Rules Q&A
- Q: 3) Player A has 2 Voitagis in Battle A, 2 Goblin Wizards in Battle B, and 1 Suiteiru no Oni in Battle C. Which of the following can Player A legally perform? a) Resolve Battle A, let Suiteiru eat one Voitagi and give the tokens to the other Voitagi.
A: Sure. You've got Presence and Relevance in the current Battle. Martin Lund, "Rules for 24 and 25 October 2004", 27 Oct 2004 - Q: b) Resolve Battle A, let Suiteiru eat one Voitagi and give the tokens to a Goblin Wizard or to Suiteiru himself.
A: Sure. You've still got Presence and Relevance. Targeting someone to eat them is enough to meet Relevance. Martin Lund, "Rules for 24 and 25 October 2004", 27 Oct 2004 - Q: c) Resolve Battle A, let Suiteiru eat one Goblin Wizard and give the tokens to a Voitagi.
A: Yes again. Targeting Voitagi to give him tokens meets Relevance, as does creating Tokens in the current battle. Martin Lund, "Rules for 24 and 25 October 2004", 27 Oct 2004 - Q: d) Resolve Battle A, let Suiteiru eat one Voitagi and give the tokens to a Goblin Wizard or to Suiteiru himself.
A: Is this a trick question? It is the same as question "b." The answer is the same. Martin Lund, "Rules for 24 and 25 October 2004", 27 Oct 2004 - Q: The Shadowlands player drops Brutal Confrontation. He then attempts to bow Voitagi to have Iuchiban issue an unrefusable challenge. The Unicorn player says that the bowing Personality is the one doing the challenge. The disagreement gets a judge to come over and it was ruled that the bowing Personality issues the challenge by implication. The Shadowlands player is asking for clarification:
A: The ability in question, granted by Brutal Confrontation reads, "Battle: Bow one of your Personalities to challenge an opposing Personality to an unrefusable duel of Force or Chi."
Only one Personality is specified under the ability. The ability does not reference any of your other Personalities, so that Personality has to be the one doing the challenging and the cost payment. Martin Lund, "Rules for 7 October 2004", 11 Oct 2004 - Q: Can Imperial Messenger be used to increase the honor loss from bringing Voitagi (or similar personality with honor-losing entering play effects) into play?
A: Yes. Martin Lund, "Rules for 11 June 2004", 14 Jun 2004 - Q: 1. Players A's army which consists of an Ashura and a Voitagi opposes player Z 's army which consists of a bowed Ashura and a bowed Votagi. Now we got to resoulution. When player Z's Ashura is destroyed by resolution. Player Z targets player A's Ashura with his Ashura's effect. What happens now? Is players Z's Votagi a legal target for player A's Ashura or must player A destroy his own Votagi?
A: He's got to destroy his own Voitagi, since it is the only one still in play. Battle Resolution will destroy the losing Ashura and Voitagi at the same time, so neither will be valid choices for a retaliatory Ashura effect. Martin Lund, "Rules for 3 June 2004", 6 Jun 2004 - Q: Player A is doing corrupt Crane with Pulse of the Black River active and an Ashura attacking Player B's province, or ambushing, or whatever.
Player B is also doing the corruption love with a Voitagi with Bloodstained Peasents attatched (5 force Unit).
Player A has Ashura "do what he must" and blows him up (with To Do What we Must). Ashura's trait kicks in and destroys Bloodstained Peasents (or some other legal target... I think), then TDWWM resolves to kill the remaining Voitagi...
The question is, how much Honor does Player A get from Pulse?
A: 4 Honor. He destroyed Ashura and Voitagi with an Action. Martin Lund, "Rules for 31 May 2004", 2 Jun 2004 - Q: I'd like to make an appeal argument regarding the ruling on Honored Sensei:

Although Voitagi is a Shadowlands personaility, he is a Human personaility, since he lacks the "nonhuman" keyword.
Honored Sensei specifically states the bonus is garnered from a "non-Shadowlands Naga or Human personality". Voitagi meets the latter requirements of being a Human personality.
There is no restriction of "non-shadowlands personality", nor is there any comma separating the designations "non-shadowlands" and "naga". Therefore, the plain text on the card should be interpreted as such.
If this was not the intent, please issue an errata to cease further confusion.
A: The distributivity rules for adjectives and conjunctions have not changed in a very long time.
On Honored Sensei, "non-Shadowlands" applies to both Naga and Human Personalities. Alex Jones, "Honored Sensei + Voitagi", 10 Apr 2015 - Q: Was wondering if the +1 gold production granted from Honored Sensei can be used to purchase Voitagi.
Honored Sensei
This specifically says "non-Shadowlands Naga or Human Personality", which is different than "non-Shadowlands, Naga, or Human Personality"
Voitagi was ruled as being a Human Personality, he is not a Naga.

A: Voitagi is Human, but he is not Non-Shadowlands, so Honored Sensei will not produce the extra gold for him, nor will you gain honor. Jon Palmer, "Honored Sensei + Voitagi", 10 Apr 2015 - Q: Just looking at the Twenty Festivals Previews on Oracle and noticed that all of the Undead cards currently legal for Twenty Festivals Arc also have the Nonhuman keyword. The only exception to this is Voitagi (http://imperialassembly.com/oracle/#cardid=9182). Is there any specific reason he is missing the keyword?
A: "Why" questions are more the purview of the main L5R forum, but from a Rules perspective, "because he doesn't" is really the only answer I can give. Voitagi is Human (as many Undead cards have been throughout the game's history - I run Wrath of the People in my Modern Breeder deck), the others aren't.
