Rules Q&A
- Q: Can I form Shining Example with ... Bayushi Kamnan (or any unique Samurai) with a samurai follower (say, for instance, a Veteran Samurai) attached..
A: Shining Examples says, "Formed by a Unique Samurai and a non-Unique Samurai."
It does not specify "Personality" anywhere. Samurai Followers count. Martin Lund, "Rules for 12 May 2004", 15 May 2004 - Q: Do followers count towards the requirements of a formation? Meaning, will a Ratling Bushi or Veteran Samurai count as a bushi or samurai when determining if you can play a formation?
A: That completely depends on the individual text of the formation card. If a formation calls for "Bushi" anything with the Trait will do. If a formation calls for "Bushi Personalities" then a follower isn't going to cut it. Martin Lund, "Rules for 22 April 2004", 25 Apr 2004 - Q: So if followers do have a personal honor of 0 (and I think it's been ruled that they do), can I use The Emperor's Underhand to keep a unit with a Veteran Samurai or other Samurai follower from assigning?
A: No. Samurai Followers do not assign (Underhand of the Emperor card text); Personalities or units (which always include a Personality) do. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 4 December 2003", 5 Dec 2003 - Q: I agree with you. That looks legal. I'll see what the Rules Team wants to do about it.
This doesn't seem to follow what you said the paragraph before, Jeff. Doesn't the Veteran Samurai need to be targeted before you start paying Gold for it?
Or is it just that Recruiting Drive declares the discard pile to be equivalent 'as being played from your hand': When it's finally time to take the action, the Samurai are still coming from a legal place?
A: Playing a card doesn't target that card. You say "I play this Veteran Samurai on Personality X," pay its cost, and then play it on Personality X. It doesn't matter that it's not coming from where it was when you started playing it. Jeff Alexander, "post for 25 November 2002", 26 Nov 2002 - Q: Because if gold payment comes first, it looks like I can play Recruiting Drive, generate six gold for a Follower by bowing a Trade Hub and discarding a Veteran Samurai, and then use the gold to pay for the Veteran Samurai I just discarded.
A: I agree with you. That looks legal. I'll see what the Rules Team wants to do about it. Jeff Alexander, "post for 22 November 2002", 23 Nov 2002 - Q: - Can Asako Towers hability make any shugenja cancel an action targeting Veteran Samurai attached to a Fenix personality ?
A: Clan traits don't matter. Your shugenja can bow to cancel an action targeting any of your Veteran Samurai, no matter what the alignment is of the Personality they're attached to. Jeff Alexander, "post for 10 June 2002", 11 Jun 2002 - Q: Just a side note to Jeff, how does Today We Die interact with Veteran Samurai?
A: Today We Die, by implicit grammar, can only target a Samurai Personality. Jeff Alexander, "post for 2 May 2002", 3 May 2002 - Q: 4.) Can I target a Veteran Samurai with Brash Hero? (Is the Veteran Samurai considered to have less than 3 Chi?)
A: My copy says "0" in the Chi lantern, and 0 is less than 3, so, yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 8 April 2002", 9 Apr 2002 - Q: Can a Veteran Samurai be targeted with For The Empire? Can a Veteran Samurai say "Enough Talk!"?
A: No and no. Followers are not legal targets for challenges (giving or receiving) or moving into duels. Dueling can only happen between Personalities without explicit card text otherwise. Jeff Alexander, "post for 8 April 2002", 9 Apr 2002 - Q: Can a Veteran Samurai say "He's Mine"?
A: No. See two paragraphs up. Jeff Alexander, "post for 8 April 2002", 9 Apr 2002 - Q: Can a Veteran Samurai commit Honorable Seppuku if he can be dishonored, and how much Honor do I gain for that?
A: Yes. You gain his printed Personal Honor (treat it as 0). Jeff Alexander, "post for 8 April 2002", 9 Apr 2002 - Q: It appears as though Veteran Samurai, after our recent pre-release, is already opening a can of worms in my area - especially for cards that target Samurai, but do not state Samurai Personalities.
A: Mmmm. Stale worms. Jeff Alexander, "post for 8 April 2002", 9 Apr 2002
