Rulings
- Erratum: Reads, "Wounded in Battle 0G 2FV Battle: A target Personality in this battle has -2C until the end of the turn. If the Personality is reduced below 1C and is a Samurai, he or she does not die unless his or her Chi is still below 1 at the end of the Resolution Segment. Only one Wounded in Battle can be played on a Personality per turn." [MRP, Fire & Shadow] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 40
- A 3C+ Samurai survives until the end of battle if Wounded in Battle is used first, then some other action reduces his Chi below 1.[DW] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 40
- Clarified: target won't die if he's a samurai and his chi is above 0 at the end of resolution. Text Change & Errata List, February 15, 2000, p. 5
- A samurai does not die if his Chi is reduced to 0 but is raised before the battle ends. [DW, l5rinfo, 8/30/96] Accumulated Rulings, April 22, 1998, p. 36
- Erratum: Reads, "Wounded in Battle 0G 2FV Battle: Target a Personality who has not been targeted by a Wounded in Battle this turn. Until the battle ends, if he is a Samurai, he does not die from having 0 Chi. Give him –2C." Rules Q&A
- Q: I am sure this was covered earlier, but I can't find the ruling.
If my enemy has a 3C (Samurai) personality and play Wounded in Battle, and then a Bloodstrike or something... does he die after the resolution of this battle.
A: The answer is in the MRP of Wounded in Battle.
"Battle: Give a Personality in this battle -2C. If the Personality is a Samurai, he does not die from having 0 Chi during this battle."
The samurai is totally protected from dying due to having 0 Chi for the entire rest of the battle. When the battle ends, so does this protection. If his Chi is 0 then (or later), he dies. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 24 March 2004", 26 Mar 2004 - Q: And for that matter, how long do effects like Wounded in Battle, Uncertainty etc. last?
A: Until the turn ends unless specified otherwise on the card. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 24 March 2004", 26 Mar 2004 - Q: - If I can legally play that second Wounded in Battle targeting Seruma, can Danjuro bow to redirect it to himself again?
A: No, because you could not have played it on him in the first place. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 1 March 2004", 2 Mar 2004 - Q: c. Wounded in Battle on Ariteko
A: Yes. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for November 27th", 27 Nov 2000 - Q: If a Samurai with 1 or 2 Chi is targeted by Wounded in Battle, then subsequently in the same battle receives a bonus to Chi from another effect, such as Destiny Has No Secrets or being in a battle resolution with an active Today We Die effect, would they die?
My reading is no, since the "Chi Death Rule" is a continuous effect applied by the rulebook, and the bonuses would raise the Samurai's Chi back above 0. The case of Today We Die is based on the order of battle (Ivory Comprehensive Rules, p. 39), with resolution (step iii) coming before the battle ends (step iv), and therefore a token added "after resolution" being added before "the battle ends".
Do I have these correct?
A: Your reading is correct. Once the Chi Death prevention effect wears off, if the Personality has a Chi value of 1 or more, they will not die. Ben Higgins, "Wounded in Battle, samurai, and bonuses to Chi", 2 Dec 2014 - Q: I have a 2 chi non-samurai shugenja with an attached ward of air. He is targeted by wounded in battle. Can I negate wounded in battle using ward of air?
A: Ward of Air will not negate destruction from having 0 Chi, as it is a Rulebook effect doing the destruction, not an effect of Wounded in Battle.
Note, this was not the case back in Emperor Edition, but in Ivory Edition, Chi Death is now only from the Rulebook, and nto from the effect that last gave a penalty to a Personality's Chi. Ben Higgins, "Ward of Air vs Wounded in Battle", 30 Jun 2014 - Q: (H)ow would Bayushi Tomo interact with Wounded in Battle(?)
A: The ability can be used until you hit 0C. Then you can't use it any more, because you cannot make Chi drop the required -1C to pay the cost. It will be rounded up to 0. Zen Faulkes, "Bayushi Tomo", 26 Jul 2008 - Q: If I play Wounded in Battle on one of my own people (not a samurai) and this -2C effect destroys him, will this count for the Ring of the Phoenix?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Ring of the Phoenix and Wounded in Battle", 30 Jan 2008 - Q: To get a stat's current value at any given time, do steps A through C, below:
A: Apply all current bonuses and penalties.
B: If the total is below 0, treat it as 0. (Does not apply to Family Honor, Honor Requirements, and stats with a + or – sign such as an Item’s Force and Chi stats.)
A: Note that the Obsidian Dragon's effect does not impose a minimum value on Ayano's Chi. It only limits its own effect, as noted here. Martin Lund, "Obsidian Dragon plus Wounded in Battle", 27 Jul 2007 - Q: Restrictions on single effects such as “This cannot raise his Force above 3” do not impose a maximum or minimum on other effects.
A: So you've got Doji Ayano with -1 Chi, treated as 0 Chi, who can't die due to having 0 Chi.
After the Resolution Segment, things will be different. Unless something very strange happens, either Ayano or the Obsidian Dragon will be sent home, and the penalty she was receiving with end. She'll be at 2 Chi (4 Printed - 2 from Wounded in Battle). Then the battle will be considered to have ended and her protection from dying from 0 Chi will expire, as per the card text on Wounded in Battle. Of course, she does not have 0 Chi anymore, so she won't have to worry about that.
Now if she hadn't been a Samurai, Wounded in Battle wouldn't have protected her during the Battle, and she'd have died immediately after receiving the -2 Chi from Wounded in Battle. Martin Lund, "Obsidian Dragon plus Wounded in Battle", 27 Jul 2007
