Rules Q&A
- Q: a) Twisted Fate reads (even in Oracle) "Until your Events Phase three turns from now begins, there is an additional Action Phase each turn which occurs between the Dynasty and End Phases." There is no End Phase or Events Phase under Ivory rules, and this event does not have any information on how to resolve it (it does not have the usual clause given to most pre-Ivory events.) Do you: * play the event as "After you reveal cards in your Provinces at the start of your turn, if this Event is face-up in one of them, there is an additional Action Phase each turn after the Dynasty Phase"? * play the event as "After you reveal cards in your Provinces at the start of your turn, if this Event is face-up in one of them, until your turn three turns from now begins, there is an additional Action Phase each turn after the Dynasty Phase"? * play the event as "After you reveal cards in your Provinces at the start of your turn, if this Event is face-up in one of them, nothing happens (discard this card)"? * the event stays in your province and must be discarded by the rulebook Dynasty Discard action? * something else?
b) Similarly, Suspicions reads (even in Oracle) "Until the game ends, before each of your Events Phases ends, each player in turn order starting with you loses 1 Honor." There is no Events Phase, and this event does not have any information on how to resolve it. Do you: * play the event as "After you reveal cards in your Provinces at the start of your turn, if this Event is face-up in one of them, until the game ends, after you reveal cards in your Provinces at the start of your turn, each player in turn order starting with you loses 1 Honor"? ** if so, do the honor losses trigger this turn? * play the event as "After you reveal cards in your Provinces at the start of your turn, if this Event is face-up in one of them, nothing happens (discard this card)"? * the event stays in your province and must be discarded by the rulebook Dynasty Discard action? * something else?
c) In the L5R Legacy rules (on the Rules wiki), it is stated that "Regions normally enter play from Provinces during the Events Phase. They do not enter play just by being revealed in a Province at any other time." This is the only rule on Regions entering play I can find in any of the Legacy/BigDeck/etc format rules pages. There is no Events Phase. Do you: * attach regions as normal after the start-of-turn reveal? * attach regions whenever they flip? * the region stays in your province and must be discarded by the rulebook Dynasty Discard action? * something else?
d) Not that this will ever matter, but consider the card Peace Treaty. It reads "Limited: If there are more than two players, choose a player. He may choose to sign a a Peace Treaty with you. If he chose this, then until your next Events Phase begins, neither of you may declare an attack against, or ally against, the other. If he did not choose this, you gain 3 Honor and he loses 3 Honor." There is no Events Phase. Do you: * not get to attack _ever_ if this is chosen? * wait until start of turn? * something else?
(There may be some errors in the Oracle here. If they are changed as a result of this thread, please post something here so that I know.)
A: Not all cards in the Oracle have yet been converted to Ivory Edition templating. Until such time as they have, please use the ones that have, as well as the contemporary use of such cards, to extrapolate their proper use. If you and your opponent cannot agree upon what that is, the Tournament Judge has final say.
As for the Region Rules, I'll fix the discrepancy there post haste. Brook Cunningham, "Handling cards that refer to nonexistent phases", 3 Nov 2014 - Q: This came up in a game and I think my interpretation at the time was wrong, so I wanted to find out. Here's the situation:
I have Bayushi Misaki in play and Twisted Fate is in effect. My opponent assigns a couple personalities to attack me, we have a battle, etc., and then he goes to Dynasty. After his Dynasty phase, the additional action phase from Twisted Fate occurs and I use Misaki's Open action on one of the personalities that attacked me. My interpretation was that this personality would be dishonored and lose honor, because although they were assigned to attack, that occurred before Misaki's action and wouldn't prevent the effects of that action. Having thought it over since then, I think that's mistaken and that her action only cares if the personality was assigned to attack during the turn, regardless of if that attack took place before or after she used her action.
Which interpretation is correct?
Relevant text: Open: If it is another player's turn, target one of his Personalities: Before this phase ends, straighten him. Before this turn ends, if the Personality was not assigned to attack this turn, dishonor him and his controller loses Honor equal to his base Personal Honor.
Thanks!
A: Your second interpretation is correct. Brook Cunningham, "Bayushi Misaki and Twisted Fate", 13 Sep 2012 - Q: I know that if I use Den of Iniquity during my action phase, I cannot declare an attack during my attack phase. However, if I declare an attack during my attack phase, does that mean I may not use Den's ability during the action phase granted by Twisted Fate?
I guess I'm asking if Den's restrictions lasts from when I announce the action until the end of my turn or if it is applied retroactively.
Den of Iniquity
Political Limited: Bow this card and target another player's dishonorable Personality: His controller loses Honor equal to his base Personal Honor, or 3, whichever is lower. You may not declare an attack this turn.
Twisted Fate
Until your Events Phase three turns from now begins, there is an additional Action Phase each turn which occurs between the Dynasty and End Phases.
A: The Den's restriction only applies from the moment it is used. It does not check to see if you've declared an attack previously. Jon Palmer, "Twisted Fate and Den of Iniquity", 1 Jul 2012 - Q: I am still unclear as to how these two rulings combine
according to macbeth http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=93379&p=1235103&hilit=twisted+fate#p1235103
Just as an effect giving you an additional Battle won't automatically give your opponent an additional action based upon the logic that you sequentially take turns taking Battle actions, the effect of Twisted Fate creating additional Action Phase doesn't give anyone the opportunity to declare additional Attack Phases.Rules question? according to Zen http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=94813
from comp rules : After the Action Phase the active player may create an Attack Phase if he or she wishes. This attack is optional. "
Now Macbeth has said that this second action phase does not trigger the after the action phase clause so I would like to know why it doesn't or what prevents a player from using it.
According to the comp rules the action phase would need to be worded as this action phase to prevent the desired second attack.
Thank you for your answer,
A: The rules wiki has been cleaned up to remove the text, "After the Action phase." That text was not meant to imply either a trigger or a timing point. Zen Faulkes, "Attack Phase Declaration", 9 Nov 2011 - Q: In the answer to the question regarding Twisted Fate and the additional action
How does one start an Attack Phase?
I'm now confused as to whether it is:
a trait triggered by the conclusion of the Action Phase?
or
The option to attack is a part of the attack phase and it comes after the initial action phase with the active player having the option to decline to proceed?
Thank you for taking the time to clarify this for me
A: If the question is, "Is the attack phase optional, or does it always happen?", it's always optional.
It's not a "trait," as traits are somethings cards have, not the steps of the turn.
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Sequence_of_pla ... ptional.29: "After the Action Phase the active player may create an Attack Phase if he or she wishes. This attack is optional. " Zen Faulkes, "Attack Phase Declaration", 8 Nov 2011 - Q: So since you will gain an additional action phase will you be able to declare another attack?
A: No. The part of the Rules you quote simply describes the normal sequence of play.
Just as an effect giving you an additional Battle won't automatically give your opponent an additional action based upon the logic that you sequentially take turns taking Battle actions, the effect of Twisted Fate creating additional Action Phase doesn't give anyone the opportunity to declare additional Attack Phases.
