Rules Q&A
- Q: http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=97000 Follow up to the above:
Really? why wasn't this in a main rules changes.
I went about looking in the War of Honor rules and the legacy Format rules (as linked on the main page *unfortunately it seems the search feature is bloken* ) and could not find any mention of it specifically in legacy.
So it can be expected that if one was playing extended legality (often seen in The old "Utaku plains" used to specify that it could not be taken over 5 PH, this was only removed when the rule was added (that reason specifically given in the errata section of the rules here:http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Rulings_T#The_Utaku_Plains ).
Can we assume that text isn't reinstated with the removal of Maximum personal honor? Thus both the stronghold (and paired with another bonus like Utaku Yu-Pan) will be more than able to bump battle maidens into 6 or higher? (I want to double-check before I tell the battle maiden fans in my area the limit is lifted and let them start breaking our WoH games)
A: Currently, that is the case. No more maximum to PH unless the card effect itself states it. Sorry we missed it in the "EE Rules Changes"; it wasn't the only thing that slipped through without fanfare.
In the future and as always, we'll certainly do our best keep you updated if any Rules, War of Honor or otherwise, change once more. Brook Cunningham, "Maximum Personal honor - follow up", 28 Mar 2012 - Q: I was playing a game today and a situation came up:
I was at a battlefield controlling Utaku Yu-Pan with two penalties; -3f/-1c from Silent Movements and -1f/-1c from a Kyuichi token. The opposing player plays Parley on Yu-Pan, he argued that Yu-Pan would then die since the penalty would be -4f/-2c then the token from Kyuichi would kick in and finish her off. I argued that he needed to give the Kyuichi penalty after using Parley in order for her to die since Parley would 'see' the token and adjust the penalty to -1C instead of -2C if it was already on her.
Which is correct? Does parley take into account the current chi of the personality from all tokens and modify its penalty accordingly? Or does Parley ignore the tokens and current effects and go purely by the personalities base stats, allowing the person to then die from effects already on her before Parley was announced?
Parley Political Battle: Target one of your unbowed Personalities: Target an enemy Personality. Give each target a Force and Chi penalty equal to his own Personal Honor; this cannot reduce Chi below 1.
A: Penalties are normally calculated in the order they were introduced to the card.
So if a personality with 2PH and 3C gets a -1C token and then later someone plays Parley against him, Parley applies against his current 2C, and reduces it to 1C.
If you want to piggy-back off of Parley to kill someone with Chi Penalties you'll need to deliver those penalties AFTER Parley, not before it.
For instance, play Parley to reduce someone to 1C, then use Shosuro Kyuichi's Reaction after Parley to add a -1F/-1C Poison token and finish your victim off. Martin Lund, "Parley and other Chi Penalties", 20 Feb 2008 - Q: (Utaku Yu-Pan Experienced) can send people to a Province in which a battle has been resolved. But, what happens after that?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Battles#After_Resolution: "If no battlefields that haven’t resolved a battle remain, then all units still at battlefields return home, are bowed by resolution if they were attacking or allied, and all battlefields cease to exist." (Emphasis added.) Zen Faulkes, "Utaku Yu-Pan and moving enemy Personalities...", 13 Jan 2008 - Q: You can't seriously be saying that Yu-Pan can throw someone into a Battlefield that has already been resolved, and since it's already been resolved, nothing can happen with him at that Battlefield.
A: There is no rule that a Personality in a resolved battle can't be targeted (although the Rules of Presence and Location will rule most actions out). A Personality in a resolved battle does not become immortal, just hard to hit. Zen Faulkes, "Utaku Yu-Pan and moving enemy Personalities...", 13 Jan 2008 - Q: (I mean, that's just silly.
A: Welcome to my world. Zen Faulkes, "Utaku Yu-Pan and moving enemy Personalities...", 13 Jan 2008 - Q: I am attacking, and my army contains Utaku Yu-Pan exp and Utaku Tayoi. My opponent is defending his final province with a single non-Naval personality, who has no Naval followers attached. Yu-Pan has the Heavenly Kobune of Suitengu attached, and thus has Naval. For my Naval action, I can choose to use Yu-Pan's printed ability, bowing Yu-Pan as the cost, to move the opposing personality home. For my Naval action, can I bow Tayoi as the cost of Yu-Pan's ability?
A: The question is really, "Who performs Utaku Yu-Pan's ability?"
See performance criteria at http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_P-Q#Perform.
Both Utaku Yu-Pan and Utaku Tayoi perform the ability in this case. So it doesn't matter which has the Naval trait. Zen Faulkes, "Utaku Yu-Pan & Naval", 6 Aug 2007
