Rules Q&A
- Q: If this was already answered, I apologize. I did a search for Eihoko + Location and Eihiko + presence and didn't find what I was looking for.
Eihiko reads: Reaction: After you announce an action: Reduce the Gold Cost of a target card (in play) by 2 until the action ends.
My question is this. In a battle, let's say I wanted to use Yoritomo Tatsuhiko to bow a unit, or a Ruthless Advance, or any other action in a battle basically. Can I use Eihiko's reaction if he is home or at another battelfield to lower the gold cost of an enemy card or does he have to be at the current battelfield. I'm assuming that he has to be at the current battelfield, but I wanted some clarification. Thank you much.
A: Eihiko's ability is a Reaction, and hence the Rule of Location does not apply. Alex Jones, "Yoritomo Eihiko - location question.", 18 Oct 2010 - Q: In regards to viewtopic.php?f=59&t=81657#p1067418
Reinforce the Gates reaction says: Reaction: After a player announces a Battle action before the Defender’s first normal opportunity to act or pass: Its effects do not happen.
According to this: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Abilities_and_a ... _abilities
The announce stage is before payment of costs and even targeting. Thus, if a person has already targeted the card he intends to use Tatsuhiko ability to bow or straighten, it is too late to play the reaction on Reinforce the Gates.
Has something changed?
EDIT: Even if you still must perform required targeting, Yoritomo Tatsuhiko's ability has the text "You may pay Gold equal". Since paying the gold cost is optional, wouldn't you target, choose not pay gold, and then the effects "straighten the unit", would not happen?
A: I am presuming the correct timing.
After Yoritomo Tatsuhiko's action is announced, the defender plays Reinforce the Gates.
It is a perfectly legal choice to target a personality and pay no gold cost to have them straighten. This effect would not happen via the effect of Reinforce the Gates. Dan Jacobson, "clarification on Yoritomo Tatsuhiko", 7 Feb 2010 - Q: The first is the case of Reinforce the Gates being played when Yoritomo Tatsuhiko performs his action navally. I believe the gold would still be payed because it is in the cost block, but could someone please verify this for me?
A: If you're talking about the Reaction on Reinforce the Gates, yes. (Mod nudge: When an strategy card has multiple actions, please say which action. Thanks!) Zen Faulkes, "clarification on Yoritomo Tatsuhiko", 7 Feb 2010 - Q: The second case is if the target is redirected to another unit using Deflection or Chugo Seido. I believe the player using Yoritomo Tatsuhiko's action would get to decide whether or not to pay the cost of the new target after the redirection occurs because the redirection occurs during the cost block. Is this correct?
