Rules Q&A
- Q: Ok, I try again for 3º time to know how to play with umasu in duels. Please, whe have a kotei soon and I want to know how to play in it.
-------------------------------------------------
From the Rulebook:
To have your personality focus, place a card from your hand, called a focus card, face-down.
This card immediately grants you personality a secret chi bonus equal to its focus value until the duel ends.
From Umasu Sensei:
Personalities you control may not receive Force bonuses from cards or Strongholds while they have no Followers attached. You may assign Personalities even if they are bowed. Battle: Bow a Follower you control: Once per Personality per battle, straighten its Personality if his Force is less than or equal to twice the Follower's.

Zen's said:
No. Rules Archive, General rules, Duels. Umasu Sensei doesn't say "card effects," it says "from cards," and the Rules Archive entry is broadly worded.

If I receive a Force duel, my sensei is Umasu and I don't have any
follower in the personality receives the duel. If I focus, do I count
the focus value for the duel resolution or not?.
You count it. The bonus from ordinary focusing is not an effect of
the focused card. The size of the bonus is determined by the card,
but the bonus itself comes from a game rule.

A: If you want any official ruling other than the one Zen gave you, you need to Email Jeff Alexander and ask him to come in here and post his ruling himself. Martin Lund, "Umasu Focus in Duels III", 24 Mar 2005 - Q: Umasu Sensei:
Personalities you control may not receive Force bonuses from cards or Strongholds while they have no Followers attached.
Does the restriction on force bonuses apply on bonuses gained from focusing in a duel of force, as well? (i.e. in a duel of force, focusing provides a bonus to force, but is it "from a card or stronghold") Thanks.
A: Behold the power of "Search"!
I clicked search (above). Typed in "umasu AND sensei" as keywords, picked "L5R CG Rules" as the forum, and... Ta-da! I'm led here where it has the answer. Zen Faulkes, "Umasu Sensei, and force duels.", 14 Mar 2005 - Q: Let's say that, with Umasu Sensei, I have a 3 force peep with no followers. I give him a Hero's Banner. Later on, I give him a follower. Would he be 4 force or 3?
Also, let's say I put Hero's Banner on a 3 force peep who has a follower. Then, later on he loses his follower. Is he 4 force or 3?
A: If the suppression ends or begins, recalculate if the force bonus is fram attached cards, because those are checked continuously. Zen Faulkes, "Umasu Items and Focus, and Political Outcast in Shadowlands", 20 Feb 2005 - Q: I lose my gold in kolat does nothing or i choose another target because suitengu's says "Before target"?
A: The unit was targeted; see Rules Archive entry for Suitengu's Surge. Zen Faulkes, "Suitengu's Surge and Umasu Sensei", 7 Feb 2005
