After a battle’s Combat Segment ends, if Tsuburu is at its battlefield and there are no defending units there: Give Tsuburu +6F.” [MRP, Samurai Edition, 25 July 2007] Comprehensive Rules, Samurai Edition, with specific card rulings, final version, May 2009, p. 165
Rules Q&A
- Q: I play I Give You My Name and I decide to get a Tsuburu no Oni from my deck or a Kyoso no Oni. Would I have to pay the cost of the Oni from being into play, it means, Would I have to sacrifice _another_ personality (for Tsuburu) or destroy a holding (for Kyoso)?
A: Careful. Not all oni are worded the same. Some have non-Gold costs (Tsuburo no Oni), and some have entering play effects (Kyoso no Oni). This can lead to rather different answers to what you might think is the same question.
In this case, the answer does turn out to be the same, because the only thing the spell waives are Gold costs and restrictions. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 19 August 2003, Part 2", 20 Aug 2003 - Q: If I use I Give You My Name to summon Tsuburu no Oni, how many personalities do I have to kill? 1 or 2?
Relevant text:
I Give You My Name Maho Limited: Bow this shugenja and destroy one of your human Personalities to search for a non-Unique Oni from your deck or discard pile with a Gold cost less than or equal to the human's Gold cost plus this Shugenja's chi. Put the Oni into play, without Gold cost and ignoring play restrictions. Lose 2 Honor.
Tsuburu no Oni Unaligned Nonhuman Cavalry Shadowlands You must destroy one of your Personalities to bring Tsuburu no Oni into play. Lose 5 Honor. Tsuburu no Oni cannot attach Armor or Followers. Reaction: When the Battle Action Segment ends, if Tsuburu no Oni is attacking and no units are defending, Tsuburu no Oni gains +6F.
A: Destroying a Personality is a cost of playing Tsuburu no Oni. ("You must destroy one of your Personalities to bring Tsuburu no Oni into play.") I Give You My Name only removes the Gold cost of the Oni. You must still pay all remaining costs. You would need to destroy two Personalities total. Jeff Alexander, "post for 13 May 2003", 14 May 2003 - Q: When using the spell " I give you my name " can you target one of your bowed peeps for destruction, like with Tsuburu no Oni?
A: You can do it with Tsuburu no Oni because playing a Personality from one of your Provinces is not an action. You cannot do it with I Give You My Name. Jeff Alexander, "post for 9 May 2003", 10 May 2003 - Q: When Tsuburu no Oni enters play, I must destray a personality, can I destroy a Bowed personality?
A: Yes. This very example is listed on page 46.
Bringing the Oni into play is not an action. Neither is the destruction. It is only your own actions that you cannot target at your own bowed Personalities. Jeff Alexander, "post for 29 April 2003", 30 Apr 2003 - Q: If I use IGYMN to put a Tsuburu no Oni into play, do I have to destroy one of my Personalities?
A: Yes: non-Gold cost. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 18 April 2003", 19 Apr 2003 - Q: Another question: If I pay for Tsuburu no Oni and I dont have any other personality in play, can I bring him out? Or do I absolutely NEED someone else already built to be destroyed before he can come out?
A: It's worded as a cost in the Most Recent Printing: "You must destroy one of your Personalities to bring Tsuburu no Oni into play." You can't play the Oni if you don't destroy someone. Jeff Alexander, "post for 28 January 2002", 29 Jan 2002 - Q: If you do not have anyone to destroy, can you bring Tsuburu no Oni into play?
A: No. The destruction is worded as a cost. (Do you really think we'd let a first-turn 8 Force cavalry Personality into the Gold environment?) Jeff Alexander, "post for 15 October 2001", 16 Oct 2001 - Q: Second I have a rules question in open format can you build a deck with 3 Tsuburu no Oni and 3 Oni no Tsuburu.
A: Not a legal one, no. THEY'RE THE SAME CARD. Jeff Alexander, "replies to 10-14 July 2001", 19 Jul 2001 - Q: Then, can you target one of your own bowed personalities when bringing Tsuburu no Oni into play? I don't believe that's an action.
A: You can target one. This is even used as an example now. Jeff Alexander, "replies to 6-9 July 2001", 19 Jul 2001 - Q: can you target one of your own bowed personalities when bringing Tsuburu no Oni into play?
A: You always could, and still can. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 10 July 2001", 11 Jul 2001 - Q: (C)an I destroy Tsuburu no Oni as a cost of bringing Tsuburu no Oni into play(?)
A: The same physical card? No. Zen Faulkes, "Tsuburu no Oni and costs", 9 Jul 2007
