Rulings
- Her action is not legal during a battle unless she is in it. [Reversal, ZF, web, 7 December 2005] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 132
- When she is in the current battle and uses her ability, the targeted player can bow any of his or her personalities, whether they are in the battle or not. [Mouse, 22 April 1997] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 132
Rules Q&A
- Q: My buddy uses a Yogo Asami from home. Since my shugenja is the only unbowed personality in play, she would bow.
Can I turn of fortune to a bowed samurai outside the battle? I meet relevance, since Turn of Fortune targets the shugenja in the battle.
A: The Rules of Relevance does not apply to Reactions.
At any rate, you can't do it against Shosuro Maru, the Diamond Legal personality. She specifically requires the targeting of an UNBOWED personality, and you can not redirect an Action to a target it could not legally be targeted against in the first place.
Asami has less specific wording, but it works out to the same thing. You can only choose an unbowed Personality if you have any unbowed Personalities (as per the rules in the Archive under "decisions"). The other Personalities are not valid targets so long as you control at least one unbowed Personality. Martin Lund, "Rules for 10 July 2004", 13 Jul 2004 - Q: Shosuro Maru
Scorpion Clan Distracter ï Courtier Soul of Yogo Asami Open: Bow Maru and target a player to force that player to target and bow one of his unbowed Personalities.
Unrequited Love
Political Open: Target an unbowed Human Personality during his controllerís Action Phase. His controller may bow the Personality to gain 1 Honor. If he does not, dishonor the Personality and cause his controller to lose Honor equal to the Personalityís printed Personal Honor.
Questions:
1) Can you use Maru to bow an attacking or defending personality if the targeted player has neither units at home nor at other provinces?
A: You may use Maru if either:
She is in the current battle, or
You have someone in the current battle AND the only possible Personalities the other player may target with her action are in the current battle. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 27 Feb. 2004", 28 Feb 2004 - Q: If I am not mistaken u can... bow to get 2 gold, or bow + bow a personality for 4 gold when paying for a personality. Personally for a rare I think it is pretty crap. If u wanna put some cards that are opowerd on the watch list go no further than.
Shosuro Maru Scorpion Clan Distracter . Courtier Soul of Yogo Asami Open: Bow Maru and target a player to force that player to target and bow one of his unbowed Personalities.
A: The Watch List is not simply for strong cards. It is also not open to public suggestion. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 20 Feb. 2004", 21 Feb 2004 - Q: Yogo Asami : Her action is legal during a battle she is not in if all of the targeted player's Personalities are in the current battle. [REVERSAL, JA, 18 April 2001] Just to clarify, soes this mean ALL the players personalities, or all their straight personalities?
A: All the Personalities that can be selected for Asami to bow, which is typically only the straight ones. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 April 2002 pt. 1", 5 Apr 2002 - Q: Can this be used by a personality outside a battle when targeting an opposing personality?
A: The second ability, which does not refer to "opposing" cards, may be used so long as the standard rules of Presence and Relevance are met. Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 March 2002", 19 Mar 2002 - Q: Also, can Yogo Asami use her ability from outside a battle?
A: If and only if the only Personalities she can possibly cause to bow are all in the current battle. Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 March 2002", 19 Mar 2002 - Q: I have a question about one card. It's Yogo Asami. I know that she can use her ability out of a battle in a special case. But ... wich case is this? If all of target player's personalities are in the battle or if all of target player's UNBOWED personalities are in the battle? Did you understand my question?
A: If all of the possible legal targets for her action are at the battle currently being resolved, you can use her regardless of her location. If there are some personalities outside of the current battle, she has to be at the battle to use her action. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for August 22 (Part One)", 22 Aug 2001 - Q: For another, it means that Yogo Asami becomes near-useless, since a player can target one of his or her bowed personalities with the effect.
A: Hardly. You can't bow a bowed Personality. That's wanking in the first degree. Jeff Alexander, "replies to 15-20 July", 26 Jul 2001 - Q: For another, it means that Yogo Asami becomes near-useless, since a player can target one of his or her bowed personalities with the effect. Bah. Rules lawyering. Well, Open's near-dead anyway.
A: Umm...that's not true. When an effect forces you to bow something, you cannot fulfill the requirement by 're-bowing' cards that are already bowed. Bowing can be a cost, a forced change, or the result of an action. In all of those cases, you cannot claim to 'bow' an already bowed personality to skip the normal bowing procedure. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for", 19 Jul 2001 - Q: Can I choose Hida Ishi to bow for Yogo Asami's ability, and then have the bowing negated by Ishi's trait?
A: Yes, indeed!
