Rules Q&A
- Q: Unexpected Strike: End all ongoing effects of one Event that has already resolved.
Goemon's Ascension: This card remains in play in your home. [...]
A: [MARTY] Unexpected Strike has no effect whatsoever on Goemon's Ascension. Goemon's Ascension produces no on-going effects from its resolution.
- Marty Lund Deputy Rules Monkey Martin Lund, "Rules for 14 September 2004", 17 Sep 2004 - Q: Do the new events like Goemon's Ascension that remain in play until used count as an 'ongoing effect' of an event that has been resolved for the purposes of Unexpected Strike?
A: Being put into play isn't an on-going effect. It is a one-shot sort of thing. Events that remain in play merely avert the "immediately discarded" rule that normally sweeps events into your Discard Pile. Once you're past that specific instance, the Event remains in play until an effect says to remove it from play in some manner. Unexpected Strike will not discard Goemon's Ascension.
Of course, if they have any sort of on-going effect (not to be confused with effects of a Trait that is continuously applied while the event is in play) produced when they resolved initially, those will be ended. Martin Lund, "Rules for 30 August 2004", 3 Sep 2004 - Q: Can A New Order be ended by Shrine of the Sun or Unexpected Strike? If yes, what is the amount of honor necessary for a victory afterwards?
A: The increase is an effect of A New Order. It is on-going. Shrine of the Sun and Unexpected Strike end on-going effects of the Event, so it will remove A New Order's 10 point increase from the equation.
The honor required to win the game will be 40 +/- any modifications by effects that are still on-going in the game. Removing A New Order won't erase the increases from Far From the Empire, for example. You'd need another Shrine of the Sun for that. Martin Lund, "Rules for 20 May 2004", 24 May 2004 - Q: Unexpected Strike:
May I choose to end all ongoing effects of an event that doesn't have any?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 8 March 2004", 9 Mar 2004 - Q: Unexpected Strike and Ongoing effects: What about Imperial Ambassdorship, Birth of the Sword, New Years Celebration or any other event which allows to draw cards?
A: They aren't ongoing effects. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 18 December 2003, Part 2", 19 Dec 2003 - Q: Again, assuming the bonus is copied: The next turn, Unexpected Strike resolves and ends New Emerald Champion. Does the Egg's Force and Chi go down, or are they unaffected?
A: Down, because the Egg is acting as an exact duplicate. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 16 December 2003, Part 3", 17 Dec 2003 - Q: My opponent has already revealed/resolved For the Empire--I've sent him home 2x on previous turns with the Favor (which had raised the honor win requirement-hwr-to 46). Now, my Unexpected Strike reveals/resolves...future uses of the Favor won't increase the hwr any further, but Is the hwr still 46? Or does it 'reset' to 40?
A: Back to 40. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 29 September 2003", 30 Sep 2003 - Q: 1. Can I use Shrine of the Sun (or Unexpected Strike or some other event-ender) to end the effects of a New Emerald Champion?
A: Yes. Vaughn Derderian, "Post for July 15th, 2003", 15 Jul 2003 - Q: Do the events that stay in play (e.g. Commanding Favor) count as on going effects of an event for the purposes of Unexpected Strike?
A: Search please!

Here. Zen Faulkes, "Ongoing effects of events", 23 Mar 2005 - Q: If the event has both (an) ongoing effect and an effect that is not considered an ongoing effect (for example, Shattered Focus), does Unexpected Strike just end the ongoing effect, and leave the rest of the event in play?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Unexpected Strike", 7 Mar 2005 - Q: If the event has both (an) ongoing effect and an effect that is not considered an ongoing effect (for example, Shattered Focus), does Unexpected Strike just end the ongoing effect, and leave the rest of the event in play?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Unexpected Strike", 4 Mar 2005 - Q: Hello, I would like to know if when a shrine of the sun ends the effects of the event Far From the Empire the permanent change created by Far From the Empire of the honor requirement for victory is brought back to 40 or if its still on the new number? And if its the same things as ending the effects with Unexpected Strike.
Thank you very much.
A: 40. See Archive, General rules, Effects for a list of things that are not "ongoing efects." Zen Faulkes, "Far from the Empire / Shrine of the Sun", 3 Mar 2005
