Rules Q&A
- Q: Yasuki Tsujiken 3F/4C -(HR)/10(GC)/0(PH) Crab Clan • Courtier • Crime Boss • Merchant Reaction: After Tsujiken enters play, target a Holding: Until Tsujiken leaves play, after each time its controller bows it, he loses 1 Honor. Open: Bow Tsujiken and target a Holding: Straighten it. You may bow it if its base Gold Cost is 4 or lower.
Yoritomo Tarao 4F/3C -(HR)/8(GC)/1(PH) Mantis Clan • Samurai • Extortionist • Magistrate • Naval Open: Pay 2 Gold: Choose a player. He targets one of his unbowed Personalities or Holdings or a card in his hand. If the targeted card is in his hand, discard it. Otherwise, bow it.
ok, back again...this time i have a question about Tsujiken's Reaction and Tarao's Open action... if i target a holding with Tsujiken's Reaction and my opponent decides to target that seem holding when i target my opponent with Tarao's Open action, do they lose the honor becasue they chose that holding to bow (and it's technically the controller bowing the holding because of their choice), or is it me bowing the holding so they don't lose the honor? Thanks in advance.
A: EDIT: After discussion, this ruling is reversed. Since Tarao's ability causes the holding to become bowed, he is the source of the bowing, rather than the targeted player. Therefore, Tsujiken's honor loss will not trigger. Jon Palmer, "Yasuki Tsujiken & Yoritomo Tarao", 22 Jul 2012 - Q: Hi, Was wondering if the effects on Tsujiken could straighten and then bow a holding with 4 or lower gold cost?
Open: Bow Tsujiken and target a Holding: Straighten it. You may bow it if its base Gold Cost is 4 or lower.
Thanks!
A: Yes, you are correct. Since you resolve effects in order, if Tsijuken targeted a holding with cost 4 or lower, you may straighten it, then bow it. Jon Palmer, "Yasuki Tsujiken", 15 Feb 2012 - Q: Two questions about Shiro Chugo's Reaction and the interaction with Scars of War and Yasuki Tsujiken.
If I play a Scars of War on a holding can my opponent react with Shiro Chugo to reduce the honour loss when the holding is bowed by 2? If not, can he use the react later when the holding is bowed?
Same question about Yasuki Tsujiken's reaction and Shiro Chugo's reaction.
The way I see it there are these options: A) Shiro Chugo can be used when the action is played, reducing all future honour losses by 2. B) Shiro Chugo can be used when bowing a holding with one of the effects (However in this case I wonder what the trigger for Shrio Chugo is) C) Shiro Chugo can not be used against either card.
Shiro Chugo: Political Reaction: Before an action's resolution, choose your performing unbowed Courtier: Reduce any Honor gain or loss from the action's effects by 2.
Scars of War: Limited: Bow your performing Courtier and target a Holding: Until the game ends, after each time it bows or an ability on it resolves, its controller loses 1 Honor.
Yasuki Tsujiken: Reaction: After Tsujiken enters play, target a Holding: Until Tsujiken leaves play, after each time its controller bows it, he loses 1 Honor. Open: Bow Tsujiken and target a Holding: Straighten it. You may bow it if its base Gold Cost is 4 or lower.
A: Answer:
D) Shiro Chugo can only be be used when the action is taken, right before its effects resolve (per Shiro Chugo's wording). And, like all actions without a stated duration, its reduction effect has a default duration of "until the turn ends". So, if you React with Shiro Chugo to the action, and then bow the Holding some time between when the action is taken and the end of THAT TURN, then THAT instance of the Honor loss will be reduced. Any time past that point, after you bow the Holding, the Honor loss will be its normal amount. Brook Cunningham, "Shiro Chugo and "delayed" honour losses", 14 Feb 2012 - Q: Say Yasuki Tsujiken has targeted one of my Holdings with his entering play Reaction (Reaction: After Tsujiken enters play, target a Holding: Until Tsujiken leaves play, after each time its controller bows it, he loses 1 Honor.). If I then later use that targeted holding to pay for a person, what exactly is the timing of the honor loss? If it drops me below a Personality's HR, would he then become more expensive, or do I dodge the bullet and am able to buy him for cheaper?
A: Under the process for bringing Personalities into play, honor requirements are only checked once, before any holdings are bowed. Therefore if bowing a holding drops you below a Personality's honor requirement you will not need to pay extra gold. Jon Palmer, "Yasuki Tsujiken and Honor Requirements", 9 Feb 2012 - Q: (I)f my opponent buys Tsujiken and targets one of my holdings with the entering play react and then uses Tsujiken's Open ability on my turn targeting the same holding, does that trigger the honor loss?
A: No, because your opponent is not the holding's controller. A card is controlled by the person who brought it into play (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Physically_mark ... rd_control). And while normally only the controller can bow a card, being able to do so because of card text doesn't automatically make your opponent the controller. Zen Faulkes, "Yasuki Tsujiken, who bows the holding?", 20 Sep 2011 - Q: I am not sure if the portion of the text which states "its controller" is specific to me bowing my own holding to pay a cost or use an ability, or if it just means I control it but it becomes bowed from any source.
A: Specific to you. If it was "any source", it would just say "after each time it bows", rather than, "after each time its controller bows it." Zen Faulkes, "Yasuki Tsujiken, who bows the holding?", 20 Sep 2011
