa, too. Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, Version 3.6.2, May 1998, p. 13
- Q: The Toturi's Army Stonghold Card in Imperial Herald #6 has higher numbers than the original box. Are these new numbers correct by the Latest Version Rule? A: The higher numbers are a misprint. Play by the stats on the original Clan Deck box. Besides, the Stronghold Card in Time of the Void is now the latest version and uses the original numbers anyway. Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, Version 3.6.2, May 1998, p. 13
- Erratum: Q: The Toturi's Army Stronghold Card in Imperial Herald #6 has higher numbers than the original box. Are these new numbers correct by the Latest Version Rule? A: No. That Stronghold Card was accidentally misprinted. Play it with the stats on the original Clan Deck box. The Imperial Herald, Vol. 2, No. 3 (Issue 7), p. 21
- Q: Are there any other terms where the Foo Rule doesn't really count? A: Why, yes, there are. Any card state or game term, such as "bowed", "dishonored", "dead", "army", and "ally", can only be achieved by actually fitting the definition. For instance, a member of Toturi's Army is not "in an army" unless he's actually at a Province during an Attack Phase. Also, even if a Personality is a member of "Clan X", Clan X is not a valid affiliation for cards like Alliance unless it's listed as a formal Clan in the most recent rulebook. The Imperial Herald, Vol. 2, No. 3 (Issue 7), p. 21
Rules Q&A
- Q: The question at the time was dealing with a personality like Toku for Toturi's Army and if you could bring him into play without gaining honor and it was ruled that you could.
A: [MARTY] That is simply because you could always choose to reduce his Gold Cost by 2 during the Dynasty Phase purchase. He's 0G printed - 2, with a Rulebook-imposed minimum of 0, and you don't gain any honor.
- Marty Lund Deputy Rules Monkey Martin Lund, "Rules for 10 January 2005", 13 Jan 2005 - Q: To pay homage to the Toturi's Army players, who haven't gotten an Open Storyline personality to play since Akodo Ginawa in gold.
A: That's not true. There were multiple Toturi's Army Personalities in 1,000 Years of Darkness. And some are even Diamond legal. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 25 November 2003", 25 Nov 2003 - Q: Page 34 Faction alignments "in the Legend of the Five Rings trading card game: the eight Great Clans, the Bortherhood of SHinsei (see below), the Naga, the Ninja, Ratlings, the Shadowlands (see below), SPirits, and Toturi's Army cards that refer to faction alignments refer only to those in this list. The brotherhood of shinsei uses monk as its identifying trait. The mantis and yoritomos alliance traits are interchangealb. THE SHADOWLANDS FACTION DOES NOT HAVE A TRAIGHT THAT SIGNIFIES ALIGNMENT; therefore a shadowlands player (one playing Sepulchre of bone, the shdawoalnds horder, the spawning ground, or yogo junzo;'s army cannot[get gold reduction, gain honor, etc]..."
A: So what happens is this: Your Alliance resolves. You legally announce the Shadowlands faction. Now you get a discount on every Personality that has the boldfaced word that means, "I'm a member of the Shadowlands faction." But since there is no such word, you will never find any Personalities with it, and will end up paying full price for everyone who shows up, guaranteed. Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 November 2002", 19 Nov 2002 - Q: 2) All the new gold/diamond legal non-tainted personalities in the set have the Toturi's Army trait. Is the Wolf Legion coming back?
There are still no plans to create a Gold-legal Toturi's Army, Ninja, or Naga stronghold.
Jeff, you left out Monk and Spirit.
A: Because Monk and Spirit don't have numerous new Personalities in KYD. (Okay, Monk has two, which is close to Naga's three, but they don't have the Brotherhood border.) Jeff Alexander, "post for 23 October 2002", 24 Oct 2002 - Q: 2) All the new gold/diamond legal non-tainted personalities in the set have the Toturi's Army trait. Is the Wolf Legion coming back?
A: There are still no plans to create a Gold-legal Toturi's Army, Ninja, or Naga stronghold. Jeff Alexander, "post for 22 October 2002", 23 Oct 2002 - Q: The card text for the KYOD toturi says Lion Clan Champion, Toturi's Army. For Faith in my Clan reason is he also the Clan Champion for Toturi's Army?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 30 September 2002", 1 Oct 2002 - Q: We will be playing with the optional Monkey Clan = Toturi's Army rule.
A: Check the BB rulesheet. That rule isn't optional any more. It's standard outside Four Winds storyline games. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 September 2002", 6 Sep 2002 - Q: The Unaligned trait seems to be a fleeting thing in L5R -- not given as often as one would think, given to those you wouldn't expect, then taken away soon after. My friends and I looked in vain for useful ronin without clan alignments during the first arc (we'd given up by the second) -- they kept getting sucked up into Toturi's Army and YA.
Now we seem to have cut out the middle-man entirely. Why, Powers That Be, isn't the Unaligned trait on a few more Personalities in BB? Specifically, I ask because it is lacking on Garen and Katsu, prime candidates for it. If you wanted it there and this was a mistake, fine. But if there is a thematic reason, please clue us in, because it is utterly opaque.
A: We're deliberately using the "Unaligned" trait in a more intuitive manner now, typically only assigning it to Personalities who are affiliated with none of the Factions in the rulebook. That includes the Shadowlands, because, special affiliation rules notwithstanding, a Personailty with that trait is still conceptually "working for them" rather than being detached from every major group in the game. Jeff Alexander, "post for 22 August 2002", 23 Aug 2002 - Q: 2. Is Toturi's Army dead now? =(
A: It's long gone. Toturi himself is dead, and most of its surviving members were either incorporated into the Imperial Guard or Monkey Clan decades ago or resumed their leaderless ways as true ronin. Jeff Alexander, "post for 13 August 2002", 14 Aug 2002 - Q: 2. Does Kohuri allow you to cancel things targeting any Toturi's Army card or is just cards titled Toturi?
Just to spell it out for those who are dumb like me :). Kohuri can prevent an action from targeting any Toturi's army personality or not????
A: Not. The Personality needs the word "Toturi" in his or her name. (The "Toturi" trait, by itself in boldface and not as part of "Toturi's Army", would also work, but no such cards exist that don't already have the word "Toturi" in their titles.) Jeff Alexander, "post for 22 May 2002", 23 May 2002 - Q: 2. Does Kohuri allow you to cancel things targeting any Toturi's Army card or is just cards titled Toturi?
Kohuri reads... Unaligned Guard*Toturi's Army Samurai Reaction: When a player targets one of your Imperial or Toturi cards with an action, destroy Kohuri to cancel the action.
I would assume its any card that has Toturi in its title OR as a faction, but recently in a multiplayer, someone disagreed with that.
A: Faction traits are inseparable. A "Toturi's Army" Personality is not necessarily a "Toturi" card, in the same way that a "Dragon Clan" Personality is not necessarily a Dragon. Jeff Alexander, "post for 21 May 2002", 22 May 2002 - Q: Alternatively, since Toturi Miyako has made Toturi a family name, you could name Toturi for "Agasha Join the Phoenix", and get him for honour for 15 gold (13 reduced), or 13 gold when your Alliance resolves and you name Toturi's Army...
A: Correct. Jeff Alexander, "post for 11 March 2002", 12 Mar 2002 - Q: Has there been any decisions made on the Monkey Clan = Toturi's Army (for open purposes) ?
A: Yes. It will be in the next rulebook. Jeff Alexander, "post for 21 February 2002", 22 Feb 2002 - Q: I just realized something. Even though the Vigilent Halls of the Monkey Clan was a TA stronghold, since it says "Monkey Clan", wouldn't Miyako be able to count "in clan" for that stronghold?
A: No. "Monkey Clan" is not a Faction, according to the rulebook. The Vigilant Keep of the Monkey is a Toturi's Army Faction box. Jeff Alexander, "post for 7 December 2001", 8 Dec 2001 - Q: Not a single person has said that storyline tournaments should be in the Open format. Some have questioned the supposed "support" of Open by the company, and if it turns out that it's just lip-service, so be it. I don't have any problems there.
A: I think it would help everyone if we could get a concensus on what "support" means so we're all on the same page. Comments? Jeff Alexander, "post for 7 December 2001", 8 Dec 2001 - Q: Personally I think it's a lot more broken that White Shore Plains was - grrrrr.......
Alex PS OK, so the 3 focus was a little too good, but 4 gold is just silly - 3 lets the Lion use it, sort of, 5 matches up OK-ish with a House of Contracts, but 4 restricts it to Crane, Dragon and Toturi's Army. Arg!
A: Are you playing a No Moving Parts Lion deck? I can't think of any other reason for you to be saying, "This card costs more than my Stronghold makes, so I can't ever play it." Jeff Alexander, "replies to 10-14 July 2001", 19 Jul 2001 - Q: Quick question....the ability on the new Lion Stronghold that allows your Lion Shugenja to attatch other Factions's ancestors. Factions such as the Brotherhood, Yoritomo's Alliance, Toturi's Army, Yogo Junzo's Army*shudder*? Not Clans. Or is there not a distinction in this?
A: "Faction" means the *exact* same thing that "Clan" used to. A different word was chosen to eliminate the confusion implicit in explaining "Crane Clan is a Clan, and Lion Clan is a Clan, and Monk is a Clan, but Wasp Clan isn't a Clan". Jeff Alexander, "replies to 1-2 July", 5 Jul 2001 - Q: Just to make certain..factions/clans such as Toturi's Army/Mantis will be in Gold Edition, but their strongholds won't be reprinted, thus making them not a legal faction/Clan to play? As in they were decimated or enough left that they are no longer considered a full faction/Clan any longer? If that's true, then what of the Ratlings? I haven't seen their stronghold on the reprinted Gold Edition list.
A: They are two very different concepts at work here. The rulebook lists which Factions exist in the entire scope of the game, now or ever, with no regard for the storyline or for tournament formats. Jade/Gold legality is determined by whether a Stronghold has been printed with a Jade/Gold "bug" in the corner.
Note that even within a Faction, some Strongholds can be Jade/Gold-legal while others aren't. The Warrens of the Nezumi was printed with a Gold bug in Heroes of Rokugan, so it's Gold-legal despite there being no Ratling Stronghold in Gold Edition. Conversely, The Esteemed House of the Crane has never been printed with a Gold bug, so it's not Gold-legal, even though the Crane Clan *does* have Strongholds in Gold Edition. Jeff Alexander, "replies to 27 June", 5 Jul 2001 - Q: Quick question....the ability on the new Lion Stronghold that allows your Lion Shugenja to attatch other Factions's ancestors. Factions such as the Brotherhood, Yoritomo's Alliance, Toturi's Army, Yogo Junzo's Army*shudder*? Not Clans. Or is there not a distinction in this?
A: According to the new Gold rulebook, the term 'Faction' replaces 'Clan' when referring to the game-constructs. So, now there are 15 Factions in the game, but only 9 of them are 'Clans'. The Ancient Halls of the Akodo is still pretty much the same. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for July 3rd", 3 Jul 2001 - Q: What exactly specifies as a Toturi card? Is it cards only with Toturi in the name such as Toturi the first, or Toturi's Daisho? Or does it also apply to personalities with the Toturi's Army trait? (Thus a "Toturi" card)
A: Having the "Toturi's" trait is *not* the same as having the "Toturi" trait. So, with Kohuri in play, Toturi is safe, but general Toturi's Army personalities are not. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for January 6th", 6 Jan 2001 - Q: When using vigilant keep of the monkey and I oath of fealty a personality does he gain the Toturi's Army trat or rather the monkey clan trait?
A: Toturi's Army. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for December 18th", 18 Dec 2000 - Q: Can the ronin dojo be used to create a monkey clan trait or is it restricted to Toturi's Army since that is the *actual* faction?
A: Just TA. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for December 18th", 18 Dec 2000 - Q: Does the 'cannot join Toturi's Army' still apply for purposes of control
A: Yes. Joining restrictions still apply whenever you try to take control of someone else's personality. This includes Kolat Master, Face of the Nameless, Hitomi's duel, and Hantei 16's built in control switch. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for November 23rd", 23 Nov 2000 - Q: Alliance will be making an appearance in gold, will a player be still be able to name clans that have traits but no actual stronghold?
ie, In gold can a player use alliance with "lost clans" such as Yortomo's alliance, Monk, Ninja or Toturi's Army? (since there are numerous gold bugged cards with such traits)
A: The list of 'legal' Clans will not be changing with Gold, so you can still name Yoritomo's Alliance or...Ninja (!) with Alliance. TA and Naga and Monk, too. And anyone else I forgot who got removed from Gold. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for November 18th", 18 Nov 2000 - Q: Text: Unaligned Emperor Spirit Samurai Unique Hantei XVI will not join a Toturi's Army player. No player can acheive an Honor Victory while Hantei XVI is in play unless the player controls Hantei XVI. Any player may, as an Open Action, Lower his or her Honor by 20 to permanently take control of Hantei XVI. This is not considered an Honor loss.
Question: Can't the Spirit player just take back control immediately after control has been lost, thus making it impossible for anyone other than the Spirit player to win via Honor?
A: Sure...at a cost of 20 honor or so. Matter of fact, two Sepulchre of Bone or old Scorpion players could just do this forever, losing 20 honor as an Open action each turn until they got tired of it. The Crane player in the example would probably be much better off losing 5 honor to send a Korat Assassin after the Revered Emperor. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for November 18th", 18 Nov 2000 - Q: Who gets the favor?
From what I'm reading, both of them will. - JEKxp goes first to take the favor (active player resolving trait); - however, TPoOU's trait will then kick in, - leaving the TA player controlling the favor after step B http://rules.alderac.com/cr_for_20f/#start-of-game
Thanks in advance!
**** copied below their verbatim trait in the Oracle
The Palace of Otosan Uchi Text If you are the only Toturi's Army player, you begin the game with control of the Imperial Favor. Your Imperial cards in and out of play have -2 Gold Cost.
Journey's End Keep Text "Imperial" is a Clan Alignment, and it is your Clan Alignment. If no other player has an Imperial Stronghold, you begin the game with the Imperial Favor. This card does not produce Gold when paying for Personalities. You may not buy Personalities with Clan discount if Imperial is their only Clan Alignment (this trait only has effect when using the Clan Discount optional rule).
A: Only one player can start with the Imperial Favor, since there is only one. It's like the first opportunity to take a Battle action in a battle; you can't both have it. And in this case, the player who's going first (the Journey's End Keep player if there aren't any other effects going on to change that) gets to decide who starts with the Favor.
The reason is that both Strongholds' "you start with the Favor" traits try to happen at the same time, when the game begins. When there's a timing conflict of this nature, the active player (who would be the starting player in this case) decides the order in which they happen. So, whoever's trait happens last, as determined by the active (starting) player, would be the one to get it. Brook Cunningham, "The Palace of Otosan Uchi vs Journey's End Keep Exp", 28 Aug 2015 - Q: TL;DR: Is Toturi, Seven Thunder a Lion Clan personality?
First let me say I'm pretty new to the game. I was doing an oracle search for unaligned unique personalities, and I realized Toturi didn't show up. I did a search on Lion and he did. Oracle lists his Clan as Lion as well. I assumed his mon was Toturi's Army (I'd heard they were a clan in the past), but I read the Ivory rulebook and that isn't a current legal clan. I assume that would mean he is treated as unaligned, but if he is Lion, that would be mean I could play him vs dishonor. So I'm asking to see if I can play him once I've been forced to lose honor, is Toturi, Seven Thunder Lion Clan, Unaligned, or some 3rd affiliation?
A: It seems there was an oversight in the Oracle entry for this card. He is not Lion Clan.
In Ivory/Onyx Edition, there is no Toturi's Army Clan Alignment, so he would be considered Unaligned. In Siege: Clan War, and Open/Legacy/Big Deck play, that Clan does exist, and he would be aligned to it due to his Mon. Brook Cunningham, "Toturi, Seven Thunder", 13 Aug 2015 - Q: For example, as (one version of) the seppuku rule is retained in BigDeck, Samurai and Courtier (and Shugenja, but it is boldface already) are rules-relevant. So are Brash, Double Chi, Elite, Enlightened, Ninjutsu (regardless of numerical value), Overconfident, Singular, Stalwart, and Yu (regardless of the numerical value), by their own definitions. In BigDeck, the optional rule that makes Monkey Clan a synonym for Toturi's Army is in effect; does this mean that Monkey Clan is a boldface keyword?
A: We have decided that Clan Alignments (including their equivalents, Monk and Monkey) are not boldface keywords. It may sound arbitrary, but it's not, I assure you.
Also, in the case of Samurai and Courtier in your example, relevance to Optional rules won't determine a keyword's Boldfacey-ness either. Brook Cunningham, "Boldface Keywords", 7 Aug 2014 - Q: [Another open/legacy question!]
The Palace of Otosan Uchi:
You begin the game with the Imperial Favor if you are the only Toturi's Army player. Your Imperial cards cost 2 less Gold. Reaction: Once per turn, when you are attaching a Follower to one of your Personalities, reduce the Follower's cost by the Personality's Force.
There are several cards which have the keyword "Unaligned Emperor" but, have no "Imperial" keyword. Are "Emperors" considered "Imperial", or not, by a strict reading?
A: No.
See Keywords: In keywords, parts of words or phrases are not the same as the whole word or phrase. Example: Dragon Clan and Dragon are different keywords. A Ninjato doesn’t count as a Ninja. A Monkey Clan Personality is not a Monk. Alex Jones, "The Palace of Otosan Uchi and Emperors", 20 May 2009 - Q: I purchase a Famous Bazaar and refill its province with a face-up Otomo Shishi. What is Shishi's gold cost?
Otomo Shishi Unaligned Economic Advisor. Toturi's Army When you bring a Holding into play, if Shishi is face-up in one of your Provinces, Shishi costs 0 Gold until the turn ends.
Famous Bazaar Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold. After this card enters play from a province: Refill the province face-up.
A: Shishi's cost is not reduced for having purchased the Famous Bazaar.
Until such time as an erratum can bring older cards like him in line with newer ones, wherein his triggered (essentially) trait would have a more appropriate "After" timing, you should play it as it reads. That is, "When" you bring a Holding into play would precede Bazaar's "After" timing, and it would be too late for Shishi to trigger in your example. Brook Cunningham, "Otomo Shishi & Famous Bazaar", 20 Mar 2009 - Q: Will work on Personalities whose honor requirements were ignored for purposes of coming into play (e.g., Toturi's Army stronghold) but not those ignored continually (e.g., Naga strongholds). [Reversal, DW, email, 4/7/99]
How does this work With the Iron Fortress of the Daidoji? Shadowed tower of the Shosuro?
Can this card be used with show of good faith?
A: Both are continuous, so their reductions will be in force when you play I Believed in You. Zen Faulkes, "I believed in you", 5 Mar 2005 - Q: Legacy question...
If I choose Toturi's Army as a faction, and the old version of a personality is TA but the new Reprint version is of a different clan, can I use the old version of the personality?
A: They're separate cards. Soul of cards are not MRPs. You're only restricted that you can only have 3 total in deck construction. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 24 May 2026 - Q: are there no "Emerald Edition" or "Obsidian Edition" unique rulebooks? (are they just all the same as Imperial Edition?)
on that note, with the Brotherhood of Shinsei, Dark Path of Shadow, and Toturi's Army, what is the "clan alignment" for those strongholds? or do they operate essentially the same as the unaligned strongholds from later expansions (e.g. no built-in gold cost reduction, except what is specifically listed, etc.; but no "clan alignment"?)
A: Yes, there are, but there were not any significant rules changes. Just new story and a few errata. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 19 Aug 2024 - Q: Jade ed. Rules Question: Do Toturi's Army and Yoritomo's Alliance count as "Clans" for purposes of cards like, Yoritomo's Armor?
A: Yes, they do. I found a contemporary Ruling that "Mantis Clan" does not count twice because it's equivalent to YA, so by extrapolation, YA (and other such "Clans" without "Clan" in their keyword) do count.
Also, sorry, you said "cards like" Yoritomo's Armor. You weren't just specifically asking about the armor. In that case, they DEFINITELY do. The armor was questionable, but "Clan" is the only term existent in Jade. "Faction" didn't come about until later. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 6 Feb 2024 - Q: 99% sure, he's considered unaligned, as he's the only card ever to have "Toturi's Army clan mon".
Which then, i believe it was flavor
A: In 20F, he has no Clan Alignment. In Legacy, Open, Imperial and Jade - ie if Toturi's Army is a Clan Alignment - he has Toturi's Army. Alex Jones, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 21 Aug 2023
