- Is distinct from Daidoji Hachi. (Card text) Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 132
- Q: Gold Edition has a card called Yasuki Hachi who "counts as Daidoji Hachi for deck construction". Yet, Daidoji Hachi is, himself, a Gold-legal card. Was Yasuki Hachi supposed to be the "Soul of Daidoji Hachi", or is he the Most Recent Printing of Daidoji Hachi? A: Neither! They are two distinct cards and are both played as written in all tournament formats. Players using the Iron Fortress of the Daidoji Stronghold may use Daidoji Hachi to benefit from his Daidoji family name, even in Strict Gold games. Experienced versions of Daidoji and Yasuki Hachi may only be overlayed on top of identically-named less-Experienced cards. Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, May 21, 2003, p. 7
Rules Q&A
- Q: To All, Sorry if this is a dead issue, but I never really thought much about it until someone brought it up. Can DAIDOJI Hachi be brought into play by a Crane player using the Iron Fortress of the Daidoji in a strict gold format tournament?
A: Yes. Daidoji Hachi and Yasuki Hachi are distinct cards and are both played as written in both Open and Gold formats. Jeff Alexander, "post for 3 September 2002", 4 Sep 2002 - Q: I have a question about abilities gained by overlaid personalities from their less experienced version. If i have, for example, Yasuki Hachi in play and overlay Yasuki Hachi exp over him he gains the "Reaction: Once per turn, when Hachi wins a duel, straighten your Stronghold." abilitiy. now, if my opponent plays Lady Moon's Curse, which states: "Kiho Open: Bow one of your Shugenja or Monks to permanently remove all abilities from a Personality that are not printed on that Personality." does my Hachi exp lose the reaction abilitiy granted from his non-exp version since that ability isn't printed on the Hachi exp card?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 16 August 2002", 17 Aug 2002 - Q: This is a question about the crane deck, with the stronglod of the daidoji that reduce the honor requirements of the daidojis by 5. The rulebook says , if the same card is printed two times (diferent expansions...) the last one is that aply to rule them.(that happends with hachi)
A: That did not happen with Hachi. Yasuki and Daidoji Hachi are two different cards. You simply cannot have more than three of them, combined, in your deck. Both are played exactly as written. Jeff Alexander, "post for 15 April 2002", 16 Apr 2002 - Q: The object of this question is: can i reduce the honor requirement of Yasuki Hachi(the last card printed) with the strongold of the daidoji?
A: No. Jeff Alexander, "post for 15 April 2002", 16 Apr 2002 - Q: 1. Yasuki Hachi (Gold Edition) - Is there a reason that his card says 'Counts as Daidoji Hachi for deck construction' rather than 'Soul of Daidoji Hachi'?
A: Y. Hachi was not the "Soul of" D. Hachi because he was the same person, not someone one or two generations removed. Yet we did not want to MRP any changes onto any existing Personality cards purely for storyline reasons -- we did that at the start of the Jade arc and made a lot of people who didn't care about storyline games upset. You're seeing the best way we could work around both limitations. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 April 2002 pt. 2", 8 Apr 2002 - Q: 12. Family Tactics (Name a family. Each personality in your army that is a member of that family gains +1F) - When using people that are Soul Of someone (For example, Yasuki Hachi / Daidoji Hachi mentioned earlier), are the names interchangeable since they are really the same person, or are the rules in Rokugan so strict that they only care for their current name?
A: If you're playing in a Strict Gold Storyline tournament, your older Personalities are considered proxies of the "Soul of..." versions in Gold Edition/Dark Allies and are played by the exact text of the newer version, including new family name.
In all other games, you play everyone by what's written on the card. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 April 2002 pt. 2", 8 Apr 2002 - Q: Just a couple quick questions. We know that XP Yasuki Hachi (An Oni's Fury) can be overlayed over Yasuki Hachi (Gold Edition), and we know that Yasuki Hachi (Gold Edition) counts as Daidoji Hachi (Spirit Wars).
A: They count against each other for deck construction. That's it. Jeff Alexander, "post for 1 March 2002", 2 Mar 2002 - Q: Hello all, I had a quick question about a crane personality. I just started playing again in gold and I am not sure what the rules are on the new and old stuff so I will just ask to see if its been addressed. Daidoji Hachi from the spirit wars has the gold legal mark but he is Yasuki Hachi in gold, all of his traits and costs are the same the name is the only change...and I was wondering...seeing it has the gold legal mark am I able to use the Daidoji version in gold legal as Daidoji not Yasuki?
A: Yes.
Yasuki Hachi is NOT a reprinting of Daidoji Hachi and is NOT the "Soul of Daidoji Hachi". They are two separate cards and both get played exactly as written in all tournament formats. Jeff Alexander, "post for 28 February 2002", 1 Mar 2002 - Q: If I have a 2/4 personality (Yasuki Hachi for instance), and 2 Fortress of The Dragonfly in play, Yasuki is 2/6, ok... but what happens if I use Energy Transference on him ? Does he become 6/2, or 4/4 ?
A: He was a 2/6, so he'll become a 6/2. [AOF rulebook pp. 32, 42] Jeff Alexander, "post for 6 February 2002", 7 Feb 2002 - Q: Well, none, since Hachi exp says "any", not "another". So it's really :
- straighten or bow a holding controlled by any player - straighten or bow a stronghold controlled by any player
A: Absolutely correct. Jeff Alexander, "post for 26 November 2001", 27 Nov 2001 - Q: Yasuki Hachi has the Imperial Standard attached, and then gets hit with Retirement. He will forever have 0(-1) Force until he is given a permanent raise to his force-is this right?
A: It doesn't have to be permanent. For example, a Charge will make him 1F (2 + 1 - 4 + 2) until the end of the turn, then it's back to 0F(-1). Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 November 2001", 19 Nov 2001 - Q: Pretty sure I can't, but just to make sure: Can I use the older printing of Yasuki Hachi (Daidoji Hachi) and get the negative 5 honor requirement with the Iron Fortress of the Daidoji?
I'm thinking that the new printing of "Yasuki" Hachi is MRP, so it wouldn't help...but thought I'd ask to confirm it.
A: Yasuki Hachi is neither an MRP of Daidoji Hachi nor the "Soul of Daidoji Hachi". They are played as printed in all tournament formats. Jeff Alexander, "post for 29 October 2001", 30 Oct 2001 - Q: Can I use the older printing of Yasuki Hachi (Daidoji Hachi) and get the negative 5 honor requirement with the Iron Fortress of the Daidoji?
A: Rules Archive, Yasuki Hachi: "Is distinct from Daidoji Hachi. (Card text)". Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 29 October 2001", 30 Oct 2001 - Q: 4. Can I play Daidoji Hachi as Daidoji Hachi or must I play him as Yasuki Hachi?
A: Daidoji Hachi and Yasuki Hachi are both Gold-legal cards. The "Soul of..." proxy rule does not apply. You MUST play them as written. You may not have more than three Hachis in your deck, total, by the wording on Yasuki Hachi. Yasuki Hachi does not get the Honor Requirement reduction from the Iron Fortress.
