Rules Q&A
- Q: If I play Tribute To Your House and follow up with asecond Tribute To Your House while Naga Storm Mirumoto Mountain is in effect, though, the second province's destruction will be negated by Naga Storm and the action will be canceled *because costs were not paid*, thus making it an illegal action. If an action is canceled because it became illegal between the beginning of the targeting step and the end of the paying costs step, the action stops and the action card returns to your hand.
...but I can't find that in the Rulebook or in the Rules Archive.
A: [MARTY] "If all or part of the cost of using an action or bringing a card into play is prevented, the player trying to take the action or play the card may either use further resources to complete the payment, or allow the attempt to be canceled. If canceled, the player returns the card to where it came from and does not receive a refund on any remainign costs, Gold or otherwise, already paid." (Diamond Edition Rulebook, page 72, paragraph 3)
- Marty Lund Deputy Rules monkey Martin Lund, "Rules for 10 December 2004", 13 Dec 2004 - Q: I am at -8 honor, and my opponent is at -10. I want to send him a 14 point honor loss, but will die myself if I do so (using Kaukatsu). Am I correct in interpreting TtyH in such a way that I could play it, find myself back at 3 honor (out of the Shadowed Tower), and then make myself lose 14 honor and copy it to my opponent, without losing?
A: Actually, yes, it will effectively raise your honor to 3 by card text.
Then you'd have enough honor to get away with your Kaukatsu-bomb. Your opponent would drop to -24 and lose immediately. Assuming there are no other players left in the game, it would end with you as the winner by Military Victory well before the duration of A Tribute to Your House expired and you landed at -26 honor. Martin Lund, "Rules for 8 April 2004", 11 Apr 2004 - Q: - Tribute to Your House says that it isn't an Honor Loss. But if the higher honor in a game is -16, what's happen? That player (A ninja, for example) will be at 0 Honor until the beggining of his next turn?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 2 October 2001", 2 Oct 2001 - Q: Everyone knows the combo of Tribute to Your House and Asako Sagoten for quick >honor gains. Albeit, not a great combo, it's one that I play with in one of my >fun decks. I was thinking about this combo, and then it came to my attention, >how is this such a combo affected by the new wording on In Time of War?
Tribute to your House reads: Political Limited: Destroy your rightmost province. Until the beginning of your >next turn the player (or players) with the most family honor is considered to >have family honor equal to their starting family honor. Honor gains and losses >occur as usual during this period and affect the player's true family honor >during this time. This is not considered an honor loss.
While not considered an honor loss, per se, it would take you back to your >starting family honor. So the question is, could you technically use two or >more Sagotens after dropping a Tribute under IToW? Or is this >Psuedo-Current-Honor not change anything based upon what your starting honor >is? Or what? I'm just trying to figure out what I can and cannot do here :P
A: Tribute to your House effectively circumvents In Time of War's new wording. At the beginning of your next turn, your honor resets itself to what it really is, just in time to count as "what it was when the turn began". You can gain as much honor as you want behind the scenes, using Sagoten or any number of other measures. Jeff Alexander, "post for 2 October 2001", 2 Oct 2001 - Q: There's some discussion on whether this combo would work.
Would using Tortoise Ambassador after using Tribute make their max honour their starting honour + 5?
Would their family honour then be set to starting + 5 permanently after the named phase ends?
A: There are like, 2 other threads asking this same question already.
The way I read it, Tribute + Tortoise Ambassador can completely cripple someone's Honor Total since Tortoise Ambassador specifically says "true Family Honor."
If Jeff has something else in mind, I'd be happy to hear from him. Martin Lund, "Tortoise Ambassador and Tribute to Your House", 3 Apr 2005 - Q: Am I right in understanding that if I use "Tribute to Your House" during my action phase, setting their honour to [Family], and then use Tortoise Ambassador's reaction during their turn, and chose "action", that their maximum honour for that phase is [Family + 5], and then, when that phase ends, their true honour will be set to that "maximum" (no matter what it was before I "tributed")?
A: That seems to be what the card says by my reading. Martin Lund, "Tortoise Ambassador + Tribute to Your House", 3 Apr 2005
