Rules Q&A
- Q: I bring Tsuruchi Etsui XP1 into play, targeting Daidoji Kikaze XP with Etsui's trait. Can Daidoji Kikaze XP use Determination with his battle ability to move to a battlefield if Etsui is not bowed or out of play?
A: The "cannot" on the Experienced Tsuruchi Etsui is simple negation (http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_C#Cannot), so yes. Zen Faulkes, "Tsuruchi Etsui XP and Determination", 16 Feb 2009 - Q: Relevant Text
Doji Doukohito Crane Clan • Samurai • Magistrate Battle: If any attacking enemy Personality at the current battlefield has lower Personal Honor than Doukohito: Move Doukohito there. Bow all dishonorable Personalities there. You may take an additional Battle action
Daidoji Kikaze (Experienced) Crane Clan • Daimyo • Samurai • Scout • Duelist • Harrier • Experienced • Unique • Loyal Battle: If you are the Defender: Straighten one or more of your target Personalities. Move them to the current battlefield. You may take an additional Battle action.
Tsuruchi Etsui (Experienced) Mantis Clan • Pirate • Naval • Kolat • Experienced • Unique Once per game, after Etsui enters play or overlays: You may target a Personality. Until the end of the game, he cannot assign or move to battlefields unless Etsui is bowed or out of play.
ok say etsui has targeted kikaze with his trait when he entered play. can Kikaze use his battle action if he is controled by the defending play in an attack if he has unit there, and if he deosnt have units there? and what about douikihito as well?
[Mod edit: Thread title. -ZF]
A: All of these questions are variations of, "Can I take an action if an effect that makes it legal is negated?"
To which the answer is, "Yes."
http://rules.l5r.com/Battles#Rule_of_Presence: "Even if the movement is known beforehand to fail -- for example, due to ongoing negation effects, or due to the unit having been in an attacking army during the Resolution Segment of another battle -- the action can still be taken, because of the Blind cards rule."
See also http://rules.l5r.com/FAQ#Is_an_action_l ... _happen.3F Zen Faulkes, "Tsuruchi Etsui (Experienced) and Doji Doukihito", 10 May 2008 - Q: Once per game, after Etsui enters play or overlays: You may target a Personality. Until the end of the game, he cannot assign or move to battlefields unless Etsui is bowed or out of play.
A: Whenever an effect or game mechanic would assign or move Etsui's victim into a battle, check to see if Etsui is currently out of play or bowed. If he is neither of these things, the assigning or moving is Negated. It doesn't matter if Etsui was out-of-play or bowed any earlier in the turn. Martin Lund, "Tsuruchi Etsui EXP", 15 Jan 2008 - Q: If Tsuruchi Etsui experienced is taken out of play (being destroyed, for example) and then he is returned to play (Soul Jar, Death after Life for example), does his restricting trait (target cannot assign or move) resume taking effect?
A: As it uses "unless" rather than "until," it appears so. Zen Faulkes, "Tsuruchi Etsui experienced", 29 Dec 2007 - Q: (I)f Tsuruchi Etsui experienced is both out of play and face-down (Misdirection focused in a duel for example), then he is returned to play, does his trait resume the prior effect if the target is still in play?
A: No, due to tracking rule. http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Tracking_rule Zen Faulkes, "Tsuruchi Etsui experienced", 29 Dec 2007 - Q: Would he then be able to choose an additional target for his trait?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Tsuruchi Etsui experienced", 29 Dec 2007 - Q: (W)hat happens when a trait states "while XX is in play" and that cards is overlaid?
A: Still considered in play.
For those who haven't seen yet, this is the new bit that's gone into the rule wiki: http://rules.l5r.com/Physically_marked_ ... Overlaying: "Ongoing effects generated by the underlying card continue normally, even if generated by a trait that is lost by overlaying."
As we are trying to get the rule to work as design wants / thought it worked, this may take a little tweaking to get just right. Thanks for your questions and patience as we try to improve. Zen Faulkes, "Tsuruchi Etsui exp, Tsuruchi Etsui exp2", 29 Dec 2007 - Q: The underlying card’s attachments, tokens, and game state, including ongoing effects, also apply to the new stack, but this does not transfer or attach anything, or begin or end any game state on a card. Specifically, existing bonuses and penalties to the underlying card’s stats will transfer to the overlaying card.
A: I've put the important part in italics.
I propose that effects that reference the underlying card now reference the overlaying card - even those effects that don't directly modify the card's stats. I believe that being the object of reference for an on-going effect is part of the game state.
I could be wrong. Martin Lund, "Tsuruchi Etsui exp, Tsuruchi Etsui exp2", 21 Dec 2007 - Q: Regarding this : viewtopic.php?f=59&t=64251
Etsui XP clearly states in it's game text : Until the end of the game, he cannot assign or move to battlefields unless Etsui is bowed or out of play.
The card text refers to this copy of the card, not anything else (because if it refers to any copy of Etsui, that would work with Etsui non experienced, and would make all self referenced cards acting weird)
Rules in the CR about overlays says : The underlying card is out of play, but does not leave play. (For instance, it does not benefit from effects that would give it abilities if it was in play, another player would not gain Honor for destroying it in battle resolution, and Reactions to its leaving play can not be taken.)
So the copy of Etsui that refers to itself is out of play, so the ongoing effect should no longer apply per Etsui XP game text.
Am I missing something?
A: Well spotted. Thanks for the catch.
So to sum up: Overlaying will end traits that are contingent on the overlain card being in play. Zen Faulkes, "Tsuruchi Etsui exp, Tsuruchi Etsui exp2", 21 Dec 2007 - Q: I buy Tsuruchi Etsui Experienced, and target a Personality (say, Hida Kuon) in play. I then overlay onto him Tsuruchi Etsui Experienced 2. As long as Tsuruchi Etsui Experienced 2 remains in play and unbowed, will Kuon's controller be able to assign or move him to battles?
A: It's an ongoing effect. http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Duration_of_effects: "Ongoing effects do not end if the card they came from leaves play." Tentatively, I think a logical extension from that is that ongoing effects do not end if card text is removed. The effect has resolved and the conditions for ending it have not changed. Zen Faulkes, "Tsuruchi Etsui exp, Tsuruchi Etsui exp2", 21 Dec 2007 - Q: If I bring (Tsuruchi Etsui Experienced) into play and target one of the opposing player's Clan Champion can he redirect it with Seat of Power if there is another legal target?
A: Not an action. No. Zen Faulkes, "Tsuruchi Etsui vs. Seat of Power", 13 Dec 2007 - Q: Will Etsui effects still apply even if he came back from the dead?
A: That is, "Do cards 'remember' things when they've been out of play?" Yes, unless they were also face-down. See http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Tracking_rule Zen Faulkes, "Tsuruchi Etsui Exp. and Death After Life", 22 Sep 2007 - Q: What if after he brings Etsui I send Daigotsu home, can he come back to battle by any means that does not envolve killing or bowing Etsui?
A: Too broad to say definitively, but probably not. Zen Faulkes, "Tsuruchi Etsui Exp. and Death After Life", 22 Sep 2007 - Q: If my opponent uses Tsuruchi Etsui Experienced on one of my personalities:
Tsuruchi Etsui Experienced Mantis Clan • Pirate • Naval • Kolat • Experienced • Unique Once per game, after Etsui enters play or overlays: You may target a Personality. Until the end of the game, he cannot assign or move to battlefields unless Etsui is bowed or out of play.
If Etsui becomes bowed, does this effect permanently end, or does it re-apply itself after he straightens again?
Thanks,
A: Etsui's trait lasts until the end of the game, and prevents the target from assigning or moving to battlefields while Etsui is unbowed and in play, regardless of how many times Etsui bows during the game.
Presuming that this is potentially leading towards a followup question regarding Control, note that Control has no such wording regarding "Until the end of the game", only "while your Samurai remains unbowed and in play", so Control's effects will permanently end as soon as your Samurai bows or leaves play.
