Rules Q&A
- Q: Utaku Kohana is in an opposed battle. I play shamful&cowardly to give two enemy personalities -3F. Do I gain 1 honor or 2 honor? I looked this up under "Kohana" and "cowardly" and I didn't see anything relevant. I'm assuming that it's one penalty since it comes from one source.

Utaku Kohana EXP.
Unicorn Clan • Samurai • Cavalry • Battle Maiden • Paragon • Experienced • Unique After the resolution of an action which gave a Force penalty to any enemy cards at the current battlefield, if Kohana is there: Gain 1 Honor. Battle: Bow Kohana: Bow a target enemy Personality with lower Personal Honor.
Shameful&Cowardly Political Battle: Dishonor one or two target enemy Personalities. Give each target -3F.
A: You gain 1 honour.
Kohana's trait is triggered by an action (which caused a force penalty), not by a force penalty (from an action). Shameful and Cowardly is one action which creates two force penalties, so the trait triggers once. Alex Jones, "Utaku Kohana EXP&Force Penalty", 21 Jul 2011 - Q: I have Utaku Kohana Exp and Utaku Yanai on a battlefield. Utaku Yanai is dishonored. Utaku Yanai performs her action on a personality that has for example 5F (thus she won't rehonor from conditional 2 Honor gain)(.) Utaku Kohana exp trait triggers. Do i ... : A) gain honor from Utaku Kohana exp trait ? B) rehonor Utaku Yanai?
A: A.
Look at the rules you quoted.
A Personality is rehonored before, "a player gains Honor from an action or trait that targeted... ". Kohana's trait does not target (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Glossary_T#Targeting).
"came from..." The Honor gain came from Kohana, not Yanai (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Glossary_F#From).
"or was performed by..." The Honor gain was not performed by Yanai (or anyone else, since only actions are performed; http://rules.l5r.com/CE_FAQ#What_performs_an_action.3F).
Which of those was not clear? (This is not sarcasm. I would genuinely like to know why this is a question.) Zen Faulkes, "Utaku Kohana EXP & dishonored personalities", 1 Mar 2011 - Q: (W)ith minimum Force as 0F, is a force penalty considered applied after 0F?
A: Penalties still occur even after a card has reached its minimum. See: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Card_features#Calculating_stats
The Experienced Utaku Kohana's trait will go off if a card with 0F gets a -3F penalty, which is then rounded to 0F. Zen Faulkes, "Utaku Kohana (Experienced) and Personalities with 0F", 10 Jul 2010 - Q: My opponent had a dishonored Oni no Akuma in his discard pile. When he attacked, I used Echos of Disgrace, targeting Oni no Akuma and gave 3 of his Personalities -20 F. Since the Force stat of a card cannot be less than 0, when is this penalty calculated? If, for instance, Utaku Kohana recieved a -20F penalty could she gain a +2f bonus and be back to where she was or does she need to dig herself out of the hole?
Edited for correct spelling. Please make sure cards are spelled correctly so that other people searching can find them.
A: An attacking Utaku Kohana, at 2F, is given a -20F penalty from Echoes of Disgrace.
She then gets targeted by Charge, giving her +2F.
Her new force is 2F (base) -20F (Echoes) +2F (Charge) = -16F (apply standard minimum of 0)-->0 Force.
Remember that minimums, whether given by the rulebook or by other cards are always applied last. Dan Jacobson, "Echos of Disgrace+Oni no Akuma+Force Penalties", 19 Nov 2009 - Q: Regarding this viewtopic.php?f=59&t=77894
Kohana's trait triggers to the resolution of an action that gives a force penalty. It appears that low stance gives a force penalty to a personality as a delayed effect.
Kohana's trait reads: After the resolution of an action which gave a Force penalty to any enemy cards at the current battlefield, if Kohana is there: Gain 1 Honor.
Zen said "Because the trait triggers off of the resolution of an action that has a penalty as one of its base effects, not the actual application of the penalty."
It appears to me that while kohana reacts to the resolution of an action, she requires the action to give out a force penalty (something low stance does as a delayed effect). Does this mean that kohana's trait would trigger when someone plays, for example, three stone river? I don't understand how kohana's trait will trigger when there is no immediate force penalty when her trait specifically says "which gave a force penalty to any enemy cards." As I see it the sequence for low stance is:
Play low stance - Low stance resolves. Kohana's trait fails to trigger: there was no force penalty given, only a delayed effect which will create a force penalty. Low stance's delayed effect kicks in, but since low stance has already resolved, kohana's trait can't trigger.
Can you explain to me why kohana's trait will trigger on low stance when low stance doesn't create a force penalty at the time of its resolution, when her trait specifically requires a force penalty to have been resolved and administered to an enemy personality?
A: As Zen says, Utaku Kohana exp's trait is not triggered by Low Stance.
Her trait specifies both a point in time when it triggers and an effect that must have happened by that time. At the timing point when her trait would trigger, Low Stance has not yet created a force penalty. At the effect point when it would trigger, the time is well past. These two are never simultaneously satisfied, so her trait never triggers. Alex Jones, "Utaku Kohana + Low Stance", 28 Jul 2009 - Q: regarding this viewtopic.php?f=59&t=77894
What happens if a player uses low stance and the targeted personality is subsequently killed? There was no force penalty given, so why does kohana xp's trait still trigger?
A: Because the trait triggers off of the resolution of an action that has a penalty as one of its base effects, not the actual application of the penalty.
[See clarification above.] Zen Faulkes, "Utaku Kohana + Low Stance", 28 Jul 2009 - Q: Does Utaku Kohana exp reacts to the battle action of low stance when used?
A: Kohana's reaction is after action resolution, not the bonus. The key point to answer here is, "When does an action resolve?"
http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_R#Resolve: "(An action) stops resolving when its sequence of effect activation has ended, even if the application of some effects has been delayed."
Kohana's trait occurs before the delayed effect kicks in at the end of the Combat Segment. Because her trait refers to the penalty in the past tense ("gave"), the penalty must be an immediate effect, not a delayed effect, for the honor gain to kick in.
(Clarified / fixed.) Zen Faulkes, "Utaku Kohana + Low Stance", 28 Jul 2009 - Q: I have them a force penalty. It just happened to be -0.
A: No.
http://rules.l5r.com/Card_features#Maxi ... _penalties: "A bonus or penalty of +0 or -0 is not a bonus or penalty when you check whether a bonus or penalty was received." Zen Faulkes, "Utaku Plains, Utaku Kohana xp, and dishonored personalities", 22 Jul 2009 - Q: hi, sorry if this seems like a dumb question
Kohana has this trait: After an action resolves which gave a Force penalty to any enemy cards at the current battlefield, if Kohana is there: Gain 1 Honor.
Doomed Undertaking: Battle: Non-Shadowlands Personalities have -2F/-1C while at this battlefield. (similar to the new card that i know your not taking questions on yet Fields of Battle)
does this class as force penalty in the battlefield? if so do i get the honor straight away? also slightly weirder... if someone leaves and comes back the force penalty is re-applied, so do i gain another honor?
thanks for you time.
A: Kohana's ability triggers "after [the] action resolves".
http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_R#Resolve: "An action... stops resolving when its sequence of effect activation has ended, even if the application of some effects has been delayed."
So, once you've played it and all its effects activate, it finishes resolving. Kohana's trigger also checks to see if the action "gave a Force penalty to any enemy cards at the current battlefield" and does so AT THAT TIME. So, after you play the Terrain, if any cards recieved its penalty at that time, Kohana's trait triggers and gives you Honor.
Cards entering the battlefield later than "after [the] action resolves" won't matter. Brook Cunningham, "Utaku Kohana xp + terrains", 17 Jun 2009
