Rulings
- Erratum: Reads, "Warrens of the Nezumi 13PS 3GP 1FH You begin the game with three Provinces. NonPersonality Ratling cards cost 1 less Gold for you. Your Ratling cards cannot gain Shadowlands, are immune to Fear, and have the ability, 'Battle: Bow and destroy this card to destroy an opposing follower.'" [MRP, Diamond Edition, 27 October 2003] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 153
- Q: Now that Warrens of the Nezumi have been released, can I name "Ratling" for Alliance? A: Not yet. "Ratling" isn't listed in the Soul of the Empire rulebook as one of the Clans. This means that Warrens of the Nezumi players can't pay 2 less Gold for Ratlings, nor can they gain Honor for hiring them at full cost. (The Nezumi Stronghold article in the last issue of the Imperial Herald was written before than information was available. Sorry.) The Imperial Herald, Issue 16, p. 12
- Warrens/Ratling FAQ: Your Ratlings are all considered Unaligned. The Stronghold does not confer a Clan ability and has nothing to do with a Clan of any name. You are essentially working with a Stronghold whose major members are Unaligned (and unorganized). As a recap: The Warrens Stronghold does not have a Clan trait. You cannot purchase Ratling Personalities as though they were a member of a Clan (i.e., you cannot get them into play for 2 less Gold, nor do you receive Honor for bringing them into play). Personalities (of any kind) cannot swear fealty to the Ratlings, as "Ratling" is not a Clan affiliation. The Warrens player may use Sensei with the All Clans or Ratling traits in deck construction. The Imperial Herald, Issue 16, p. 34
Rules Q&A
- Q: My question concernes the following: Warrens of the Nezumi (all your Ratlings have the ability "Battle: Bow and destroy this card to destroy an opposing follower)
Kan'ok'ti'chek (whenever one of your Ratling Followers attatched to your Ratling Personalities is destroyed, return it to play attatched and Unbowed to [this personality])
Ratling Archers (make a RA 2 attack once per turn without bowing).
Lets say they are attatched to Yo'eetr or some such, they use their attack, and then blow themselves up to destroy an opposing follower, they get re-attatched to Kan'ok... can they use their RA again? Or does the "until end of turn" apply still after they are dead?
A: By default, everything in L5R applies after the card is dead, since leaving play does not automatically cause any effects to end. The Archers' ability has been used this turn. It cannot be used again. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 4 March 2004", 5 Mar 2004 - Q: Can a Ratling player using the Warrens of the Nezumi bow and destroy a ratling follower token to destroy an opposing follower?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 21 November 2003", 21 Nov 2003 - Q: Can I bow and destroy the 0F Ratling follower created from Ratling Village to satisfy the cost of the [Warrens of the Nezumi stronghold]?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 11 November 2003", 12 Nov 2003 - Q: * Warrens of the Nezumi. Errata: None. Oops. Now I _know_ other errata are missing. I only need to hunt them down. Yuck.
A: Well, there is no errata on the Warrens. There's an MRP, which is different. And since that MRP is also in the book, on the very last page, its differences weren't typed out separately. Jeff Alexander, "post for 1 May 2003", 2 May 2003 - Q: Here's something that just occured to me...
The Seppun Temples lowers the costs of all followers by 4, to a minimum of 1, when you bring a personality into play from it and attach followers from your hand. The Warrens of the Nezumi lowers the cost of all non-personality ratling cards by 1. Does that mean that for followers attaching to the Seppun Temples peep which cost 5G or less are free for Warrens players?
A: No. The Warrens discount is applied as soon as the game begins. The Seppun Temples discount does not apply until you use its effect. You can't take the Temples reduction first. Jeff Alexander, "post for 21 November 2002", 22 Nov 2002 - Q: Now that I have access to local tournaments, I find that there are a number of ratling players around here (about 1/3 of the players seem to prefer ratlings). Being that I haven't played much for a few years, I've forgotten a couple of things that I can't seem to find answers for in my searches.
1) When playing Warrens of the Nezumi, with Ratling Villages, can I get the Ratling Pack token off of the Villages for free with the Warrens reduction.
A: No. You are not paying the Gold cost of a Follower. You are paying the Gold cost of an action on a Region. Jeff Alexander, "post for 11 October 2002", 12 Oct 2002 - Q: Just a quick question on the Warrens of the Nezumi.
What is the design on the banner?
A: It's bits and pieces of other Clan Mons. Jeff Alexander, "post for 15 April 2002", 16 Apr 2002 - Q: I haven't seen this asked and can not find it in the Archive. If I was playing the Warrens of the Nezumi and brought out the New Dark Oracle of the Earth. When I use it and Flip over a Ratling what happens? Do all affects happen except my Rat doesn't gain the Shadowlands trait?
A: The Warrens protects "your" Ratling cards from the Shadowlands trait. We're consistently using the rulebook definition of "your" in Gold Edition and beyond, so that protection only extends to Ratling cards in play under your control. A Ratling Personality still in your Province can be tainted. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 April 2002 pt. 2", 8 Apr 2002 - Q: On a side note, what happens with Warrens of the Nezumi + Dark Oracle of Earth, assuming you turn up a Shadowlands card?
A: You mean a Ratling card, don't you? It would not gain the Shadowlands trait. Jeff Alexander, "post for 10 December 2001", 10 Dec 2001 - Q: Does the Battle ability of the [Warrens of the Nezumi] Stronghold mean that ratling followers can bow and destroy themselves to destroy a follower?
A: Exactly. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for July 27th", 27 Jul 2001 - Q: Another related question is on cards that are specific about ratlings, ie. the trait "Ratlings in this army gain +1F" and similar. If i oath a human out of the Warrens of the Nezumi, do they gain the ratling, or nezumi alignment.
A: They gain "Ratling" now, as that is the formal alignment trait for the Ratling Faction given in the latest rulebook. They'll get that Force bonus. Jeff Alexander, "replies to 6-9 July 2001", 19 Jul 2001 - Q: In GOLD edition will the Warrens of the Nezumi be considered a ratling stronghold?
A: It always has been a Ratling stronghold. (I mean, what else would it be?) Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 27 June 2001", 27 Jun 2001
