Rules Q&A
- Q: Can followers with the scout trait bow to pay the cost of recon strategies?
For example, can Untested Scouts pay the cost of Advance Position.
Advance Position Cost:

2 Scout Will only attach to a Samurai or Scout. This card has +1F while opposed. Recon Limited: Target a province. After engaging in a battle at the province's battlefield, you may take an additional Battle action to play a Terrain from your hand.
Mod edit: Thread title. Pretty sure there is no such word as "Sout," at least not in L5R. -ZF]
A: That depends on the ability. Some abilities require a Scout Personality, such as Scour the Earth (from Enemy of My Enemy); most, including all those released with a Celestial Edition bug (so far), only require a Scout, which can be a Personality or Follower - it's unlikely that a Spell, Item, Region, etc with the Scout keyword would be printed.
Alex
Edit: As has been pointed out, there's Lion Scout from A Perfect Cut and Yoshi no Shiryo from Broken Blades, a Holding and an Ancestor which could be chosen whenever a "Scout" is required and not a "Scout Personality". Alex Jones, "Followers with the Scout trait and Recon strategies", 8 Jul 2009 - Q: Can Doji Sakurako cancel the effects of:
1. Attacker's Terrains placed by Untested Scouts
2. Attacker's Terrains placed by Removing the Advantage
Would her ability apply in the same situation if she is in the Attacking army and the Defender used those cards?
Doji Sakurako - Political Reaction: After a player announces a Battle action before the Defender's first normal opportunity to act or pass, if Sakurako is at the current battlefield, discard the Imperial Favor: Negate the action's effects.
Untested Scouts - Recon Limited: Target a Province. Until the turn ends, after engaging in a battle at the province's battlefield, you may take one additional Battle action to play a Terrain from your hand.
Removing the Advantage - Reaction: After engaging in a battle, if you control a unit at the current battlefield: Play a Terrain card as an additional Battle action.
A: Untested Scouts and Removing the Advantage both grant additional Battle actions with timing points sometime between "Armies Engage" and the "Defender's first normal opportunity". Doji Sakurako's Reaction can thus be performed in response to them; she doesn't care whether the action is performed by the attacker or the defender.
The Defender will usually have trouble playing a terrain from Untested Scouts, however, since its ability is Limited. Alex Jones, "Doji Sakurako and "After Engaging" additional battle actions", 17 Jun 2008 - Q: D. Apply any delayed effects that resolved previously and are timed to the trigger (such as, “After the next time this turn he assigns…”) The active player decides the order in which more than one of these effects apply. If different sources each give multiple delayed effects to the same trigger, the active player decides which source's delayed effects apply first, but multiple delayed effects from the same source all happen before delayed effects from the next source happen.
Example: If two delayed effects on the same personality say "After he assigns, dishonor him, and his controller loses 2 Honor," the effects apply as follows: dishonor him, lose 2 Honor, dishonor him again, lose 2 Honor.
E. Apply any triggered traits on cards. The active player decides the order in which more than one of these effects apply.
F. Reactions may now be taken following an action round procedure. Starting with the active player, each player in turn order has the option to take a Reaction to the trigger or pass. When all players pass consecutively, no more Reactions to that occurrence of the trigger may be taken.
A: Untested Scouts and Sneak Attack are both timed at "After engaging," so:
The effect of Untested Scouts is always applied at Step D.
The opportunity to play Sneak Attack always comes at Step F.
Untested Scouts always comes first and runs its course before you get to Step F where you can play Sneak Attack. Both will have their full effect and not step on each other's toes in any way. Martin Lund, "Untested Scouts plus Sneak/Naval?", 18 Oct 2007 - Q: Does Zamalash's "copy of the action" include the Limited bit, so that he can't copy a Limited action performed by an opponent's rat, or does he just ignore that?
A: His action is a Reaction, meaning it's legal whenever the trigger resolves, and resolves then, effectively giving you two actions in a row. Zen Faulkes, "Untested Scouts & Zamalash", 21 Apr 2005 - Q: Do the Untested Scouts give you a Reaction that lets you play a particular sort of Battle action, or do they let you play the terrain as a Reaction? That is, do the Untested Scouts let you ignore presence when playing the Terrain?
A: Reactions are not bound by Presence (Diamond rules, pg. 80). Zen Faulkes, "Untested Scouts & Zamalash", 21 Apr 2005
