Rules Q&A
- Q: If someone attaches "Traveling Ronin" to a personality from their hand during battle, does that count as a follower "performing" an action for the sake of Ik'krt's reaction?
A: No. Traveling Ronin do not Perform any Action when you attach them. What goes on does not fit under any of the criteria on Page 71 of the DE Rulebook. Martin Lund, "Rules for 22 May 2004", 25 May 2004 - Q: Hey, can anyone tell me why you can't attach Traveling Ronin from your discard pile.
Thanks.
A: Under normal circumstances, you can not use abilities on non-Action cards in your Fate hand. Those cards must be in play to use their abilities.
There are cards that explicitly override this rule, and they work via the Cardinal Rules. However, Traveling Ronin gives you the ability to play it from your hand. It does not confer the ability to play it from your Discard Pile. Martin Lund, "Rules for 31 March 2004", 2 Apr 2004 - Q: I try to attach Traveling Ronin to one of my guys in battle, and Kyuden Ikoma cancels it.
A: You got hosed, since Kyduen Ikoma *can't cancel Open actions.*
This makes the next question totally moot. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 16 November 2003", 16 Nov 2003 - Q: Can I legally attach [Travelling Ronin] on my turn as an Open action if I declare it so (due to card text), and thus be able to return it to my hand at the end of my turn?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 16 October 2003, Part 2", 16 Oct 2003 - Q: Can I attach a Traveling Ronin to someone on whom I played Inner Fire.
A: No. Attaching a Follower from your hand to one of your Personalities targets the Personality. [GE 49] Jeff Alexander, "post for 8 April 2003", 9 Apr 2003 - Q: Traveling Ronin and some other things I can't remember straight up.
A: Traveling Ronin, a power card? It's a card with a neat trick. Veteran Samurai, Untested Troops, and Heavy Infantry are all more desirable from where I sit. Jeff Alexander, "post for 2 December 2002", 3 Dec 2002 - Q: My question is to ascertain if there is there any functional difference between the Battle/Open action on The Eighth Legion and Traveling Ronin. I searched on Traveling Ronin and did not find any answers to my questions.
The Eighth Legion Battle/Open: Attach this card from your hand to your target Personality. Before this turn ends, if this card is in play, you may put it in your hand.
Traveling Ronin Battle/Open:If this card is in your hand: Attach it to your target Personality. At the end of this turn, if this card is in play, you may put it in your hand.
Does the Delayed effect on both of these cards return to your hand at the same trigger point, namely after you have discarded down to 8 cards? Is this just a wording clean-up and thus the inclusion of the constraints block on Traveling Ronin is just not needed?
Thanks in advance!
A: Both occur after discarding down to max hand size (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Sequence_of_play#End_Phase).
The timing of the return to your hand differs slightly (8th "Before this turn ends" vs. Ronin "At the end of this turn"). Eight Legion will always be brought back into hand first. Zen Faulkes, "The Eighth Legion vs Traveling Ronin", 25 Jan 2010 - Q: If my oponent resolves enlistment during his event phase and during his turn I attach a follower to one of my personalities (Traveling Ronin for example). Will I draw an extra card during his end phase?
What if during my oponent turn I attach Ashigaru Conscripts to one of my personalities, when will I get the extra card from the follower, on my oponent's end phase or only during my next turn that haven't even started yet?
Ashigaru Conscripts
Ashigaru • Can only attach to a Samurai. After this card enters play from your hand: You may draw an additional card during your next End Phase. Battle: Bow this card: Ranged 3 Attack. Battle: Bow this card: Give -3 strength to this battlefield's province.
Enlistment
Until the end of the game, during each player's End Phase, he may draw an additional card if he played any Followers from his hand that turn.
A: Enlistment only gives an additional draw to the player whose turn it is. Hence, the "each player's end phase, he may draw ..."
Ashigaru Conscripts gives you an additional draw during your next End Phase, whenever that comes along.
The draws granted by Ashigaru Conscripts and Enlistment are completely independent of one another. If you play Ashigaru Conscripts during your own turn while Enlistment is already in effect, you may draw an additional card for each effect. Martin Lund, "Ashigaru Conscripts and Enlistment", 9 Oct 2007 - Q: If a person attaches Traveling Ronin as an open action via the follower's trait, and an opposing player takes the battle action on Yoritomo Utemaro (xp1) to steal the follower, would the follower's previous controller be able to put it (the follower) back into his hand at the end of the turn?
A: Yes. It is a delayed effect of the Battle/Open action on the follower that was used to attach it to the original personality. Chris Fuchs, "Utemaro and Traveling Ronin", 24 Sep 2007 - Q: (I use) Yoritomo Okitsugu's ability(.) Then during battle I attach Traveling Ronin to a personality that assigned to that province. Does the Traveling Ronin get the ability to bow to produce a ranged 3 attack?
A: The unit did assign. They have the ability. Zen Faulkes, "Yoritomo Okitsugu and unit", 18 Jul 2007 - Q: Can I bring Traveling Ronin into play from my Fate deck as an Open action?
A: No. You must play Followers, Items, and Spells from your Fate Hand unless specifically exempted (such as by Karo). Traveling Ronin lets you take the Attachment Action in the Rulebook as an Open Action rather than a Limited Action. That's all. Martin Lund, "Traveling Ronin and Rekai's Harriers", 23 Mar 2005 - Q: Can I use Rekai's Harriers' battle action to reduce a force bonus from a weapon on an opposing personality to 0?
A: Yes. Martin Lund, "Traveling Ronin and Rekai's Harriers", 23 Mar 2005 - Q: Will it matter if they just brought the weapon into play, or can I do this at any time to reduce the force bonus to 0?
A: Any time you could normally take a Battle Action and Rekai's Harrier's oppose the Personality Martin Lund, "Traveling Ronin and Rekai's Harriers", 23 Mar 2005
