Rules Q&A
- Q: Hi everybody. Does anyone know what will happen if I egg Yogo and use the battle action with the Egg. Does the Egg be shuffled in the dynasty deck and if it returns it is still Yogo or is it discarded? We had this problem today in our play group and I'm not sure if it was discussed before. Thanks for some help.
A: The Accumulated Rulings know:
"Once played, it: - Is a Personality permanently [DW, netnews, 4/5/96], even if destroyed. [RD, 4/8/96] - Loses its status as a Unique action. [JA, email, 18 November 2003]
If sent back to your Dynasty Deck, it actually goes in, despite being a Fate card. [DW, 14 November 1997] When it appears in a Province, it follows normal requirements and restrictions." (Accumulated Rulings, "The Egg of P'an Ku")
It becomes a Personality when you play it, and will behave just like a Personality, including being reshuffled into your Dynasty Deck. Martin Lund, "Rules for 17 November 2004", 22 Nov 2004 - Q: Re: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=114004
At the risk of receiving a warning: could you explain what in the CR or the wording of the cards makes Chijin' restriction worth differently than Yajinden Sensei's? I realize the ruling has been made but I don't understand the reasoning.
Or if this is an issue of impending errata?
A: No warning for asking for clarification - the reason I put the mod nudge on there is that there's no need to see people comb through the database for seventeen other cards with similar wording and ask "well what about THIS card". It's happened before and it's easier to stop before it progresses.
One specific difference between Chijin and Yajinden Sensei is that Chijin's wording restricts how a cost may be paid, whereas Yajinden Sensei restricts the use of a player ability. Is the wording indistinct enough that, say, a computer program might interpret both the same way? Absolutely. However, there are limits to how far we allow the rules to stretch in these cases. Hidden Defenses never got "even if you control no units at this battle" added to it.
Some other examples of restriction extremes we don't go to:
Expert Archers: "Can only attach to a Samurai." Can I bow it to produce its ranged 3? Nope, it can only attach to a Samurai. Can't do anything else with it.
Counting House: "You may only have one copy of Counting House in play." Well what happens to everything else I have in play when I Recruit it? Does it prevent me from Recruiting anything else going forward? After all, I'm not allowed to have anything but that one copy of Counting House in play.
As I mentioned in the other post, if anything changes that leads to clarification of Yajinden Sensei, we'll let you guys know. Jon Palmer, "Re: Yogo chijin", 5 Jun 2015 - Q: Hi,
We had these cases in a Legacy game this weekend :
When we use the battle action of Yogo XP7, do all the personalities arrive at the same time into play or they arrive one at a time?
Now, I play Yodin Sensei.
1/ I control 5 personalities, my opponent controls 4 personalities, then he put Yogo XP7 into play so he controls 5 personalities too. He uses the battle action of Yogo, how many personalities can he bring into play ? A => Any number respecting condition of the Yogo battle action. B => because he would control too many personalities
2/ I control 1 personality, my opponent control 1 personality, then then he put Yogo XP7 into play so he controls 2 personalities now. He uses the battle action of Yogo, how many personalities can he bring into play ? A => Any number respecting condition of the Yogo battle action. B => None because of Yodin restriction.
3/ I control no personality, my opponent controls Yogo XP7. He uses the battle action of Yogo, how many personalities can he bring into play ? A => Any number respecting condition of the Yogo battle action because Yogo has been shuffle into the dynasty deck so my opponent does not control more personalities than me at the time all his new army arrive into play. B => None because of Yodin restriction.
The Cards : ----------------------- Yodin Sensei - The player (or players) with the most personalities in play cannot bring a Personality into play if he or she has brought a personality into play this turn. ----------------------- Yogo XP7 - Battle: Shuffle Yogo into your deck from the current battle: Search your Provinces and deck for any number of Personalities with a total Gold cost less than Yogo's. Bring them into play in your army, ignoring costs. -----------------------
Thanks in advance, Rémi.
A: In all cases above, Yogo Exp 7 will successfully bring all Personalities his action searches for into play.
http://rules.l5r.com/Older_Card_Rulings_X-Z#Yodin_Sensei: "You may not bring a second Personality into play if the first you bring into play causes you to be tied for "the most" Personalities. [JA, 8 October 2000] However, this will not prevent multiple Personalities entering play simultaneously if you otherwise meet the conditions for bringing one into play. [ML, 08 June 2005]" Brook Cunningham, "Yodin Sensei VS Yogo XP7", 17 Mar 2010 - Q: But are the Scorpions in my deck playable through Yogo's ability at -2 cost, or do I need to count their full gold cost for my total of 15?
A: Count full cost. Zen Faulkes, "Yogo and the Armor of Shoju", 17 Mar 2005 - Q: Yeah, definitely but even with corrupt holdings it's really limiting with only 2 gp But eventually they were like "enjoy the towers of Yogo", which was one of my favorite builds. Soooo I forgive everyone involved Haha
A: In Lotus, Lion may as well have had a 2G SH. There were no worthwhile holdings that cost 3g. Alex Jones, "Oracle of the Void #l5r", 26 Apr 2021 - Q: That was actually the point of reference I was using! I thought maybe they updated the wording. Yogo is still sooo solid
A: Ha, yeah, no. Different sort of thing. Towers of the Yogo was printed both before and after Wasuremono, however the wording stayed the same, though I grant you it certainly wouldn't be beyond L5R's pale to mess with the wording between sets.
