Rules Q&A
- Q: Simple question, but my rules-fu and search-fu fail me. My understanding of Gidayu Sensei, the combine rules, and Naval are as follows:
Naval rules, p. 56, Comprehensive rules:
Combine rules, p. 46, Comprehensive Rules:
Gidayu Sensei Oracle MRP:
Naval gives me the first opportunity to take a Battle Action. This Battle Action must come from a card in a Naval personality's unit (e.g., a Spearman on a Tsuruchi Gosho).
I can then interrupt this Battle Action with Gidayu Sensei's Interrupt, allowing me to combine a RA from another unit (e.g. Tsuruchi). As I understand the Combining Rules, this enables me to, as an interrupt, add the strength of Tsuruchi's RA to the Ranged Attack Action of Gosho's Spearman. The fact that Tsuruchi doesn't have Naval is irrelevant: "Naval" has no impact on the targeting of the RA, and the the Naval Engage Action does not restrict the interrupts that may be played in response to the Battle Action. Naval only restricts the initial battle action that I take (and subsequently interrupt) to an action in a Naval Personality's Unit.
Am I understanding this interaction correctly, or have I missed something glaringly obvious?
Thanks!
Max
Edited to confirm it was Gosho's Spearman with the RA
A: You are correct. Jon Palmer, "Gidayu Sensei and Naval...", 4 Jul 2014 - Q: In response to this reply.
I understand that you have changed the rules in order to stop both copies of the interrupt being announced, but please can you explain how this change actually works?
I have two copies of Tsuruchi Gosho in my provinces. During a battle I announce the recruit action as I have reserve personalities. I announce the first interrupt. How does the change stop the second interrupt being announced? Have I already chosen the first card to enter play by announcing its interrupt? Have I chosen the card before the interrupt is announced? If the latter is true is there now a choice sub-stage in the action sequence?
A: Once you announce the first Gosho's Interrupt, Good Faith will now require you to Recruit that Gosho.
Good Faith also requires that in order to announce any Gosho's Interrupt, you must be able to bring the Interrupting Gosho into play. Once the first Gosho's Recruit-ment is required (by the announcement of its Interrupt), the second Gosho's Interrupt is no longer legal to announce as you cannot Recruit multiple Personalities with the same Recruit action. Jon Palmer, "Re: Tsuruchi Gosho", 5 Jun 2014 - Q: Regarding this post: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=106955
As far as I can see, there's nothing in the rulebook preventing Unholy Strike from interrupting the recruit action, and increasing the strength of his Ranged attack. Please clarify.
A: The Recruit action isn't generating Gosho's ranged 3, his Thunder Interrupt action is.
If you take a look at page 26 of the advanced rules, you can see that the Interrupts interrupt whatever created the original attack (Ranged, Melee, Fear). In this case that's Gosho's Thunder Interrupt, and you cannot Interrupt an Interrupt. Jon Palmer, "Re: Tsuruchi Gosho + Unholy Strike", 3 Mar 2014 - Q: Having a bit of an argument that needs settling.
The situation is I used the Reserve Battle Action to bring Tsuruchi Gosho into play, paying with Secluded Outpost, and attached a Expert Archers to him. I also use Gosho's interrupt to create a Range 3.
My view of the situation is that the Gosho's interrupt creates a delayed effect that creates a whole other action (Announce, Pay costs, interrupt, resolve) so I can interrupt the Range 3 to combine the Range 3 from my follower.
The opposing view is that the Range 3 is just an interrupt, not another action. There is no window to interrupt an interrupt so it is impossible to use the combine interrupt or any interrupt(like turtle shell) against Gosho's Range 3.
Is one of us right or is there some third explanation for how Gosho's interrupt resolves?
A: The second explanation is correct. You cannot Interrupt an Interrupt (advanced rules, page 11); therefore, there is no window to Interrupt Gosho's action - preventing Turtle's Shell, Unholy Strike, and combining Ranged Attacks. Jon Palmer, "Secluded Outpost and Tsuruchi Gosho", 19 Feb 2014 - Q: Mantis player brings Tsuruchi Gosho into play vs Crab personalities and declares his Thunder Absent Interrupt
Applying my understanding of timing a) Announce b) Pay Costs b1) *Interrupts * c) Choose Targets d) Resolve Effects
this means a) Announce Reserve b) Pay Costs b1) *Interrupts * -> Ranged attack resolves here. Tsuruchi Gosho not yet in play. Interrupt action resolves completely c) Choose Targets d) Resolve Effects Reserve ->Tsuruchi Gosho now in play
The confusion in our play group is around the wording of Gosho's ranged attach
So when does his ranged attack get produced at b1 (before Gosho is in play, so crab personality is not opposed) or after d (Gosho is in play, so crab personality is opposed, gets +1f before the ranged attack)
Many thanks!
Tsuruchi Gosho Mantis Clan • Samurai • Scout • Thunder • Naval • Reserve (You may Recruit a Reserve Personality, if he would be opposed, as an Absent Battle action.) Thunder Absent Interrupt: After you Recruit Gosho at this battlefield, Ranged 3 Attack.
The Impregnable Fortress of the Crab Text Your Crab Clan personalities have +1F while opposed.
A: While your listing of the sequence is correct, your interpretation of what it "means" is slightly flawed.
Gosho's Interrupt is taken at the time you say, however it creates a delayed effect that doesn't trigger until "After Gosho enters play".
So, any potential Crab targets WILL be opposed by Gosho at the time his Ranged Attack is actually targeted and its effects are applied. Brook Cunningham, "Tsuruchi Gosho vz", 5 Feb 2014 - Q: I have two personalities at the battlefield who has 3 force and is a Duelist. My opponent brings Gosho into play.
Can I Startling Attack before the Ranged 3 happens?
A: Yes, Reacting with Startling Attack occurs immediately after Gosho enters play, before the effect of the Ranged Attack occurs. Brook Cunningham, "Tsuruchi Gosho + Startling Attack", 1 Aug 2011 - Q: If so, does the R3 still happen after the duel is concluded, even if Gosho dies?
A: Yes. Removing the source of the effect does not cause it to fail or be negated. The action was taken and began resolving; its effects will continue to do so. Brook Cunningham, "Tsuruchi Gosho + Startling Attack", 1 Aug 2011 - Q: What if my own personality dies? Does the action fail? Does just the R3 fail? Does he get to re-target the R3 if the personality he had targeted was the personality to issue the challenge, but is now dead due to losing Startling Attack? Basically the question is, "what happens if a mandatory target disappears mid-action".
A: The targeting of the Ranged Attack is NOT mandatory/required, because whether the effect happens or not is conditional upon Gosho entering play. The targeting does not even happen in this case until after the Ranged Attack effect checks to see whether he entered play to see if it occurs or fails. At that time, it is targeted, and may hit either of your two Personalities, or just the one remaining. If they're both gone for some reason, there's nothing to target, and it just fails to occur. Brook Cunningham, "Tsuruchi Gosho + Startling Attack", 1 Aug 2011 - Q: Thank you, and my apologies for the barrage of questions; one question seemed to turn into many more.
A: No problem. Brook Cunningham, "Tsuruchi Gosho + Startling Attack", 1 Aug 2011 - Q: In a game a few weeks ago me and friend ran into this little combo and were wondering whether or not Consuming the Flesh will stop Tsuruchi from entering play, or just 'negate' his ranged attack.
A: The latter. Tsuruchi Gosho is in play by the time he targets anything for his Ranged Attack, which is the trigger for Consuming the Flesh. Reactions cannot undo effects that have already happened.
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Effects#.E2.80. ... .E2.80.9DL: "Prevention of instantaneous occurrences is never retroactive. Specifically, if “all effects” of an action or trait are prevented partway through the action or trait’s resolution, instantaneous effects that have already resolved are not undone." Zen Faulkes, "Tsuruchi Gosho Vs Consuming the Flesh", 3 May 2011 - Q: Re: viewtopic.php?f=59&p=1071863#p1071863
The question was regarding opposition, rather than creating Presence.
A: You may bring Gosho into play even if unopposed, since the targeting of the Ranged Attack isn't required targeting because it's conditional on Gosho entering play: If the condition of targeting is not currently known, but only becomes known after the required targeting step, the conditional targeting must be carried out if possible, but is not required. Example: In "Move him home. If he moved, target another Personality," the targeting of another Personality is not required or carried out in the required targeting step. Alex Jones, "Tsuruchi Gosho unopposed", 26 Feb 2010 - Q: If I've reconned the current battlefield can I bring Gosho into play even if he would be unopposed?
A: No. That would violate the Rule of Presence (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Battles#Rule_of_Presence). Remember, only movement is allowed an exception ot the Rule of Presence; entering play is not allowed an exception to the Rule of Presence. Zen Faulkes, "Tsuruchi Gosho unopposed", 25 Feb 2010 - Q: Not sure if the Range 3 is a required target of his action or not.
A: It is not, because it is conditional on entering play. But that's a moot point in this case. Zen Faulkes, "Tsuruchi Gosho unopposed", 25 Feb 2010 - Q: Does "bring into play" constitute or equal movement? Specifically, does the card "Blanketed Forest" stop cards like "Will", "Tsuruchi Gosho", and other "bring into play" effects from occuring at its battle?
A: "Bring into play" does not constitute movement.
Blanketed Forest will not prevent bring into play effects such as Will, Tsuruchi Gosho, etc. Dan Jacobson, "Movement vs. "Bring into play", & Blanketed Forest", 4 Feb 2010 - Q: If I have more naval units in a battle than my opponent, can I use naval to bring Gosho into play if he is in one of my provinces, and make a ranged 3 attack?
A: No.
The Naval Reaction requires that you target your Naval Personality (who must also perform the action). You cannot target Gosho with the Naval Reaction because Goshi is not in play.
