Rules Q&A
- Q: Here's a hypothetical situation between a bowed Mirumoto Gonkuro (Yay!!) and a bowed Tsuruchi Nobumoto (Boo!!). Gonkuro casts Strength From Weakness thanks to the Temple. Does Nobumoto straighten as well? I ask because I can think of 2 outcomes:
A: Nobumoto does not unbow. Gonkuro is a Monk for the entire time of Casting the Kiho. Casting goes on all the way through resolving all immediate effects of the Action, so this includes the time where you would have to unbow Nobumoto if Gonkuro was not a Monk.
"Casting" lasts until the last immediate effect concludes, and has done so since 1997 when Dave Williams ruled that Chi Bonuses for / while casting remained through the Duel generated by the Kiho "Facing Your Devils" - which remains on record in the Accumulated Rulings. Martin Lund, "Rules for 20 October 2004", 24 Oct 2004 - Q: I'm playing RED. As their first action, an opponent Ambushes me with Tsuruchi Nobumoto and does a Ranged 3 attack to kill my personality. How many cards must they discard? 1 or 2? If my opponent targets me with another limited action, does he need to discard since the Ambush interrupted the Limited phase? Finally, if he attacks me that turn, will he still have to discard for the first battle action he takes that targets me?
A: In the case of Ambush, you have to play the card during the Action Phase. That forces you to choose legal targets before resolving any effects (Diamond Edition Rulebook, Page 73). That'll trigger a discard from RED during the Action Phase. Then, during the Attack Phase created by Ambush, targeting your Personality with a Ranged Attack would again trigger a discard from RED during that phase.
Once the Attack Phase of Ambush finishes, you go back to your original Action Phase. This is not a new phase, so the once-per-phase discard of RED has already occurred for that phase. Playing further targeted Limited Actions during this Action Phase will not trigger another discard.
If your opponent declares an Attack, yes, he will have to discard for the first targeted battle action against your cards. That's a brand new Attack Phase, distinct from the one created by the earlier Ambush. Martin Lund, "Rules for 11 June 2004", 14 Jun 2004 - Q: Finally, Tsuruchi Nobumoto can bow for a ranged 3 attack (and then go home). Can he declare that he is bowing for a ranged 5 attack on the 3 force personality in Xushen's army, since it will become the legal ranged 3 attack when it takes effect?
A: Again, no. You don't get any choice in the matter. The ability does not give you any latitude to make a decision. You either play it as written or you don't play it. It isn't variable like Kuro's Fire. Martin Lund, "Rules for 22 April 2004", 25 Apr 2004 - Q: Can Tsuruchi Nobumoto use his Ranged Attack and then when he is moving out of the battle can the Right Hand of the Emperor be used to negate his movement?
A: Yes. Sending a unit home is movement. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 26 March 2004", 29 Mar 2004 - Q: Tsuruchi Nobumoto with a Tsuruchi tech, kills Ashura. Which Of the two effects comes first ?? The going back home, or the destruction by Ashura ?
A: Nobumoto's ranged attack destroys Ashura, then Ashura's effect happens, then the rest of Nobumoto's effects happen. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 8 March 2004", 9 Mar 2004 - Q: Situation: I navalize Tsuruchi Nobumoto, then ambush an Ashura. Through the use of one card or another, I muster enough of a Naval Ranged Attack to kill the Ashura.
Question: Does Nobumoto escape home or is he destroyed?
A: Ashura's effect happens when it is destroyed, which is before Nobumoto moves. Jeff Alexander, "post for 3 June 2003", 4 Jun 2003 - Q: If I have a Mukami/Tsuruchi Nobumoto with an attached Shinjo Horsebow, can I bow the Horsebow for a RA2, then Mukami to combine for a RA 5, then send him home as per his action?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 24 April 2003", 25 Apr 2003 - Q: Speaking of Ranged Attacks, if I have, say, a Spearmen (ranged 2) on a Tsuruchi Nobumoto (ranged 3), and I put a Higher Ground in play, if I combine their ranged attacks is the result a ranged 6 or ranged 7?
A: 6. Only one ranged attack is coming "from your army". Jeff Alexander, "post for 3 December 2002", 4 Dec 2002 - Q: I just want to clarify. referencing Soul of a Soul of I just wanted to clearify this specifically is in reference to where a card is the soul of a card that is the soul of another card. But not to two cards who are the soul of the same card, right? Like because since you remove "soul of Tengen" via the rules of 'soul of' they are no longer a valid soul of proxy link?
The instance where it is different (and I care) Tsuruchi Nobumoto has "soul of Mukami" he counts as Mukami for purposes of deck construction. Tsuruchi Isas counts as Mukami for purposes of deck construction. quoted for reference
So if Tsuruchi Nobumoto is equivalent to Mukami for purposes of deck construction, and Tsuruchi Isas is equivalent to Mukami for purposes of deck construction. So this is still good, right? or is it specifically that it must be the older proxies for the newer, not the newer proxies for the older (enabling proxy for the newer) so Nobumoto can not be a proxy for mukami for purposes of a proxy for Isas?
A: You may only use the "Soul of" listed on a card as the proxy for that card.
Therefore, you may use Mukami as a proxy for Tsuruchi Isas. You may not use Tsuruchi Nobumoto as a proxy for Tsuruchi Isas, as Isas is not a Soul of Tsuruchi Nobumoto. Jon Palmer, "Soul of a Soul of", 4 Jan 2012
