Rules Q&A
- Q: I was informed recently that a ruling had been made a while back in regards to the Gold wording on Unscalable Walls and how that wording made it unworkable with Kaui sensei.
Ii had been told that the re-wording of Unscalable Walls was unintentional and was to be played as though it did work under Kaui sensei however, try as I might I havn't been able to find mention of that in the rulings.
I just want confirmation if such a thing exists.
A: Unscalable Walls works with Kaiu Sensei. There is no "it doesn't work but pretend it does" ruling. Jeff Alexander, "post for 2 October 2001", 2 Oct 2001 - Q: I'm under the impression that you reply means, in effect, "this is unexpected, but it's a correct interpretation of the card's wording, so that's how it works". (I would have thought that the original poster was reading more in a wording change than was really there, and that Unscalable Walls would still work as before)
Can you clarify this?
A: Initially I agreed to the original poster, but I think that is reading too much into it. The trait is, after all, active "as if the Fortification was at the battle's Province."
Unscalable Walls works exactly like it did before. Jeff Alexander, "replies to July 3-5", 17 Jul 2001 - Q: My personal favorite is Unscalable Walls. Whoever worded this one is a genius. "This Province gains +4 Strength while Unscalable Walls are attached." This nixes Kaiu Sensei partially. 2 provinces each with 1 Unscalable Walls will get +8 each (+4 from each trait), but the others without Unscalable Walls attached get squat. Very creative fix to a big Kaiu Sensei rant! Kudos are much deserved to whoever thought that one up!
A: I assure you this was utterly unintended. The "while Unscalable Walls are attached" bit is a clarification that it's not a one-time, one-turn bonus that's only enjoyed on the turn the Walls are brought into play. Jessica and I tried to be thorough in Gold when it came to spelling out non-default durations so we wouldn't have to rely so much on common sense. Kaiu Sensei was not felt to be overpoweringly strong, and even if it were, there are plenty of other non-unique Fortifications just as powerful as Unscalable Walls when used in combination with it. It would make no sense to change just the Walls. Jeff Alexander, "replies to 28-30 June", 5 Jul 2001
