Rulings
- Q: Does the Event "Tsukune Ascends" give a Force bonus to everyone in my deck or just the people I have in play? A: Only those you have in play. The word "your" has been used to mean more than one thing in the past, but starting with Gold Edition we're being very careful to use it exclusively when we mean "controlled by you", and that means things in play only. (This does not reverse any rulings on pre-Gold Edition cards where a change or bonus to "your" cards was judged to apply to those still in your deck as well, such as At'tok'tuk Sensei. Those cards were written using looser terminology than recent expansions do.) Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, May 21, 2003, p. 7
Rules Q&A
- Q: With the questions raised on Rain of Emeralds, I have one just to clarify my thinking (not sure that will ever happen....)
Event in question: Tsukune Ascends Remove your Personality with the highest Force from the game. You choose in the case of a tie. All your other Personalities permanently gain +1 Force, +1 Chi, and +1 Personal Honor. 'Arise, Tsukune, Fortune of Rebirth. Take your place among the Celestial Heavens.'
Questions: 1. Since, unlike Rain of Emeralds, Tsukune Ascends doesn't say in play, does it affect the personalities in your Deck/Discard or when they come into play later that game?
No. "Your" = "controlled by you", and only cards in play have controllers. [DA glossary, p. 77]
As you have stated above, this would appear to contradict earlier rulings on Bayushi Yojiro and Kirin's Shrine (Experienced). Bayushi Yojiro states "Each Scorpion Clan Personality you control gains..." and Kirin's Shrine states "...your human Personalities gain +1F/+1C and your Dragon...." In both cases, the rulings have been that personalities entering play gain the +1 personal honor after entering play, but before honor for bringing them in is gained.Perhaps it would be clearer to state that since, unless otherwise stated, the effect of Events only lasts until the end of the current turn, and that is why Tsukune Ascends only affects personalities currently in play.
A: But that's NOT the reason why Tsukune Ascends only affects Personalities currently in play. The reason is that it's worded to happen once, instantaneously, applying only to what meets its criteria at that time, while Yojiro and the Ki-Rin's Shrine are continuously applying. Jeff Alexander, "post for 4 June 2002", 5 Jun 2002 - Q: Hi!
I have a question regarding Tsukune Ascends... Do personalities not already in play also gain the bonusses? Like with the ki-rin shrine or Bayushi (what's his name) the scorp. champ.
A: None of these cards affect Personalities who aren't in play.
The reason you see extra honor gained due to Ki-Rin's Shrine Exp and Bayushi Yojiro Exp2 is that they raise Personal Honor a fraction of a second before honor is gained, not because they raise it while people are still in your deck. Jeff Alexander, "post for 6 March 2002", 7 Mar 2002 - Q: 3) Tsukune Ascends. I'm pretty sure that the answer is no, but does this event effect your personalities not yet in play?
No. It really does mean "your".
Your now means in play? This is probably ok but realy needs more support in the rulebook.
A: "Your" is defined as "controlled by you" in most past editions of the rulebook. (I'll see about putting it back in the glossary.) And only cards in play have controllers. The problem isn't so much the definition of "your" but its improper use on certain cards. Jeff Alexander, "post for 14 December 2001", 15 Dec 2001 - Q: 3) Tsukune Ascends. I'm pretty sure that the answer is no, but does this event effect your personalities not yet in play?
A: No. It really does mean "your". Jeff Alexander, "post for 13 December 2001", 14 Dec 2001 - Q: Event Tsukune Ascends
Remove your Personality with the highest Force from the game. You choose in the case of a tie. All of your other Personalities permanently gain +1 Force, +1 Chi, and +1 Personal Honor.
does this effect every personality in your deck and in play or just those in play?
Just those in play.
Why? Why would it not work the same as Yojiro exp2 or Ki-rin Shrine exp.? Similar wording. The card says nothing about "All of your other Personalities in play Permanently..."
A: Bingo. Yojiro (and, theoretically, the Shrine) do not affect Personalities not yet in play. I've been tightening up my scrutiny on those potential wording pitfalls ever since the Kitsu Tombs and At'Tok'Tuk Sensei in Ambition's Debt. Effects, even global ones, are normally restricted to cards in play. It takes explicit text to the contrary to make it elsewise.
The reason Yojiro yields extra honor anyway is that his bonus still manages to apply before the gain occurs, despite not applying to cards still in Provinces. Jeff Alexander, "post for 6 December 2001", 7 Dec 2001
