Rulings
- If cast on a Personality who cannot join you, you still discard all cards attached to the shugenja, but the Personality does not enter play. Unless the Province has less than its maximum number of Dynasty cards, the shugenja does not move into the Province either. [JA, 19 November 2001] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 67
Rules Q&A
- Q: I have a question about redirection and Kolat Assassin.
My opponent has a 3C personality and a 6C personality. I target the 3C personality with a Kolat Assassin, my opponent plays an action (e.g. Turn of Fate) to redirect the action to the 6C personality.
Is this
(a) Legal, because Kolat Assassin should be treated as if it read "Target a personality : If that personality has less than 5C destroy them"
(b) Illegal, because Kolat Assassin should be treated as if it read "Target a personality with less than 5C : Destroy that personality"
A: It is illegal. Neither wording provided her abides the current templating properly. You do not separate Targeting from the rest of the Action by means of ":" Under modern templating, the clearest wording for Kolat Assassin and similar cards would be: "Limited: Target a personality with less than 5 Chi. Destroy him." Martin Lund, "Rules for 21 January 2005", 24 Jan 2005 - Q: If I use Turn of Fate to bring a shadowland card into play with an honor lose, do I still lose the honor?
A: If the honor loss is an entering play effect (and I'm pretty sure they all are for Shadowlands cards), yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 26 June 2003", 27 Jun 2003 - Q: If you use Turn of Fate and bring a personality into play as limited action with the spell. Do you gain the personalities personal honor if he is allinged with your faction?
A: No. Jeff Alexander, "post for 2 June 2003", 3 Jun 2003 - Q: If you use Show of Good Faith to steal a shugenja from another player for a turn and attach Turn of Fate and use it, the shugenja goes into your provice after destroying all cards attached. (Which I assume would go to each card's owner's discard piles?)
A: Nope. When a card is destroyed, it goes into its current controller's discard pile. [GE p. 60] Jeff Alexander, "post for 13 March 2003", 14 Mar 2003 - Q: I ask concerning the use of Turn of Fate and I Give you my name to bring personalities with honor loses into play. (I'm pretty sure its an effect I'm just double checking)
In addition, are the clauses on Oni no Tsuburu and Kyoso no Oni regarding personality/holding destruction costs, effects, and/or restrictions?
A: It depends how it's written. For a card that says "You must do X to play this card", X is a cost. Tsuburu no Oni falls into this category.
On the other hand, if the card just says, "Do Y," then Y is an entering-play effect. Kyoso no Oni is one of these. Jeff Alexander, "post for 10 March 2003", 11 Mar 2003 - Q: not sure if you answered this already but i don't remember reading it. do you gain the honor for the personality you bring into play via Turn of Fate.
Turn of Fate:
Spell Limited: Bow this Shugenja to bring into play a face-up Personality in one of your Provinces with Gold cost less than this Shugenja's, meeting the Honor requirement as usual and waiving all costs. Destroy all cards attached to this Shugenja, then place this Shugenja face up in the Province.
A: You only gain honor for paying full price for a Personality during your Dynasty Phase. You would not get any for Turn of Fate. Jeff Alexander, "post for 19 November 2002", 20 Nov 2002 - Q: under diamond rules, can Keen Eye be used to cancel redirection of a duel (like Shiba Danjuro or Turn of Fate)? In other words, is the targeting already part of the challenge or does the challenge start after targeting is done?
A: Unfortunately, since Diamond doesn't have stringently defined steps to resolving an action, it would come down to the exact wording of the action creating the challenge/duel. I think most of the era were probably worded so the targeting happens during the challenge, but there may be outliers. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 14 Oct 2024
