Rules Q&A
- Q: I did some searching on Tanemono but couldn't find anything relating to this.
What happens if Tanemono uses his ability to switch his force and chi then attaches an item which gives him a Force Bonus?
Example: I use Tanemono's ability to make him now 6F/1C, my next action I attach a Wyrmbone Katana (+4F/+1C) to Tanemono, bringing him up to 10F/2C. At the end of the turn, when the ability wears off, is Tanemono's stats:
A. 2F/10Chi (1F/6C base, then Wyrmbone's F/C bonus is reversed). B. 5F/7C (standard set up, as if I attached the weapon when his ability is off).
Thanks.
A: The key to this is to remember that "switching" force and chi is simply giving a bonus and penalty to bring them to the new stats.
Tanemono starts out 1/6 Her ability is used, giving her +5F and -5C. She is now (1+5)=6F/(6-5)=1C You give her Wyrmbone Katana. She is now (1+5+4)=10F/(6-5+1)=2C At the end of the turn, the +5F/-5C effect wears off. She is now (1+4)=5F/(6+1)=7C. Jon Palmer, "Tanemono and Items", 15 Apr 2013 - Q: The Question. If multiple battles take place at the same province at different times during a given turn is it considered to be a new Battlefield?
A: Each different Attack Phase creates its own battlefields at its beginning and removes them at its end. Though they may be at the same provinces, each battlefield is a new, unique entity when created. Brook Cunningham, "Wyrmbone Katana and Aramasu's Vigilance", 24 Oct 2012 - Q: If I have Fukuzo - EXP in play and I attach a Wyrmbone Katana to him, and I RFG Kanpeki and copy his Kensai keyword, I can attach another Wyrmbone to him. Now, if I use Fukuzo's ability again to rfg a personality and NOT copy the kensai trait, does he still get to keep the two Wyrmbone Katana on him or does one just get discarded?
A: Checking legality of attachments, like Followers' Honor Requirements or the number of Weapons a Personality may attach, is done only at the time of attaching, not constantly. Nothing will happen to Fukuzo's second Weapon should he lose "Kensai" after legally attaching it. Brook Cunningham, "Fukuzo - EXP Questions", 9 Apr 2012 - Q: Because of the order of effects on the card, can one use Temple of the Waystation's overlay and transfer effect to result in a game state where a non-henshin has two weapons because the target of the overlay was a kensai with a weapon? Or is the second weapon discarded?
Relevant text: Waystation of the Path Reaction: After another player's action targets your performing Henshin, target another of your Personalities: The Henshin is reborn. Transfer his attachments and tokens to the other Personality. The action's effects that would destroy your Henshin instead overlay him onto the Personality.
Kensai: May attach two Weapons. (Rulebook glossary)
The Game state: Personality A: Asako Yorisada with a Wyrmbone Katana. Personality B: Any Kensai with a 2nd Wyrmbone already attached.
If Yorisada is targeted with a kill action and I use the stronghold targeting the Kensai, the stronghold transfers the weapon. Then the stronghold overlays Yorisada over the kensai. As the personality now lacks the Kensai trait, but has two weapons, do both Wyrmbone Katanas remain in play?
A: Yes, if a card has the ability to have two weapons and then loses that ability due to another effect, he does not have to discard one of the already attached weapons. Jon Palmer, "Temple of the Waystation + Kensai", 8 Feb 2012 - Q: So cards like wyrmbone katana needs to be oracled to absent? Or you can't move back in? OBH rules
A: "Absent" was introduced in Ivory, and some Oracle wordings are still only current to Emperor. Time and life and the IP sale got away from me, but perhaps one day.
Yes, Wyrmbone's 2nd ability would be Absent with a fully Ivory / 20F update. OBH has a stopgap Rule for that in the meanwhile, I believe, preserving Emperor exceptions to Presence. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 20 Jun 2024
