- Erratum: Reads, “Winter Until the end of the game, after each time an attack is declared, each player targets two of his unbowed Personalities with a Gold Cost equal to or less than his Stronghold’s Gold production plus 2. Bow them.” [MRP, Samurai Edition, 25 July 2007] Comprehensive Rules, Samurai Edition, with specific card rulings, final version, May 2009, p. 170
Rules Q&A
- Q: Desperate Wager Reaction: Before your Dynasty Phase begins: Straighten all your Personalities. Declare an additional Attack Phase. After its Declaration Segment, straighten all the Defender’s Personalities and Followers; this straightening can not be negated. You lose the game at the end of this turn.
Winter Storm Until the end of the game, after each time an attack is declared, each player targets two of his unbowed Personalities with a Gold Cost eqal to or less than his Stronghold's Gold Production plus 2. Bow them.
Question: I am the active player. Winter storm is in effect. My opponent has 2 random spud GC = Stronghold's Gold plus 2 I play desperate wager
What happens A. Desperate Wager creates new attack phase. Desperate Wager straightens defenders. Winter Storm bows two Boxable spuds. B. Desperate Wager creates new attack phase. Winter Storm bows two Boxable spuds. Desperate Wager straightens defenders.
Many thanks
A: Declaration Segment: A. Declare an attack. The player creating this Attack Phase declares an attack. B. Create Battlefields. C. Invite Allies.
Winter Storm triggers after step A of the Declaration Segment. Desperate Wager straightens the Defender's Personalities and Followers after the end of the entire Declaration Segment. So Winter Storm bows, and, later, Desperate Wager straightens. Alex Jones, "Desperate Wager vs Winter Storm", 19 Jun 2008 - Q: Because the printing has changed with Samurai...
Is an attack declared when a player plays Ambush (for effects such as Winter Storm)?
If the Attacker's personality becomes bowed after being targeted but before being assigned, may he still be assigned? Will a card effect instructing a bowed personality to assign always fail?
Thanks!
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Battles#Battles: "Battles created by a card effect that does not create an Attack Phase..." etc.
So if the card says nothing of an Attack Phase, there isn't one. Zen Faulkes, "Ambush", 13 Mar 2008 - Q: Winter Storm says that after an attack is declared each player has to bow two of their personalities right?
But both, Ambush and Heated Discussion doesn't say at any moment that it declares an attack, just that creates that battlefield. My question is: When a personality uses Ambush or Heated Discussion while Winter Storm is in play do each player has to bow two of their personalities with gold cost equal stronghold gold production + 2?
If each player has to bow two personalities what will happen on Ambush case if the personality I chose for Ambush will bow due to Winter Storm what will happen? Will he assign to the battlefield even if bowed?
Regarding to Ambush and Heated Discussion, is it considered an attack phase? Can I use Retribution after the battle ends?
A: Neither Heated Discussion nor Ambush mention anything about an Attack Phase or declaring an Attack. They don't create a new Phase and they don't address any Declaration or Maneuvers Segments. They provide explicit instructions about creating Battlefields and assigning Personalities instead. They only create Combat and Resolution Segments.
Winter Storm and Retribution both completely fail to trigger off of these two cards. Martin Lund, "Winter Storm vs Ambush/Heated Discussion and Retribution", 2 Nov 2007 - Q: Isn't the ruling just issued contrary to this entry in this Comphrensive Rules.
A: No. Martin Lund, "Winter Storm and Kazumasa revisited", 18 Oct 2007 - Q: Resolve
[ADDED 22 September 2007]
1. An action or trait begins to resolve when its sequence of effect activation begins, assuming costs, targeting and conditions have been met. It stops resolving when its sequence of effect activation has ended, even if the application of some effects has been delayed.
A: "It stops resolving when its sequence of effect activation has ended, even if the application of some effects has been delayed."
Things like, "this next time [trigger X] happens, do [effect Y]," or "after each time [trigger A] happens, do [effect B]," are exactly the things that "even if the application of some effects has been delayed," refers to. They've already been activated (introduced to the game) when the Event resolves, but their particular Effects may not have been Triggered yet. Martin Lund, "Winter Storm and Kazumasa revisited", 18 Oct 2007 - Q: Winter Storm Winter Until the end of the game, after each time an attack is declared, each player targets two of his unbowed Personalities with a Gold Cost eqal to or less than his Stronghold's Gold Production plus 2. Bow them.
Kazumasa Badger Clan • Samurai • Scout • Mountaineer • Advisor from the Shogun • Unique Reaction: After an action or Event with the Winter or Mountain keyword resolves, even if Kazumasa is bowed: Draw a card. Straighten Kazumasa.
Do I get to draw a card and straighten Kazumasa each time an attack is declared when Winter Storm is in effect?
A: No. "Produces an Effect," is not the same thing as "Resolves." The Event resolves one time (barring outside effects) during the Events Phase. Any On-Going Effects, Delayed Effects, Continuous Effects, Triggered Effects, or effects of the Event's Activated Abilities that may hang around after the fact don't change that. Martin Lund, "Winter Storm and Kazumasa", 18 Oct 2007 - Q: D. Apply any delayed effects that resolved previously and are timed to the trigger (such as, “After the next time this turn he assigns…”) The active player decides the order in which more than one of these effects apply. If different sources each give multiple delayed effects to the same trigger, the active player decides which source's delayed effects apply first, but multiple delayed effects from the same source all happen before delayed effects from the next source happen.
Example: If two delayed effects on the same personality say "After he assigns, dishonor him, and his controller loses 2 Honor," the effects apply as follows: dishonor him, lose 2 Honor, dishonor him again, lose 2 Honor.
E. Apply any triggered traits on cards. The active player decides the order in which more than one of these effects apply.
A: Ikoma Noda has a Triggered Trait: "After an attack is declared: Straighten Noda."
Winter Storm has a Delayed Effect: "after each time an attack is declared, each player targets two of his unbowed Personalities with a Gold Cost eqal to or less than his Stronghold's Gold Production plus 2. Bow them."
Winter Storm's Delayed Effect always gets resolved before Ikoma Noda'a Triggered Trait. Martin Lund, "Ikoma Noda and Winter Storm", 17 Oct 2007 - Q: If a player has only one unbowed Personalty that fits the criteria of Winter Storm does that Personality have to be bowed?
A: Yes. You have to fulfill as much of the effect as you can. Comprehensive Rules, Special Wording: "If the presence of an exact number of things is being checked for, this will be noted by language such as "exactly two' or 'only one,' or by mentioning two or more specific numbers such as "zero or one.'"
