Rules Q&A
- Q: I was wondering with Triumph of Courage:Battle: Target an opposed Personality. After each time this turn a Battle action resolves (including this one), give him +1F
Does this give him +2 each time an action is taken?
A: Yes. Because,
1. Each of those bonuses is a seperate, indefinite conditional effect (defined here: http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Indefinite_conditional_effects).
2. They still all come "from" (per Hisayuki's text) the original action (sources of effects defined here: http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Source_of_effects). Brook Cunningham, "Kaiu Hisayuki + Triumph of Courage", 12 Apr 2008 - Q: Also With A legion of one Heroic Battle: Give one of your target Personalities +2F for each unit in the opposing army. If he is a Hero or Deathseeker before the next time this battle a card effect moves him, negate the movement.
Does he get +3 force for each? or do you just add the +1 after calculating the total +2 for each
A: That answer was contained in the link within the post you linked to, more directly here. Brook Cunningham, "Kaiu Hisayuki + Triumph of Courage", 12 Apr 2008 - Q: So it falls to who is active player to know what effect will be first, am I correct?
A: Well, the Triumph of Courage effect might be activated at the same time, but it can't remove anything from the game until it would be discarded. Hachiwari says, "After this duel resolves, you may target your Personality in the duel if he is still in play, or any other of your Personalities if he is not. Attach this card to the target, waiving its Gold Cost."
So Hachiwari will alway have the opportunity to attach before any Focused Cards are normally discarded. Martin Lund, "Triumph of Courage and Hachiwari", 7 Mar 2008 - Q: 2 - Also, what happen when the duel does not resolve? Both cards trait look after Duel resolution, so in a duel without resolution neither the cards are removed from the game (Triumph of Courage) nor you can attach Hachiwari (the effect fail to resolve as there is no "after resolution" because there is no resolution) Am I also correct there?
A: Yes, "after this duel resolves," effects would not trigger since the duel ended without resolution. Martin Lund, "Triumph of Courage and Hachiwari", 7 Mar 2008 - Q: 3 - And last, regarding this (CR again): If a duel ends without resolution, the procedures in this step are still carried out before the duel ends.
A: I'll clean up this "before the duel ends" phrasing. Martin Lund, "Triumph of Courage and Hachiwari", 7 Mar 2008 - Q: Does the ruling here http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=65977 change the ruling here http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=60166
Just wanted to make sure I understand.
[Mod edit: Thread title. -ZF]
A: It has no impact whatsoever. The changes there have to do with Step J - ending the duel and then cleaning up Focused Cards and Focus Pools. Focus Effects have already triggered before that (Step F). Reactions and Effects triggered by winning a duel as well have already resolved as well (Step I). Martin Lund, "Ring of Fire and Triumph of Courage", 7 Mar 2008 - Q: J: Duel resolution, and the duel, now end. In order:
Discard all focused cards. End any changes to their Focus Value. Each player puts any cards remaining in his or her focus pool at the bottom of his or her Fate deck in any order.
A: Citation Martin Lund, "Triumph of Courage, Hachiwari and Duel resolution", 6 Mar 2008 - Q: I have a doubt concerning how this two cards can interact :
Relevant texts : Triumph of Courage : Focus Effect: You may switch one of your focused cards with a card in your Fate discard pile. After this duel resolves, your focused cards are removed from the game instead of discarded.
Hachiwari : Focus Effect: After this duel resolves, you may target your Personality in the duel if he is still in play, or any other of your Personalities if he is not. Attach this card to the target, waiving its Gold Cost.
rules.l5r.com, about duels : J: Discard all focused cards. End any changes to their Focus Value. Each player puts any cards remaining in his or her focus pool at the bottom of his or her Fate deck in any order. Duel resolution, and the duel, now end.
First question : If the discarded cards goes to the discard pile, then the duel resolve, how can Triumph of Courage "removal from the game" can be an "instead" effect?
Second question : If step J is right, then what happens to Hachiwari when it is focused (via Text of Courage or just focused)? Because, Hachiwari goes to the discard pile (step J of Duels step by step), then tries to attach (looks like it tries to attach from the discard pile) and at the same time is "removed from the game intead of being discarded" due to Triumph of Courage. Does it fall down to who is active player due to effect timing conflict?
Thanks
A: We are actually hashing this one out in Junta now, so I hope to get your a result soon.
Sit tight. Martin Lund, "Triumph of Courage, Hachiwari and Duel resolution", 3 Mar 2008 - Q: In reference to my last question about Triumph of Courage.
OK, I take note that "any new +1 bonuses effects [Triumph of Courage] tries to create still fail on an individual basis if Matsu Takeko is out of play when they try to resolve". Thanks for this new answer that confirms previous ones.
However please may you explain why Triumph of Courage's delayed effect "After each time this turn a Battle action resolves (including this one), give him +1F", that was activated while Takeko was in play, fails to be applied while she is dead ? I wrongly thought a delayed effect could apply to an out-of-play card if this card was in play when that effect was activated, as suggested in CR, Effect, Effects in and out of play: "[...] Effects that were activated regarding a card in play, and then delayed, also apply to the card at the delayed point in time, even if it is no longer in play". Why please isn't this rule relevant, regarding Triumph of Courage ?
Thanks again for your help.
A: "After each time this turn a Battle action resolves (including this one), give him +1F"
Is an on-going effect that looks for a trigger and creates a new effect.
Each individual +1F bonus is a distinct effect on the target card. It does not apply or exist until a trigger is met. If the card is not eligible for new effects to be applied to it (because it is out of play), that individual +1F effect fails.
The on-going "parent" effect that triggers to produce those "child" effects, however, continues until it is Negated or its duration Expires, as do any +1F bonuses that successfully resolved. Martin Lund, "Triumph of Courage 4", 13 Nov 2007 - Q: If I use Triumph of courage focus effect to switch it with another card, Will the triumph for courage also be removed from the game?
A: In more general terms, "If a card enters a Focus Poll by some means besides focusing, it is treated as 'focused'?"
http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_F#Focused_cards: "Cards currently in the focusing area. This is not necessarily restricted to cards that were originally focused."
Triumph of Courage goes. Zen Faulkes, "Triumph of Courage", 24 Aug 2007 - Q: Triumph of Courage Focus Effect: You may switch one of your focused cards with a card in your Fate discard pile. After this duel resolves, your focused cards are removed from the game instead of discarded.
Ring of Fire Focus Effect: You may give this card -2 Focus Value. If you do, and you win this duel, put this card into play.
If I focus Triumph of Courage and use its focus effect to switch Triumph with a Ring of Fire that was on my discard pile:
1) May i use Ring of fire focus effect? 2) If yes, and i win the duel may i put the ring of fire into play? Does the ring stay in play, it will be removed from the game, or it will be removed from the game then come back to play due to Ring of Fire Focus effect?
A: Yes, you can use Triumph of Courage to swap in Ring of Fire and use Ring of Fire's Focus Effect.
I've coved that here.
If you win the duel, Ring of Fire will be put into play. Step I of Dueling involves applying all consequences of Winning and Losing the Duel. Then Step J involves cleaning up all Focus cards - including cards in the Focus Pool and the Focused Cards Area. Since Ring of Fire isn't in the Focused Cards Area during Step J, it would not be Discarded normally, so it won't be removed from the game by Triumph of Courage "instead" either. Martin Lund, "Triumph of Courage and Ring of Fire", 7 Aug 2007 - Q: For example, may I use the Focus Effect of Triumph of Courage to get a Ring of Fire into my focus pool, and then use the Focus Effect on Ring of Fire to play it?
A: Yes, specifically because it says that if a new card enters the focusing area during the process of resolving Focus Effects you must resolve its Focus Effect before leaving Step F: "Focus Effects resolve".
Triumph would switch with another card - and any Focus Effect of that card would have to take place before moving to Step G where final dueling scores are computed. Martin Lund, "Chaining Focus Effects", 7 Aug 2007 - Q: In reference to this, I apologize for my poor knowledge of the rules but I don't understand why "Takeko still has the original +1F while in the Discard Pile until the end of the turn since on-going effects do not end early just because the card their effected leaves play. They only go away if the card becomes mixed up with other cards face-down - typically by being put back into a Deck or Hand" (these are the last sentences in Mr Lund's Answer).
Indeed I wrongly thought that effects couldn't apply to out-of-play cards such as dead personalities. I made a wrong interpretation of the text in the 'Implications of in and out of play' part of the 'PHYSICALLY MARKED CARD STATES' chapter : "cards that are not in play are not affected by effects" and also in the 'Effects in and out of play' part of the 'EFFECTS' chapter : "effects only apply to cards that are either in play, or in a temporary focusing, entering-play, or resolution area".
Forgive my unfortunate lack of cleverness but would it be disrespectful to ask why "Takeko still has the original +1F while in the Discard Pile until the end of the turn" in the given example, please ?
Is it specifically due to the fact that this effect is on-going or might I suppose that continuous effects would also apply to Takeko ? For instance, if I control the Valley of Heroes and I play Astonishing Resilience when my hero Takeko is destroyed, does she also get the Force bonus from the Valley as long as she remains dead ?
Thanks for your precious help.
A: The +1 Force bonus Takeko gains is an On-Going Effect. It has its own duration (until the end of the turn) and does not end prematurely due to her leaving play.
Leaving play does not remove all effects or alterations already on a card (some states, like Bowed or Unbowed, however, do not exist outside of the in-play area) - becoming face-down and mixed with other face-down cards does (as per the Tracking Rule).
When a card it out of play, one can not normally apply an effect to it. However, On-Going effects that have already been applied to it legally, however, continue on until their duration expires. Nothing says to prematurely end the effect. Nor will any Instantaneous Effects normally be undone. A Dishonorable Personality, for example, becomes Dishonorable Dead.
This is not Magic: The Gathering, where every time a card changes zones it is treated as a new copy of that card.
I can see how the "Effects in and out of play" section might mislead someone to believe that On-Going effects are Negated by a card's out-of-play status, though. I'll speak to Roger about clarifying that part of the Comprehensive Rules.
Valley of Heroes would not apply as it is a Continuous Effect. Martin Lund, "Re: Triumph of Courage in Death after Life", 23 Jul 2007 - Q: Greetings,
I'd like to get a little more explanations about how effects apply (or don't apply) to cards that are destroyed and later come back into play.
Let's imagine a battle where a Personality is affected by Triumph of Courage : he gets +1F after each time a Battle action resolves this turn, including this one ; at this time he gets +1F for Triumph of Courage. Then this courageous Personality is destroyed by a Battle action (let's say First and Final Strike). Triumph of Courage would give him +2F but he is no longer in play so the effects from Triumph of Courage no longer apply to him. The third Battle action is Let Them Fight Their Deads, targeting this dead Personality who now enters play at this battlefield.
Are the effects from Triumph of Courage still waiting for his return, therefore giving him a Force bonus, or have they ended when this Personality was destroyed ? If they give him a Force bonus, is it +3F (resolution of Triumph of Courage, First and Final Strike and Let Them Fight Their Deads) or only +2F because the Personality was not in play when First and Final Strike ended so it doesn't count towards the effects from Triumph of Courage ?
Thanks for reading.
A: The effect of Triumph of Courage lasts the whole turn. Each time a Battle Action resolves it'll try to create a new +1F bonus to give to the Personality you targeted with it. If the Personality can't legally be effected, the +1F bonus effect fails. If the Personality can be effected, he / she / it gains a +1F bonus that lasts until the end of the turn.
So in your example, let's say we target Matsu Takeko the following plays out.
Triumph of Courage is played on Matsu Takeko. Triumph of Courage finishes resolving. Takeko gains +1 Force.
First and Final Strike is played on Takeko. Takeko is killed. First and Final Strike finishes resolving. Takeko fails to gain +1 Force because she is not in play to be effected.
Let Them Fight Their Dead is played on Takeko. Somebody loses 5 Honor. Takeko enters play. Let Them Fight Their Dead finishes resolving its immediate effects. Takeko gains +1 Force.
Total Actions resolved: 3 Total Force gained by Takeko: 2
Basically, Triumph of Courage "waits around" to see if any new triggers come up from Battle Actions this turn (that's what its card text says, after all), but its individual attempts to give out +1F do not "wait around" to see if their subject reenters play. They just succeed or fail to resolve - once and only once.
Also, remember that Takeko still has the original +1F while in the Discard Pile until the end of the turn since on-going effects do not end early just because the card their effected leaves play. They only go away if the card becomes mixed up with other cards face-down - typically by being put back into a Deck or Hand. Martin Lund, "Triumph of Courage in Death after Life", 20 Jul 2007 - Q: If i focus a Triumph of Courage during a duel and switch it with a card with a focus effect (like Cool Head Prevails), does the second focus effect resolves?
A: Yes. The order of Focus Effect are chosen by the active player, but if a new card enters the focusing area during this process, its Focus Effect must resolve before proceeding to the next one. Zen Faulkes, "Triumph of Courage + focus effect", 29 May 2007
