Rules Q&A
- Q: I ran across someone claiming that I could not have (assign/move) multiple copies of a personality at a single battlefield (for example, I could not assign 2x Utaku Tayoi at a single battlefield, nor could I move the second in through alternate means). I can't find anything in the rules that supports this, but it's somewhat hard to search for - I tried using Google search, checking the battle, special wording, and card type rules and couldn't find anything.
Can anyone confirm this rule for me and let me know where it's located?
A: This is not a rule. Jon Palmer, "Copies of the same Personality can't be in battle together?", 10 Jan 2012 - Q: New player here. Ive spent two days searching the forums before posting but am not impressed by the search engine. Apologies if this is elsewhere.
I have a question about delayed actions and removing a Personality from that battle.
Specifically, Utaku Tayoi (or really any similar effect) and, say, Mountains of the Phoenix.
Mountains says: "Battle: Before this battle’s resolution, the Attacker and the Defender each choose a unit in their own army; the active player decides who chooses first. Then, destroy the chosen units."
There are only 2 units at this battlefield: one attacking and one defending. Therefore all combatants currently present will be destroyed before this battle resolves.
Can removing your chosen Personality from this battle save him? For example, by using a power such as:
"Battle: If Tayoi is at a battlefield: Move her to another battlefield. Gain 1 Honor if Tayoi is attacking, or gain 2 Honor if she is now opposed."
This would allow her to "escape" the fight, but would it prevent her from being destroyed?
My guess is NO, it wont save her, since the Strategy MotP has already 'resolved" by being played, but Im curious because it WOULD remove her from the battle's resolution.
Thanks. Kealios San Jose, CA
A: Just playing the terrain as a Battle action does not doom a Personality when he or she is the only one in the battlefield.
The only time a Personality is selected is "Before this battle’s resolution." If a Personality moves out of the battlefield before then, they are not in the army and cannot be selected.
And welcome aboard. Zen Faulkes, "Delayed Actions and escaping them", 2 Jan 2011 - Q: I understand that an action can be taken even if effects will fail. However, this seems like a violation of Good faith even though the letter of the rule (and the explanation in the comprehensive rules) seems like it's technically not.
A: But you have the answer right there; the letter of the Rule IS the letter of the Rule.
An action can be taken even if its effects will fail. True.
Technically, doing so is not a violation of Good Faith. True. (Good Faith only checks Required Targets, ability to pay Costs, and conditions.)
What ever else might "seem" wrong... well, isn't. All 3 of your examples are legal plays. Brook Cunningham, "Utaku Tayoi, "Another" Battlefield, and Good Faith", 1 May 2010 - Q: If I assigned Utaku Tayoi to attack and use her ability move her to another battlefield that had defending units assigned and has already been resolved do I still gain honor for attacking or being opposed?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Utaku Tayoi and resolved battles", 22 Aug 2009 - Q: I am attacking, and my army contains Utaku Yu-Pan exp and Utaku Tayoi. My opponent is defending his final province with a single non-Naval personality, who has no Naval followers attached. Yu-Pan has the Heavenly Kobune of Suitengu attached, and thus has Naval. For my Naval action, I can choose to use Yu-Pan's printed ability, bowing Yu-Pan as the cost, to move the opposing personality home. For my Naval action, can I bow Tayoi as the cost of Yu-Pan's ability?
A: The question is really, "Who performs Utaku Yu-Pan's ability?"
See performance criteria at http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_P-Q#Perform.
Both Utaku Yu-Pan and Utaku Tayoi perform the ability in this case. So it doesn't matter which has the Naval trait. Zen Faulkes, "Utaku Yu-Pan & Naval", 6 Aug 2007
