- Erratum: Reads, "Bayushi Yojiro 3F/5C -HR 10G 2PH Scorpion Clan Champion. Samurai. Experienced 2. Unique. Yojiro will only join a Scorpion player. Each Scorpion Clan Personality you control gains +1 Personal Honor while Yojiro is in play. Open: If you have no Shadowlands cards in play, permanently lower Yojiro's Chi by 1 to raise your Family Honor to your starting Family honor. This is not considered an Honor gain." [MRP, Gold Edition, 1 July 2001] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 94
- Q: So that means I won't gain extra honor for buying a Personality at full price while I have the Experienced 2 Bayushi Yojiro or the Experienced Ki-Rin's Shrine? But everyone I know says I do! A: For a while, the rule was that you did, but in Broken Blades the rules changed slightly. Now, when you bring a Personality into play for full price during your Dynasty Phase, you gain Honor right before she enters play, so effects that boost her Personal Honor while she's in play have not yet raised it. Note that Personalities that enter play dishonored will still give you a 0-point Honor gain if brought into play at full price, which will not restore them to Honorable status. Rules Q&A
- Q: Ok I followed up on the rules archive and found this:
In Time of War Reads, "In Time of War For the rest of the game, no player's Family Honor may rise over 5 points from what it was when the turn began. This applies only to total Family Honor, and does not modify individual losses or gains." [MRP, Diamond Edition, 27 October 2003] Does not limit changes in honor total for increases that are not considered Honor gains (e.g., Experienced 2 Bayushi Yojiro). [Reversal, JA, 16 December 2001] If you exceed the maximum Family Honor allowed, your Family Honor becomes that maximum at the end of the turn. [JA, 1 October 2002]
Which would lead me to believe that I would get the full amount but then at the end of my turn IToW then lowers (in a sense) all honor gains to 5 over what I started with. Since I cannot gain more than 5 over what I started with.
So the last part of the rules archive should read:
If you exceed the maximum Family Honor allowed in a turn, your Family Honor becomes the maximum allowed at the end of the turn. Meaning 5 over what I started with.
A: No. Your Family Honor is held at or below that maximum all turn long. It does not drop just at the end.
That ruling is in the archive because someone pointed out a technicality that when the cap changes at the end of the turn, any extra gains that it prevented from adding will re-apply and players will get them anyway. This ruling fixes that abuse. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 22 March 2004", 23 Mar 2004 - Q: From the FAQ: Q: So that means I won’t gain extra honor for buying a Personality at full price while I have the Experienced 2 Bayushi Yojiro or the Experienced Ki-Rin’s Shrine? But everyone I know says I do! A: For a while, the rule was that you did, but in Broken Blades the ruleschanged slightly. Now, when you bring a Personality into play for full price during your Dynasty Phase, you gain Honor based on her Personal Honor just before she enters play, so effects that boost her Personal Honor her while she’s in play don’t have a chance to raise it first. Note that Personalities that enter play dishonored will still give you a 0-point Honor gain if brought into play at full price, which will not restore them to Honorable status.
Question: If I play ‘Company you Keep’ on a dishonored personality and the opposing player pays full price on a a greater than 0 PH personality entering play, and since the new personality is entering with a 0 point honor gain, can I use Doji Nagori to increase the honor gain from 0 to 1.
A: Yes. Paying full price for an aligned Personality with 0 Personal Honor generates a 0-point honor gain, which can be modified by cards such as Nagori. Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 November 2002", 19 Nov 2002 - Q: 4 - If I attach a Yoshi's fan to a dishonored personality, does the Personal Honnor is zeor or 1? I should say 0 but want to be sure. Same question about Bayushi Yojiro XP2 and Ki Rin Shrine XP.
A: 0 and 0. See #3. Jeff Alexander, "post for 29 October 2002", 30 Oct 2002 - Q: Um - just got done looking at the list of rulings on deathseeker - Ki-Rin Shrine EXP and Bayushi Yojiro Exp 2 (or 3 whichever it is) NO LONGER ADD HONOR WHEN BUYING PEEP IN FOR FULL? When did this happen?
A: When Broken Blades officially went on sale. The rulesheet in that set changed the timing of how honor is gained. Jeff Alexander, "post for 17 October 2002", 18 Oct 2002 - Q: Bayushi Yojiro (Exp2)
Open: If you have no Shadowlands cards in play, permanently lower Yojiro's Chi by 1 to raise your Family Honor to your starting Family Honor. This is not considered an Honor gain.
Can I use an attached Badge of Purity to negate the loss of chi, while "gaining" the honor?
A: No. The way Yojiro is worded, his Chi loss is a cost of that action. If you prevent him from paying the cost, the action is canceled. [p. 45] Jeff Alexander, "post for 29 August 2002", 30 Aug 2002 - Q: With the questions raised on Rain of Emeralds, I have one just to clarify my thinking (not sure that will ever happen....)
Event in question: Tsukune Ascends Remove your Personality with the highest Force from the game. You choose in the case of a tie. All your other Personalities permanently gain +1 Force, +1 Chi, and +1 Personal Honor. 'Arise, Tsukune, Fortune of Rebirth. Take your place among the Celestial Heavens.'
Questions: 1. Since, unlike Rain of Emeralds, Tsukune Ascends doesn't say in play, does it affect the personalities in your Deck/Discard or when they come into play later that game?
No. "Your" = "controlled by you", and only cards in play have controllers. [DA glossary, p. 77]
As you have stated above, this would appear to contradict earlier rulings on Bayushi Yojiro and Kirin's Shrine (Experienced). Bayushi Yojiro states "Each Scorpion Clan Personality you control gains..." and Kirin's Shrine states "...your human Personalities gain +1F/+1C and your Dragon...." In both cases, the rulings have been that personalities entering play gain the +1 personal honor after entering play, but before honor for bringing them in is gained.Perhaps it would be clearer to state that since, unless otherwise stated, the effect of Events only lasts until the end of the current turn, and that is why Tsukune Ascends only affects personalities currently in play.
A: But that's NOT the reason why Tsukune Ascends only affects Personalities currently in play. The reason is that it's worded to happen once, instantaneously, applying only to what meets its criteria at that time, while Yojiro and the Ki-Rin's Shrine are continuously applying. Jeff Alexander, "post for 4 June 2002", 5 Jun 2002 - Q: Does the +1 personal honor add to your honor if you pay full for the personality??
A: These bonuses add before honor is gained, so yes, they increase the honor you get for buying an in-clan Personality at full price. Jeff Alexander, "post for 24 January 2002", 24 Jan 2002 - Q: Encountered a persitent reoccurance of existing misinformation, specifically, the idea that an effect specifying "all of your personalities" will affect not only all personalities you currently control, but all potential personalities in your Dynasty deck. Suggest that this idea stems from the existing rulings regarding personal honor and honor gained for personalities on Bayushi Yojiro exp2 and Ki-Rin's Shrine exp (q.v.).
A: Don't discount the influence of At'tok'tuk Sensei, et. al. Their incorrect usage of the term "your" and the subsequent rulings that supported intent rather than wording also confound the issue. Jeff Alexander, "post for 11 January 2002", 12 Jan 2002 - Q: I had asked about this to the list a few weeks ago and was told that he still worked effectively the same as before. It was explained to me that it was an extension of the Toturi ruling in which he enters play, becomes dishonored, and then you gain honor from him (which is, of course, 0).
A: There's a difference in the wording. Toturi says he "enters play dishonored." Not "enters play, then is dishonored." He's essentially dishonored in your Dynasty deck.
Bayushi Yojiro (Exp. 2), on the other hand, refers to Personalities you control. You don't control a Personality until you have paid all costs and the Personality has completely entered play. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 2-7 August 2001", 9 Aug 2001 - Q: Bayushi Yojiro (exp 2) - I assume he raises his own Personal Honor. Do you gain 2 or 3 honor if you pay his full cost to bring him into play?
A: Um...3. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for July 23rd", 23 Jul 2001 - Q: If I have a Fortress of the Dragon Fly in play and Osen exp. sitting in my province, can I bring him out to nuke a 4 Chi personality?
I guess so, because...
The fortress does not say, "While the personalities are in Play" so does this affect personalities in the deck?
Following the precedent for Bayushi Yojiro (Exp. 2), I have no choice but to say, "Yes, it does."
A: Don't use Yojiro Exp2 as a precedent. His current wording template is admitedly poor and doesn't match intent. (It will in Gold, thankfully.) Fortress of the Dragonfly, like most everything else, applies only to Personalities in play.
That being said, the ruling is nonetheless correct. Since it's ambiguous whether he gets the +1C before or after he uses his reaction, it's up to the active player to decide. Typically, she'll chose to apply the +1C first. Jeff Alexander, "replies to 12-13 June", 16 Jun 2001
