Rules Q&A
- Q: 1) I have a face down Dynasty card in my province and I discard it with Musume Mura. When I flip it up, it turns out to be Bayushi Sharaku. Can I use his reaction?
A: Sharaku says, "Reaction: If you are a Scorpion Clan player, discard a card from another player's Province after discarding Sharaku, or bringing Sharaku into play, from one of your Provinces."
You've got a face-up Sharaku by the time you could use his Reaction ("after discarding Sharaku). I don't think there would be any problem there. Martin Lund, "Rules for 28 November 2004", 30 Nov 2004 - Q: 2) My opponent takes a province with Bayushi Sharaku in it. Is he discarded and then the province destroyed (thus triggering his ability) or is the province destroyed and then he is discarded (and thus he was not discarded from a province)?
A: "A Dynasty card placed in the discard pile after a Province has been destroyed is not discarded "from" the Province (e.g., it is not a legal trigger for Bayushi Sharaku's Reaction). [JA, 25 February 2003]" (Accumulated Rulings, "Discard") Martin Lund, "Rules for 28 November 2004", 30 Nov 2004 - Q: If Player A has a face-down card in one of his provinces, Player B uses Shosuro Toson to discard said card. It gets discarded and turns out to be a Bayushi Sharaku. Can Player A now use Sharaku's reaction to discard a card from Player B's province? The key here is that Sharaku is face-down and nobody knows he's Sharaku until he's discarded (don't know if that latter point matters)
A: Why couldn't you use the ability? It is played - AFTER - Sharaku hits the Discard Pile (is discarded), and cards in the Discard Pile are face-up. Sharaku is face-up by the time the window to use his Reaction opens up. Martin Lund, "Rules for 24 and 25 October 2004", 27 Oct 2004 - Q: if Bayushi Sharaku is in a province that is destroyed, can he use his reaction to discard a card from any province?
A: No. There's no Province, so he's not discarded from it. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 10 November 2003", 10 Nov 2003 - Q: Is playing Kanak's Bane with Bayushi Sharaku considered discarding him from your province?
A: No. The cards are put at the bottom of that player's deck, not discarded. Jeff Alexander, "post for 8 May 2003", 9 May 2003 - Q: Came up in the tournament yesterday but is Bayushi Sharaku's ability when discarded only usable when the player using him discards him or can you activate his ability when you are forced to discard via Province destruction or Emperor's Underhand etc. On that point, does the effect still go off when discarded while face down in a province that is destroyed?
A: You can't use his Reaction upon Province destruction because he is never discarded from the Province -- he is put into the discard pile because the Province is now gone.
For all other situations, you have to be the one causing the discard. Jeff Alexander, "post for 24 February 2003", 25 Feb 2003 - Q: And a linked question, mainly because of Bayushi Sharaku. If he's destroyed in a province or discarded by someone else than me, his power DOESN'T trigger right?
A: If the Province is destroyed, you can't use his Reaction because he isn't being discarded from the Province -- he's being put into the discard pile because the place he used to be no longer exists.
You also cannot use his Reaction if you were not the one discarding him -- though if you are the cause, the discard can be for any reason. Jeff Alexander, "post for 20 January 2003", 21 Jan 2003
