Rulings
- You need not control the Scorpion you want Tangen to substitute for, but it must be legal for Tangen to be present (e.g., he cannot be an univited ally in an battle). Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 93
- You do not necessarily need to control the Scorpion you want Tangen to substitute for [card text], but remember you cannot ever duel yourself and cannot normally move a unit into an army you weren't invited to ally with. Accumulated Rulings, February 8, 2000, p. 18
Rules Q&A
- Q: Blade of Truths Weapon Unique Reaction: After this Personality enters a duel, name a Focus value. The opposing player may not play Focus cards or Reactions with that Focus value during the duel.
Bayushi Kwanchai Text Scorpion Clan Martyr * Soul of Bayushi Tangen Reaction: When any bowed or unbowed Scorpion Clan Personality enters a duel, Kwanchai bows to replace the Personality in the duel. Battle: Once per battle, if Kwanchai is home, send a bowed or unbowed Scorpion Clan Personality in your army home without bowing and move Kwanchai into your army.
Rule Book: If something refers to a value that isn\222t specified or is missing, such as the Focus value of a Follower token or the Gold cost of an Event, consider that value to be 0. Effects that try to change a value that a card does not normally possess failóthe value will always be 0.
So if one of my Personalities who has the Blade of Truths attached enters a duel and I name 0 as the Focus value, my opponent can not use Bayushi Kwanchai\222s reaction because according to the Rule Book if there is no Focus value it is considered 0.
A: Kwanchai can still be used.
#1: Kwanchai's Reaction is used "when" a Personality enters a duel. The Blade's is used "after". Kwanchai's Reaction will always go first. Remember, the first tiebreaker when you have a timing problem is the exact wording of the cards.
#2: The Blade of Truths refers only to Reaction Action cards when it says "may not play Reactions". Yes, this could have been made clearer than just using the ambiguous word "play". Jeff Alexander, "post for 23 July 2002", 24 Jul 2002 - Q: I have two Bayushi Tangen in play, one with an ancestral sword..
I Iajutsu art whit the one without the sword, and then replace him with the other with the ancestral sword.
This move is legal?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 7 November 2001", 8 Nov 2001 - Q: Something just struck me...according to Rokugan custom, the family name comes first (i.e. Bayushi Tangen is from the Bayushi family). So, is Tsuno a family? Things like "Ogre Warrior" or "Goblin Wizard" are obviously just "titles" or "labels". If it was "Tsuno Pack Leader" or "Tsuno Chieftan" or something similar, I'd put it into the label category as well. But "Tsuno Kurushimi" sounds, to me, like a proper name.
A: "Tsuno" is a family name, yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 7 November 2001", 8 Nov 2001 - Q: Bayushi Kwanchai - Does the ruling for Bayushi Tangen apply, so he can substitute for someone else's Scorpion Personality in a duel?
A: Yes. You still can't swap him for a Scorpion personality who's challenging one of your own Scorpions, but other than that, the combo works. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for August 14th", 14 Aug 2001 - Q: Bayushi Kwanchai - Does the ruling for Bayushi Tangen apply, so he can substitute for someone else's Scorpion Personality in a duel?
A: Sure. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for July 23rd", 23 Jul 2001 - Q: In a message dated Wed, 7 Feb 2001 2:01:41 PM Eastern Standard Time, Kakita Kentei writes:
<< I feel much happier about this now that the Bayushi Tangen + Moto Chargersissue has been dealt with.
Could someone enlighten me. I must have missed this ruling. Thanks.
A: I missed it too. Jeff Alexander, "Rules for 6 February 2001", 9 Feb 2001 - Q: In reference to this: http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=95536
Can I can play (in Legacy) 3x Bayushi Tangen and 3x Bayushi Irezu in the same deck?
[Mod Edit: Title changed for Clarity.]
A: No, you may not.
Legacy deck contruction rules are different than KE/EE proxying rules. The two rules exist for totally different reasons and priorities.
In Legacy, the entire "chain" of "Soul of" Personalities are considered to exclude the inclusion of more than 3. Brook Cunningham, "Soul of soul of (in Legacy Format)", 6 Jan 2012 - Q: So, Bayushi Irezu is a Soul of Bayushi Kwanchai which means we can use Kwanchai as a legal proxy for Irezu. However Bayushi Kwanchai is the Soul of Bayushi Tangen.
Irezu = Kwanchai = Tangen
So can I use Tangen as a legal proxy for Irezu?
A: Per the Emperor Edition rulebook, page 116, "“Soul of” Personalities are equivalent to the older card for deck construction purposes. In a game, you may use the older card as a proxy for the “Soul of” version, but you must inform the other player of any differences in stats or wording between the two."
This definition does not take into account any other cards which may also have "Soul of" relationships with the original version of the card. Therefore, as Bayushi Irezu is the Soul of Bayushi Kwanchai, you may only use copies of Bayushi Kwanchai as a proxy for Bayushi Irezu. Jon Palmer, "Soul of a Soul of", 4 Jan 2012
