- Erratum: Reads, "Tsuruchi Hiro 2F/3C 0HR 7G 2PH Mantis Clan Master Bowman. Samurai. Soul of Tsuruchi. All Followers attached to Hiro that can produce Ranged Attacks have +1 Ranged Attack Strength. All other Followers attached to Hiro gain "Battle: Bow for a Ranged 1 Attack." Battle: Bow Hiro for a Ranged 4 Attack." [MRP, Winds of Change, July 2003] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 130
- Erratum: Tsuruchi Hiro was accidentally reprinted with a Chi of 4. This is an error. His Chi is still only 3. [MRP] Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, April 26, 2004, p. 16
Rules Q&A
- Q: Player A takes a Ranged attack action from a personality that has exactly enough strength to kill an opposing personality. Let's say a Tsuruchi Hiro targets a 4 Force personality with his built in Ranged 4 attack.
My opponent reacts with Outer Walls to reduce the strength of the attack to 2.
Is it a legal play for me to now react to the original Ranged attack reaction with Tsuruchi technique to increase the strength of the attack to 5?
A: Sure. Tsuruchi Technique and Outer Walls both have the same timing trigger (immediately before the Ranged Attack effect resolves), so they'll get played during the same window of Reactions, passing around the table until each player passes in a row. Martin Lund, "Rules for 7 June 2004", 10 Jun 2004 - Q: Danjuro, who got turned into a shugenja. Tsuruchi Hiro.
My opponent targets Tsuruchi Hiro with Break the Line. Can I redirect Break the Line to Danjuro?
A: Yes. Martin Lund, "Rules for 24 May 2004", 27 May 2004 - Q: I have my opportunity to play a Battle or Open action in the Battle Action Segment. I want to use an attacking Tsuruchi Hiro plus No Hiding Place to kill a Seruma in the other player's fief.
A: [MARTY] No Hiding Place says:
"Reaction: Play before producing a ranged attack from exactly one of your attacking cards in the current battle to target a card in the Defender’s home with that ranged attack. The ranged attack has -1 strength."
Now, the trigger might seem to at first indicate you play this card immediately before resolving ("producing") the Ranged Attack effect of an Action. However, you'll never get that far with Tsuruchi Hiro because you'll never be able to pick Seruma as a legal target for his action and move onto this point.
This means that in order to have No Hiding Place do its thing, you need it to resolve before you choose targets.
Jeff Alexander wrote the following in "Rules for 4 March 2004 Martin Lund, "Rules for 29 March 2004", 31 Mar 2004 - Q: Basically question is this. If I have a personality, say Tsuruchi Hiro who is bowed, and I have not used the second trait on Castle of the Wasp, can I unbow him with Inner Fire and have him shoot using that trait?
A: Sure. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for August 8th, 2003", 8 Aug 2003 - Q: Shinjo Slings Event All of your Followers gain a Sling token. For the rest of the game, Followers with one or more Sling tokens may, as a Battle action, destroy a Sling token without bowing to preform a Ranged 2 Attack.
Tsuruchi Hiro All Followers attached to Hiro that can produce Ranged Attacks have +1 Ranged Attack strength. All other Followers attached to Hiro gain "Battle: Bow for a Ranged 1 Attack."
Dojo Raiden Open: Bow Dojo Raiden to increase all numerals on all Followers attached to a target Mantis Clan Personality by 1 and give those Followers the Naval Trait.
-------------------------------------------------------
Now here's the question...
Do Hiro and Dojo Raiden increase the strength of the Ranged Attacks on the Sling tokens?
A: Hiro does. Followers with Sling tokens are "Followers that can produce Ranged Attacks". ["Smart Cards" ruling]
Dojo Raiden does not. Possessing a Sling token does not add an ability or any text to the Follower for the dojo to modify. Jeff Alexander, "post for 13 March 2003", 14 Mar 2003 - Q: Does this mean that we can expect an errata of Akodo Ijiasu with the Unique trait, for the sake of balance?
A: No. Ijiasu wasn't printed with the trait originally and accidentally reprinted without it later. Jeff Alexander, "post for 16 December 2002", 17 Dec 2002 - Q: Its the cost of reprints that aren't gold legal. Gold was worth buying for me because I only had a couple of expansions at the time. More or less a newbie. It allowed me to obtain hard to find cards from sets like Time of Void or Crimson and Jade. If Diamond is like Gold with added "Soul of"s etc. as well as deleting personalities that are currently legal, it would put too much strain on my finances. That sucks for me.
A: Diamond will be a base set. Other than deck-only cards and the occasional exception such as Shahai, base sets do not contain new cards. If you've been playing Gold, and especially if you played before Gold, chances are you already own cards that are going to be in Diamond. Jeff Alexander, "post for 16 December 2002", 17 Dec 2002 - Q: The fear is just not reprints. The fear is only few hundred cards being only Diamond legal.
A: 50 in 1,000 Years of Darkness 150 in Fall of Otosan Uchi 150 in the set after that 150 in the set after that 300, at least, in Diamond itself (Gold, remember, was 550!) total: 800 to ~1,000
Don't be afraid. Jeff Alexander, "post for 16 December 2002", 17 Dec 2002 - Q: One thing about the MRP...if I don't find it in my deck, can I look in my provs to see if it's there and still play it?
A: You cannot play it from your Provinces. [card text] In formal play, if you need to verify its presence, either have a neutral person like a judge examine your Provinces or wait for all the cards to be revealed naturally, which should not take longer than your next Events Phase under normal situations. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 December 2002", 6 Dec 2002 - Q: Out of curiosity, what is so heinous about reshuffling (constant or otherwise) that deserves the ultimate penalty in game terms?
A: The ruling is that you can't use it if you know it's not in your deck. Since doing something you know you can't do is cheating, the penalty is not inappropriate. Jeff Alexander, "post for 4 December 2002", 5 Dec 2002 - Q: Speaking of MRP, the MRP of Gifts and Favor is stupid and redundant,
What exactly is the MRP?
A: Bow Gifts and Favors to produce 2 Gold. Reaction: During your End Phase, if you've brought no Gold-producing Holdings into play this turn, bow your Stronghold to retrieve this card from your deck and put it into play, bowed. If you have no Gifts and Favors in your deck or face-down Provinces, you lose the game. Shuffle your deck. Jeff Alexander, "post for 3 December 2002", 4 Dec 2002 - Q: The MRP is that if you go searching for it and it is not either in your deck or face-down in your provinces, you lose. This is to prevent people from getting all their G&F out and the constantly reshuffling their deck afterwards.
A: Untrue. It's to prevent people from unscrupulously "forgetting" they don't have any left in order to get one or two free reshuffles, which they can make as thorough or as skimpy as they like based on how much they like the order of their upcoming Dynasty cards -- or at least greatly reduce the temptation. Jeff Alexander, "post for 3 December 2002", 4 Dec 2002 - Q: Speaking of MRP, the MRP of Gifts and Favor is stupid and redundant, if somebody forgets that they discarded one earlier in the game, they can automatically lose.
A: The extra phrase was added to cut down on abuse by unscrupulous players. Given the highly unusual nature of G&F's ability, this MRP was the best way to enforce the ruling made by Dave Williams on September 19th that using the ability when you know there are none in your deck is illegal and forbidden. Jeff Alexander, "post for 2 December 2002", 3 Dec 2002 - Q: The easiest way for me to ask this question is by an example.
Since Tsuruchi Hiro gives his followers without a ranged attack "Battle: Bow for a Range 1 attack" does this count as being printed on their card?
A: It is on the card, but, contrary to the Gold Edition rulebook, it's not PRINTED on the card. This errata, and is in both the current FAQ and the upcoming Fall of Otosan Uchi rulesheet. Jeff Alexander, "post for 21 November 2002", 22 Nov 2002 - Q: So I'm trying to make a ranged attack Mantis deck (it's been a while), and a few questions arose whilst doing so.
1) While Annekusai's Feathers says "The Personality may not use that Ranged Attack ability again in this battle", does that imply that the personality could not contribute to a combined ranged attack? Ex - Tsuruchi Hiro with Elite Spearmen. He makes his Ranged 4, using the Feathers to stay unbowed. Can the Elite Spearmen then make a ranged attack with his Ranged 4 added in or not?
A: No. If he can't use his Ranged 4 Attack, he certainly can't add it into another card's attack to make a combined one. Jeff Alexander, "post for 7 November 2002", 8 Nov 2002 - Q: I have the DA card soul of Tsuruchi and his name is: Tsuruchi Hiro then I saw my friends Imperial Herald and it had his name: Tsuruchi Ichiro
I would just like to know wich is his real name?
A: His real name is Tsuruchi Hiro. Due to scheduling, material sometimes needs to be submitted to the Herald that hasn't been nailed down to 100% final form. Jeff Alexander, "post for 26 April 2002", 27 Apr 2002
