Rules Q&A
- Q: Sort of related to: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=96689
Lets say I cause a 3 point honor loss to my opponent. She plays Rhetoric on the honor loss. Can I then react with Unimpeachable Name to reduce the honor loss to me?
I had originally thought the answer to this question was no, because of the timing sequence, but the above thread opened up the possibility (in my mind at least) that it MIGHT work.
[EDIT]: Same question, but substitute Shiro Chugo's honor loss reduction reaction for Unimpeachable Name?
A: Rhetoric does not create a new gain or loss. However, it does close the trigger of when Player A is gaining (or losing) honor, and sets up a new trigger of when Player B is gaining (or losing) honor, which can then be reacted to as normal. The honor gain or loss is still from the same source, there is simply a different player gaining or losing it.
1. No. Rhetoric modifies the gain/loss, it is not the source.
2. Yes.
3. No. See #1.
4. No. The original player will not have gained or lost honor if the recipient was changed via Rhetoric.
Regarding the second post, no, you may not Unimpeachable Name if your action was the original cause of the honor loss. Rhetoric is not causing the loss in this case, the original action is still the source. Jon Palmer, "Rhetoric", 14 Mar 2012 - Q: I guess this is more a question about timing than anything else:
I target my opponent's shugenja with Test of Sincerity. He chooses to dishonor her and lose 2 honor. He then plays Unimpeachable Name to negate the honor loss and rehonor the shugenja.
Is that a legal play or is there a timing issue?
A: No, not legal, sorry.
The timing issue is that Unimpeachable name is triggered and resolves "Before the resolution of another player's action".
So, the sequence is:
1. Test of Sincerity targets a Shugenja. 2. Before its effects resolve, NOW is when Unimpeachable Name is played. UN's effects will negate ToS's Honor loss, but now is the time when the choice comes to rehonor a dishonorable Personality, and the Shugenja has not been dishonored yet. 3. ToS resolves. If seppuku isn't chosen, the indefinite conditional effect from UN will reduce the loss, but the Shugenja will now be dishonored. Brook Cunningham, "Test of Sincerity vs Unimpeachable Name", 11 Jan 2011 - Q: Regarding this
Unimpeachable Name Political Reaction: Before the resolution of another player's action: Reduce each Honor loss from its effects by 3. You may target and rehonor a dishonorable Personality. Battle: Bow your performing Shugenja: Bow a target enemy card. Gain 2 Honor.
(emphasis mine)
Unimpeachable name played in response to Ambush wouldn't reduce any of Jutsushi's losses, since they are not "from" Ambush but "from" Jutsushi (the card where the loss is physically written in, and none of the exceptions apply -not a RA, not a Chi penalty, not a copied card-). It will, however, reduce by 3 the honor loss in Ambush (5 honor hit to the player who announces the Ambush reduced to 2)
Edit: Oops, card title fixed
A: I agree completely, Mamoru, but that IS what I said in my sequence above. Brook Cunningham, "2x bayushi jutsushi ambush and unimpeachable name", 9 Sep 2010
