Rulings
- Erratum: Reads, "Wedge 0G 2FV Battle: Battle: Target a unit you control at the current battlefield. You cannot target cards in the unit with actions until after the battle ends. Destroy the unit when the battle ends. If the unit is still at the battlefield at the beginning of the Resolution Segment, double the Force of the Personality and each Follower in the unit." [MRP, Lotus Edition, 31 October 2005] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 39
- Multiples are not cumulative. Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 39
- A defending Personality may be saved by Explored Territory, because defending Personalities remain at the battlefield and the terrain is still in play at the battlefield when the Personality starts to get destroyed. [ML, 17 May 2004; JA, 25 June 2004] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 39
- Is not a Force bonus. It makes the unit add its Force to your army twice, which is a very different effect. Multiples are not cumulative. The unit is destroyed immediately after the battle is over regardless of whether it is still in the army. [card text] Accumulated Rulings, February 8, 2000, p. 62
- Since it only prohibits you from targetting the unit with further actions "in this battle", you may target the unit with cards such as Feign Death if it survives resolution and is destroyed by Wedge's own effect "after this battle is over". [card text] Accumulated Rulings, February 8, 2000, p. 62
- Q: Is Wedge a Force bonus? Can I reduce it to 0 with In Search of the Future? A: By the Most Recent Printing rule, all versions of Wedge provide a Force bonus. (The previous printing worked differently.) Reactions to Force bonuses, such as Overconfidence, may be played in response to this gain when it happens. In Search of the Future is not a useful strategy against it, though, because In Search of the Future is a Battle action that only affects bonuses already present, while Wedge does not add its bonus until the Resolution Segment begins -- and in that stage of the attack, Battle actions like In Search are no longer legal. Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, April 26, 2004, p. 11
- Q: Can I use a card like Feign Death to bring a Wedged Personality back to life after Wedge's effect kills him? A: No. Feign Death targets the Personality you wish to return to play. Wedge destroys the Personality "when the battle ends" and prohibits you from targeting him with actions until "after" that time. Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, April 26, 2004, p. 11

Rules Q&A
- Q: Situation: I Wedge the 3F/1C Scorpion Clan Samurai created from Shosuro Infiltrator(SI). Questionable results: Wedge destroys the Samurai when the battle ends. Since it has been ruled that Bayushi Kwanchai Exp. can negate a Scorpion Clan personality's death from Wedge and since the timing on the final effects of SI and Wedge conflict ("remove from game" and "unable to target" both happen "after the battle ends,") can I choose to have the "remove from game" effect happen before the "unable to target" effect and keep the 3F/1C Scorpion Clan Samurai permanently? If so can I finish the rest of SI's effect and return it to play attached to the original personality?
A: Since when does Shosuro Infiltrator target anything? Cards don't have to target themselves to use their own abilities that can't target someone else instead. There isn't any choice in the matter with a clear self-reference, so there is no targeting decision.
Wedge can't prevent the infiltrator from removing itself from the game. Martin Lund, "Rules for 8 December 2004", 10 Dec 2004 - Q: can anyone explain to be the process and timing wherein a 4 force personality with a +2 force follower ends up with more than 12 force after a Wedge?
A: It is a situation dealing with Conflicting Simultaneous Effects, so it will fall to the Cardinal Rule regarding such instances (player's choice). It is a conflict basically due to the fact that you can not perform the mathematical operations of addition and multiplication simultaneously, so someone has to choose whether to double the Personality's Force before or after doubling the Force of a Follower with an additive Force stat. Martin Lund, "Rules for 29 October 2004", 5 Nov 2004 - Q: Put another way, Wedge and Berzerker Rage do not actually increase force, they merely reset it based on some formula. The new value is indeed higher than the previous, but it is technically NOT a force increase, and so not eligible for force gain reactions such as Overconfidence.
A: Nope. That's completely false. Berserker Rage and Wedge both create Force Bonuses as well, typically +X where X = targets current Force at the time of doubling. They are both subject to Overconfidence to great effect. Martin Lund, "Rules for 23 July 2004", 26 Jul 2004 - Q: My opponent has a Hitomi Daisetsu and a Togashi Kansuke as the only units in his army. He plays Wedge on Kansuke. I play Overwhelmed. What can/must he do?? He can't send both of them home becuase he can't target his Kansuke. He can't destroy Kansuke because he can't target him.
A) He sends home Daisetsu but leaves Kansuke. B) He does nothing at all.
B seems like the correct answer to me, but I'm not sure.
A: It used to be that you would send Daisetsu home, since that's the only option that will do anything but fail completely.
However, the MRP in Diamond says, "He must choose to destroy a Personality if he cannot send two units home." I can't argue with explicit card text.
So you must choose the destroy option, which fails.
Unless Jeff says otherwise, you're right. It'll be answer B - do nothing. Martin Lund, "Rules for 7 June 2004", 10 Jun 2004 - Q: Okay, how does the +3F interact with a Wedge?
A: Nothing special. Heart of the Hero isn't a conflicting bonus, but a modification of Wedge's own bonus effect. It now gives a bonus sufficient to raise your force to 2X + 3 where X was your original force. Martin Lund, "Rules for 31 May 2004", 2 Jun 2004 - Q: Can Explored Territory save your personality from being destroyed by Wedge?
A: It depends. You need to still be in the battle for Explored Territory to save you.
You have to send Attacking and Allied units go home after the battle is "resolved" (losing / tied armies are destroyed, honor gained), but before the battle is considered "ended." Then Wedge will destroy your unit.
If you were in the Defending Army, and there are still more battles to resolve, then you'd be fine since you are still at the (resolved) battle. Explored Territory would save you since Wedge kills your "when" the battle ends, and terrains are destroyed "after" the battle ends. Martin Lund, "Rules for 14 May 2004", 17 May 2004 - Q: So, true or false, for Archive purposes.
The Right Hand of the Emperor can negate the movement of a unit which has been targeted by Wedge.
A: True. The Reaction on Right Hand of the Emperor can Negate a movement Effect which would've moved a Unit targeted by Wedge. Martin Lund, "Rules for 21 April 2004", 23 Apr 2004 - Q: Lets say you Wedge one of your guys with a weapon or armor attached. At the beginning of resolution, they play a overconfidence in reaction to the doubling of force. Can you then play an armed in ready to straighten that guy (along with all the other people with weapon or armor)? So basically is the armed and ready a blanketing effect that doesnt target (since it says all), or does the specifying of your people and only the ones with weapons or armor, make it targeted?
A: "If no player, under any circumstance, has to choose what gets affected, the action is not targeted." (L5R FAQ, Section 2, "Clarifying the Rules")
It shouldn't target. No one gets to choose what it affects, ever, unless I'm missing something here. Martin Lund, "Rules for 18 April 2004", 20 Apr 2004 - Q: If player A attacks, sending 2 units, and player B defends with 1 unit. As the first action, player B passes, player A wedges the unit led by the higher force personality. Player B plays overwhelmed and destroys his unit.
Now, what does player A do?
A: Strangely enough, he does nothing.
Under the new wording of Overwhelmed, he's forced to choose the "destroy" option. "He must choose to destroy a Personality if he cannot send two units home." (card text)
He can't target the Wedge'd Personality with Actions, so he does nothing. Waste of an Overwhelmed if you ask me. Martin Lund, "Rules for 7 April 2004", 8 Apr 2004 - Q: Hi! Player A plays Wedge on his only unit in this battle. Player B plays Overwhelmed. What happens: A) Player B destroys his unit as a cost, player A destroys his as effect; B) Player B destroys his unit as a cost, player A cannot target his unit, action ends?
A: B.
Wedge prevents Player A from targeting his unit and all cards in it with any actions. That includes other players' actions that force him to pick a target for some of their effects (like Overwhelmed and Shosuro Maru).
Any action that is ever targeted is always considered targeted, even in game situations where there are no alternative choices. [DE p. 72] Jeff Alexander, "rules for 17 March 2004", 18 Mar 2004 - Q: I'm pretty sure that my question has already been answered, but I couldn't find it in the archive - questions concerning Wedge or Overwhelmed have been asked too many times ;-)
I oppose one single personality which has been wedged and play Overwhelmed. Since DE Rulebook says: An actions targets something if it uses the word "target" or if any player sometimes has to choose what it affects. [p.72], there shouldn't be a target and the personality is destroyed. His controller doesn't have a choice.
A: You are overlooking a key word: "sometimes".
In this situation, there is only one possible Personality to destroy. However, that is not always the case. If a card offers a choice in some games but not in others, it is a targeted effect in all games. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 23 Feb. 2004", 24 Feb 2004 - Q: You have one Wedge personality in the battle and no unbowed gold producing holdings. You play Barren Fields. The battle ends and you can't target the Wedged personality correct?
A: Correct. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 18-19 Feb. 2004", 20 Feb 2004 - Q: With T'k in play if I play Ogre Hordes and Wedge, what does T'k end up as, 6F or 8F?
It seems to me it should be 8F because of timing, but I'm not what you'd call a rules expert.
A: Delayed Terrains resolve immediately before the Battle Action Segment ends. Wedge doubles Force when the Resolution Segment begins, which is after that. T'k would be 8F. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 16 Feb. 204", 18 Feb 2004 - Q: Does epkees ability negate the force bonus of Wedge?
It seems that the whole timing thing has me confused.
A: Are both armies still opposing each other? Yes -- the Resolution Segment has just begun when Wedge changes the unit's Force. Nothing has died yet.
Does Wedge give the Personality a Force bonus? Yes, unless the Personality is 0F. [MRP of Wedge, DE p. 62]
Ep'kee's Reaction is legal. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 6 Feb. 2004", 7 Feb 2004 - Q: *Bawaru no Oni reads: "At the beginning of the Resolution Segment, straighten Bawaru no Oni if there are any unbowed opposing Personalities."
*Wedge reads : "Battle: Target one of your units in this battle. You cannot target that unit or cards in it with actions until after the battle ends. Destroy the unit when the battle ends. If the unit is still in this army at the beginning of the Resolution Segment, double the Force of the Personality and each Follower in the unit."
*Overconfidence reads: "Reaction: When a personality has recieved from an action a force bonus more than or equal to his or her printed chi, bow the personality. The Personality cannot straighten during his or her controller's next straighten phase."
If a Wedged Bawaru no Oni is Overconfidenced, can his trait straighten him?
A: Yes. Overconfidence only prohibits straightening "during his or her controller's next straighten phase." [card text]
Notice that it's important that the active player choose to apply Wedge's Force increase before Bawaru's trait. They both happen "at the beginning of the Resolution Segment". If the active player declares that Bawaru's trait applies first, it can't help him. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 4 Feb. 2004", 5 Feb 2004 - Q: I'm also unsure why Zen thinks that they cannot use their reaction to Wedge - as their timing is implicitly before the destruction of the unit (card text).
A: Because Zen's a goof. Or, "Whoops." Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 15 December 2003, Part 3", 16 Dec 2003 - Q: If I use Wedge on a bloodspeaker, then he dies, can I put him underneath the Pit of Blood?
A: No (http://l5r.com/ccg/faq.html#s4). (I say again: There is no way the Rules Junta is going to let anyone get around Wedge's destruction of the unit!) Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 13 December 2003", 13 Dec 2003 - Q: My opponent plays Wedge on a Bawaru no Oni. At the begining of resolution I play Overconfidence to bow the Oni. Does Bawaru's trait then straigten him before total force is compared?
A: Both Wedge's bonus and the oni's trait occur at the beginning of resolution, so the Third Cardinal Rule kicks in. Active player chooses. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 6 December 2003", 6 Dec 2003 - Q: Can I bow a Wedging Personality with Overconfidence [?]
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 22 November 2003", 23 Nov 2003 - Q: If I Wedge my Ashura, and it dies from the Wedge effect, does Ashura's trait destroy an opposing follower/personality before it dies?
A: No. Units are detroyed at battle resolution, Wedge destroys after that. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 14 November 2003", 14 Nov 2003 - Q: Can you use the reaction on Omoidasu when you have a Wedge resolving on the same unit (destroying it)?
A: Yes. Choosing to use an ability is not targeting (Diamond Edition rules, pg. 73). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 14 November 2003", 14 Nov 2003 - Q: If I Wedge a peep with Yu, can I bring him/her back with Kisada's Shrine?
A: No (FAQ; http://l5r.com/ccg/faq.html). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 13 November 2003, Part 2", 14 Nov 2003 - Q: Can I reanimate my personality targeted with Wedge by using Feign Death when it dies due to Wedge effect ?
A: No. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 10 November 2003, Part 2", 11 Nov 2003 - Q: I would think "when the battle ends" is not the same as "after the battle ends" but in Zen's archive it reads: "The unit is destroyed immediately after the battle is over regardless of whether it is still in the army. [Card text]"
But I would think that things which occur "when" the battle ends actually take place before anything "after" the battle.
A: This is just another ruling that needs to be tweaked slightly to reflect the Diamond wording. The basis of the ruling was just that if the unit gets sent home or moves to another battle, yes, you still have to destroy it.
Seriously, folks, take archived rulings about cards that just got reprinted in Diamond with a few grains of salt. As much as I have tried to get things up to speed, there are going to be minor little out-of-date things for some time. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 10 November 2003, Part 2", 11 Nov 2003 - Q: I target somebody with Yu with Wedge[.] I then destroy the unit when the battle ends as per Wedge. At that point, could I target the unit with Kisada's Shrine?
A: No. Wedge destroys "when" the battle ends but continues to prevent targeting until "after." Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 6 November 2003", 6 Nov 2003 - Q: if my opponent plays Overwhelmed, who's targeting the peeps I choose to kill or to send home ?
A: You (card text). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 31 October 2003", 31 Oct 2003 - Q: I'm not talking about Wedge or Shinjo's Breath, I'm talking about those cards which don't quite make the cut in Open, but might in Gold.
My choices, A to E: Court Jester
A: It already has a substitute: Imperial Scrutiny (AOF). Jeff Alexander, "post for 6 May 2002", 7 May 2002 - Q: Greetings.
I have a question. If I play Wedge on my Personality can I also play a Swifter than Sight as an interrupt to negate my Personality's death?
Thank you for your help in advance.
A: Indeed you can! C-c-c-combo! Brook Cunningham, "Swifter than Sight vs Wedge", 19 Aug 2015 - Q: Ok,
so on the forums Palmer answered this already, but I don't think the answer was correct.
Wedge does not say the character gains a force bonus of double their force. Wedge says that the entire unit's force is doubled.
Now according to the 20F rules, this statement has been made:
"Changes in total Force of a unit or army which are not due to changes to the Force of its component cards (for example, because of a Follower being destroyed) do not count as Force bonuses or penalties."
Wedge changes the force of the entire unit, and thus my question stands, can Wedge be Courage Beyond Questioned?
A: Wedge is absolutely a force bonus, but we can see where the wording lacked clarity and conflicted with 0.6 (which is there to deal with attachment destruction, Reserve, etc). Wedge's Oracle wording has been reverted to its CE printing to give absolute clarity to how it works. Jon Palmer, "Clarification of Wedge+Courage Beyond - Tech Errata", 27 Jul 2015 - Q: Hi,
If i played a Wedge, can i negate my personality's destruction with Ward of Air?
Same question, Ward of Air vs Way of the Crab.
Ward of Air: http://imperialassembly.com/oracle/#cardid=9893,#hashid=af78c21ad80cdb5eb492503eb9fdbff7,#cardcount=0
Wedge: http://imperialassembly.com/oracle/#cardid=9281,#hashid=11d66ede12a1ca69336a3a3109a2c5bb,#cardcount=0
Way of the Crab: http://imperialassembly.com/oracle/#cardid=11856,#hashid=13f1140cfb16fb39f5509e7b1ce76840,#cardcount=0
Thanks!
A: With both Wedge and Way of the Crab, the Personality is being destroyed by a Battle action, so Ward of Air can be triggered. Alex Jones, "Ward of Air and Wedge or Way of the Crab", 21 Jul 2015 - Q: Ichigo Sensei
Keywords Crab • Dragon • Lion • Scorpion • Unicorn Text After an enemy card is destroyed during a battle, if the destruction was not from another player's card effect, gain 1 Honor.
1)"another player's card effect" that means my card effect will not give me honor?
2)Battle Resolution will gain you honor since it is rule book effect? if 3 cards are destroyed during resolution I gain 9 honor instead of 6 honor?
3)if my opponent use Desperate sacrifice or redirecting rage will gain me honor? cause its their card effect?
4)If opponent has a personality with 2 attachment and is killed during battle with fear + okura or duel, i gain 2 honor? cause the attachment were destroyed by rule book effect?
5)Ring of fire and Wedge doesnt count cause it is after battle?
A: Any destruction, OTHER than one that comes from another player's card effect, triggers the honor.
1. Your card effects will give you the honor. 2. Battle resolution will give you the honor. 3. Your opponent's Desperate Sacrifice or Redirecting Rage will not give you the honor, as they are another player's card effect. 4. The rulebook destruction of attachments due to a Personality's destruction will give you the honor for the attachments. Jon Palmer, "Ichigo Sensei Clarification", 20 Jun 2015 - Q: Wedge: Battle: Target your Personality. You may not use abilities on cards in his unit or target them with actions. Before this battle resolves, double his unit's Force. Destroy him after the battle ends.
Courage Beyond Question: Interrupt: Negate all Force bonuses and penalties from the action.
question 1) will wedge force bonus still be negated, even if wedge bonus is a delayed effect? or will the interrupt do nothing since its a delayed effect?
2) will the wedge target still dies since he didnt double his force?
A: Courage Beyond Question will negate force bonuses from an action even if those bonuses are delayed as in the case of Wedge.
The Wedged Personality's destruction and the force bonus are unrelated, and therefore even if the bonus is negated, the Personality will still be destroyed. Jon Palmer, "wedge + courage beyond question", 17 Apr 2015 - Q: Does Breaking the Rhythm negate wedges force bump?
A: No. Breaking the Rhythm only negates current Force bonuses (or penalties), and the Force bonus created by Wedge is a delayed effect which hasn't been applied yet. Alex Jones, "Breaking the Rhythm and Wedge", 31 Mar 2015 - Q: Does Feign Death work with Way of the Crab and Wedge?
A: It will not, because Feign Death's effect only triggers of the Personality is destroyed during the action's resolution. Actions with delayed destruction, such as Way of the Crab and Wedge, will not later trigger it. Jon Palmer, "Feign Death", 5 Mar 2015 - Q: Can I use Strength of the Bamboo after I have targeted my Hero with Wedge?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Wedge+Strength of the Bamboo", 22 Nov 2009 - Q: Can a personality who was targeted by Wedge be destroyed with another player’s Flanked by Nightmares strategy?
A: No.
Flanked by Nightmares has the enemy leader target his own Personality, but Wedge prohibits him from targeting his Personality with actions (any actions; it doesn't just specify his own). Therefore, he can't do it. Brook Cunningham, "Flanked by Nightmares and Wedge", 5 Jul 2009 - Q: I believe that this strategy can be played (because its targeting is not the part of required targeting step).
A: Yes, that's true for the reason you give. But if the Wedge'd Personality is the only one in the enemy leader's army, Flanked's effects will simply fail. Brook Cunningham, "Flanked by Nightmares and Wedge", 5 Jul 2009 - Q: Shikibu + Wedge= If I have another personality with Shikibu at RESOLUTION can I remove him from play and not destroy Shikibu?
A: By the time Wedge is destroying Shikibu no Oni, units in the battle have gone home (http://rules.l5r.com/Battles#Final_Steps), so anything in home works. Zen Faulkes, "Shikibu no Oni Exp. questions", 21 May 2009 - Q: Will Shameful Injury stop the doubling from Wedge?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Wedge and Shameful injury?", 17 Sep 2008 - Q: If i am attacking 2 separate provinces, and i Wedge my guy at one battlefield and crunch, he dies, but at the second battlefield, can i use Will to bring him into play in my current army even though he's been through a battle resolution?
A: Entering play is not moving. Yes.
Note: Entering play is subject to the Rule of Presence and doesn't get the exception that movement does. Zen Faulkes, "Wedge and will verse battle resolution", 23 Aug 2008 - Q: Can i react with courage in death (in order to use the Force bonus, not the anti-kill) after one of my personality is destroyed by Wedge?
A: No. Wedge specifically says it destroys after battle, Courage in Death is triggered during battle. Zen Faulkes, "Wedge and Courage in Death", 8 Mar 2008 - Q: Explored Territory + Wedge: Can I safe my personality targeted with wedge using this terrain?
A: See viewtopic.php?f=59&t=61792.
No.
Wedge destroys "after the battle ends". Terrains are destroyed before that. See http://rules.l5r.com/Battles#After_Resolution Zen Faulkes, "wedge+explored territory", 31 Dec 2007 - Q: Okay, per Adeiko ruling I began to question about Assigning blame, wedge and seiden sanzo:
Assigning blame: Political Reaction: After one of your Personalities is destroyed, if you control a Courtier: Dishonor a target Personality. His controller loses 3 Honor; this loss can be negated but not reduced.
Seiden Sanzo: Limited: Target a Personality you own and control. He gains Cavalry and +3F. Destroy him at the start of your next Dynasty Phase.
Wedge: Battle: Target one of your Personalities. You can not target cards in his unit with actions until after this battle ends. After this battle’s Resolution Segment begins, double his Force and the Force of each Follower in his unit. Destroy him after the battle ends.
The question is: With the new ruling about not being able to react to "delayed" effects, can I still react to a Wedge with Assigning blame?
A: Yes. Adeiko is worded much differently than Assigning Blame. Chris Fuchs, "Reaction to "effects" that are delayed", 13 Sep 2007 - Q: If I use Wedge on one of my Hero personalities and when my opponent kills him I react to his death with Astonishing Resilience, would my personalities force still double even while he is in the discard pile?
A: Yes. (Fixed.) Zen Faulkes, "Wedge and Astonishing Resilience", 23 Aug 2007 - Q: Wedge - "Battle: Target one of your Personalities. You can not target cards in his unit with actions until after this battle ends. After this battle’s Resolution Segment begins, double his Force and the Force of each Follower in his unit. Destroy him after the battle ends."
Ordered Retreat - "Battle: Move home one or more target Personalities in your army. You may straighten a number of your units up to the number of Personalities you moved home."
Can I use the effect from Ordered Retreat to unbow a bowed personality that was previously targeted with Wedge?
A: Yes, assuming you sent someone home. The send-home targets. The straightening effect does not tell you to target anyone. Martin Lund, "Ordered Retreat + Wedge", 22 Aug 2007 - Q: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=59976
Does it matter that the wording on Death After Life is "during battle" and not "during a battle?" In other words, can "during battle" be taken to means during the Combat Segment rather than during a specifc battle in that segment?
Does this haev any relevance here: From the Comprehensive Rulings - Effects that occur between phases or segments resolve in the order of the phase or segment they refer to. E.g., an effect occuring "after the Events Phase" resolves before one occuring "before the Action Phase." [ZF, 10 August 2001] * Similarly, effects such as "after" or "before" a turn (e.g., Suitengu's Surge) count as happening in the turns they reference. Thus, once per turn limitations must still be obeyed. [ML, 5 January 2005]
Would something happening "after the battle ends" actually be happening during that battle?
Thanks!
A: No.
The difference in wording does not matter. If the wording said, "at a battlefield," and your unit was not sent home as an attacking or allied unit, then it might work.
Neither ruling is applicable.
The first specifies that triggers from "after the Combat Segment" always go before triggers, "before the Resolution Segment."
The second specifically applies to Game Turns, not Phases or Segments. Martin Lund, "Death After Life + Wedge (2)", 2 Aug 2007 - Q: I am resolving my first battle. I Wedge a unit. I respond to the destruction from Wedge with Death after Life. Is my current army at battle 1 or battle 2? Does anything change if I am resolving my last battle when I do this?
Thanks!
A: Wedged doesn't kill your unit "during a battle." It kills them "after the battle ends" (card text).
That's not a valid trigger for Death After Life, if I read the card correctly. Martin Lund, "Death After Life + Wedge", 2 Aug 2007 - Q: In reference to this, Hida Utaemon asked : "If i wedge hida yaheiko, can she negate the destruction of wedge?" and he was answered "Yes - unless they've changed the wording on Wedge since I last checked. Destruction due to Wedge is a 'card effect' and would be a valid trigger for her ability."
Just to be sure: if I read the comprehensive rules correctly, assuming no other card is played and no other effect takes place, isn't Hida Yaheiko normally bowed when Wedge destroys her, which prevents her from using her reaction to negate her destruction ?
A: She'll be bowed if attacking, but not if defending. Zen Faulkes, "Re: Hida Yaheiko and Wedge", 9 Jul 2007 - Q: If I'm playing Halls of the Damned and bow a human personality I own to take control of Hida Sozen Exp. 1 and use Wedge on him, do him die at the end o battle?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Hida Sozen Exp. + Halls of the Damned + Wedge", 4 Jun 2007 - Q: Can you use Wedge and Pointless Sacrifice together to destroy a Province, or does Wedge destroy your unit before Pointless Sacrifice can be activated?
Wedge
Quote:
Battle: Target one of your units in this battle. You cannot target that unit or cards in it with actions until after the battle ends. Destroy the unit when the battle ends. If the unit is still in this army at the beginning of the Resolution Segment, double the Force of the Personality and each Follower in the unit.
Pointless Sacrifice
Quote:
Reaction: Play as the Attacker after your army wins a battle against a defending army to destroy that Province if your army's total Force is greater than the Province's strength.
A: "When the battle ends" is distinctly after the battle resolves. All army-killing and province-destruction happens before wedge destroys anything. Pointless Sacrifice is played during the resolution, so it is played before Wedge destroys your unit. Martin Lund, "Using Wedge and Pointless Sacrifice?", 17 Mar 2005 - Q: [Jade]

I’ve seen Utter Defeat had an erratum in SE of “being destroyed at ballte resolution.
Just checking this was not like that under Jade rules, wasn’t it?
In Jade you could Utter Defeat a character being killed say by a ranged attack during battle. Am I right? Also, I cannot Utter Defeat a character dead by Wedge (same [Jade] context), correct? As Wedge kills after the battle not at battle and even though if it were in battle I couldn ‘t target. Where as I can Feing Death (since the 2004 ruling won’t apply)
A: The SL printing says "by a duel or battle". It does not say "during battle" but "by a... battle", therefore it seems that the original could also only react to Battle Resolution, which is the only time a "battle" itself is destroying the Personality. The SE MRP is clearer, but I do not think it is a "change". Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 26 Oct 2026 - Q: @Brook Cunningham Can you Feign Death a Wedge? I doubt it, but just wondering.
A: Saaam is right. The Reaction version of Feign could resurrect someone who Wedge destroyed in all previous arcs by reacting at the time of destruction, but the Interrupt version specifically looks for the destruction to have occurred during the action's resolution and won't save anyone who is destroyed by delayed destruction later on.
