Rules Q&A
- Q: i am just looking to clarify something if i use Wardens at one battlefield to lower the force of an opposing personality can i use doomed intentions to move to another battlefield and use it again..
the reason i am asking is because of the ruling on city of the rich frog which has similar wording is allowed to use its battle once at each battlefield.

Wardens
Ranged Attacks targeting cards in this unit have -3 strength. Reaction: If this card is in your hand, after you bring a Personality into play without gaining Honor: Attach this card to him (paying all costs). Gain 2 Honor. Battle: Once per battle: Reduce the Force of a target Personality opposing this card by this Personality's Chi
A: Yes you may. Remember that card text can override normal rules. Wardens' Battle action and City of the Rich Frog's Battle action certainly are examples of this. Dan Jacobson, "Wardens and once per battle", 31 Mar 2009 - Q: Does creating a personality using the ability on Venerable Master satisfy the condition for the reaction on Wardens. i.e. Can I attach Wardens using its reaction when Venerable Master makes a created personality during the action phase.
A: Yes, since you've "[brought] a Personality into play without gaining Honour". Alex Jones, "Venerable Master + Wardens", 1 May 2008 - Q: Wardens Text Scout Ranged Attacks targeting cards in this unit have -3 strength. Reaction : If this card is in your hand, after you bring a Personality into play without gaining Honor: Attach this card to him (paying all costs). Gain 2 Honor. Battle : Once per battle: Reduce the Force of a target Personality opposing this card by this Personality's Chi.
Supply Outpost Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold. If this pays for a Personality, you may attach a Follower, Item, or Spell to him from your hand after he enters play, reducing its Gold Cost by 3 until it attaches.
Question:
Will you still able to gain 2 honor from Warden's reaction when using a Supply Outpost on putting out a peep? Need your great minds on this matter. Thank you very much in advance.
A: I did a Search of the CCG - Rules Forum for "wardens supply outpost" and found this for you: Wardens & Supply Outpost Martin Lund, "Supply outpost on Wardens", 4 Mar 2008 - Q: Regarding Wardens + Houhou from a while back:
The reason given previously was that "enters play without gaining honor" doesn't apply only to the Dynasty phase. In fact, I couldn't even ask the question without supposing that to be true in advance, so it didn't really help to answer the question. (i.e. if that phrase did apply only to Dynasty, Wardens would never be able to attach in the first place) Also, you point out that Wardens makes no mention of source for the honor, a point which I grant, but still doesn't seem pertinent. In particular, why am I waiting until the end of the action to prevent myself from taking it when a perfectly good trigger already exists midway through it?
1) Houhou entering play and the 3 honor are two entirely separate effects, with a period interposed between them. To quote the CR:
"If mandatory costs and required targeting have been met, activate the action’s effects in order (see Effects, Order of Effects). If not, the action does not resolve.
Effects of an action are independent. If any effect is negated, does not happen, or fails to occur (for example, bowing an already bowed Personality, or moving him to a location he was already in), the other effects still happen, and the action is still legal. [ADDED Oct 17 2007]"
Given the nature of action parsing, you should be able to see why I'm looking for a more thorough explanation, no? I wouldn't have bothered asking the question if Houhou was worded "Bring her into play, paying 4 less Gold and gaining 3 Honor." At least in that case, the honor gain is arguably bound to the entering play effect. As it stands, they're two entirely different effects that aren't conjoined. If any sort of blind-card ruling exists, I don't see why I'm looking ahead in an action to prevent myself from taking a Reaction with an immediately valid trigger. The personality enters play -without netting honor- in much the same way as a person re-entering play because of the card Will. We aren't arguing that Wardens can't react to Will, are we?
2) Even if we were inclined to liken this to a Dynasty phase entering-play honor gain, that happens in advance of the personality entering play, so there's no question of Wardens' function at that point. When the personality enters play during Dynasty, an honor gain has clearly already happened.
3) Further proof, according to the CR:
"Effects occur in the order they are written. All effects are separate, even if joined by the word "and." ... EXCEPTION: Phrases modifying effects may come after the effect’s text, but are applied at the same time as the effect. Such phrases will directly refer to the effect, increasing or reducing its restrictions or scope. Modifying phrases refer to the immediately previous effect text, unless they explicitly refer to another effect or to multiple effects. Modifying phrases that refer to multiple effects refer to all relevant effects in that trait or ability."
I'm not seeing any references to the entering play effect in the honor gain effect. It seems fairly unmodified. Am I misunderstanding this? Can it be explained with just a smidge greater detail?
A: The arguments are understood, as they were before. The ruling has not changed. We will let you know if they do, which is possible. Zen Faulkes, "Re: Houhou + Wardens", 5 Feb 2008 - Q: Since we can't gain honor for bringing a personality into play outside of dynasty, isn't it unavoidable that we have a trigger for Warden's reaction? After all, it's Houhou's action that's giving the honor (in a later stage of the action, at that), and not Houhou entering play.
A: Wardens says nothing about the source of the honor gain, and there is no rule saying "bringing a Personality into play without Honor" only refers to the Dynasty phase. Ruling stands for the moment. Zen Faulkes, "Houhou + Wardens", 6 Jan 2008 - Q: Am I correct in assuming I cannot use the Wardens' Reaction to attach to Houhou if I bring into play using her Limited ability?
A: That looks right. Zen Faulkes, "Houhou + Wardens", 2 Jan 2008 - Q: The Wardens Reaction says "After you bring a Personality into play without gaining honor...". Does this mean if I bring a Personality into play during the Dynasty Phase and don't gain their PH (either for an out-of-clan person or because I didn't pay full price) and I react with Asako Keiki to gain honor, am I now unable to attach Wardens to the card I just brought into play?
A: You didn't gain honor when you brought the Personality into play, you gained Honor from an action. Wardens is fine. Zen Faulkes, "Wardens + Asako Keiki", 2 Dec 2007 - Q: Was wondering how the following two cards mesh, a player wants to use supply outpost to attach wardens after a personality enters play reducing the gold cost and gain honor for doing so, however by my reading of wardens the honor gain only occurs if they are attached by their own reaction and not the effect from supply outpost. Thus requiring him to pay their gold cost normally if he wants the honor.
Does the honor gain occur if attached via the outpost? Or only when brought into play via the text on wardens? (requiring their gold cost be paid without reduction)
Supply Outpost: Bow this card: Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold. If this pays for a Personality, you may attach a Follower, Item, or Spell to him from your hand after he enters in play, reducing its Gold cost by 3 until it attaches.
Wardens Reaction: If this card is in your hand, after you bring a Personality into play without gaining Honor: Attach this card to him (paying all costs). Gain 2 Honor.
A: They don't mesh well. You resolve one or the other completely. Either you use the triggered effect and put him into play for 0G (at which point he's not in your hand so you can't use the Reaction), or you use the Reaction and put him into play, gaining honor (at which point he's not in your hand so reducing his Gold Cost and playing his is out of the question).
