Rules Q&A
- Q: I use Your Clan Needs You! to bring my personality into play. After a series of actions, he is the only personality there. I play In The Heat Of Battle on him taking him 8F, enough to destroy the province.
1- Does he stay in play long enough to destroy the province or does Your Clan Needs You! return him to the province first?
2- Re: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=94949&p=1258563&hilit=needs#p1258563
Does In The Heat Of Battle destroy him in province at the end of turn?
3- When is my timing to use Feign Death in response to In The Heat Of Battle's destruction?
Your Clan Needs You! Battle: If any enemy units are at the current battlefield, choose your performing Personality in one of your provinces: Bring him into play at the current battlefield, paying all costs but paying 6 less Gold. After the battle ends, if he is in play, discard all his attachments and put him face up into one of your provinces, face-up, discarding any card there.
In the Heart of Battle Bushido Virtue • Duty Battle/Open: Choose your performing Samurai: Straighten him and give him +3F. Destroy him before this turn ends.
Feign Death Reaction: After the resolution of an action or battle that destroyed a performing Personality you own: Bring him into play (in your home), ignoring costs and Honor Requirement. Bow him. Lose 2 Honor.
Thank you.
A: 1. Your Clan Needs You will not put him back into province until after Battle resolution, so you will take the Province.
2. In the Heart of Battle will destroy him in Province, placing him in your discard pile as a dead Personality.
3. Feign Death will not save you from In the Heart of Battle, as it has not destroyed the Personality as of the action's resolution. This is generally the case with Feign Death and any delayed destruction effects. Jon Palmer, "Your Clan Needs You", 23 Mar 2012 - Q: Hi,
Following that but, not linked to Halls of the Forgotten stronghold. Subject: Your Clan Needs You + Halls of the Forgotten The Glossary entry for Destroy now reads: 1. When a card is destroyed, it enters its appropriate discard pile, or leaves the game if it was a created card. While it remains in the discard pile, it is dead if it is a Personality. See, etc.[/quote] One more question about "Destroy" : As a destroyed personality becomes dead in the discard pile, does it means that Kitsu Katsuko "destroys" Lion Clan personalities with her limited ability?
If Kitsu Katsuko targets a dishonored Lion Clan personality in a discard pile with her ability, the target's state is set to Honorably Dead. Does it count as rehonoring that personality?
Card's text: Kitsu Katsuko: Battle/Open: Target a Lion Clan Personality in a discard pile and your Samurai: The first target becomes honorably dead. Give the second either Tactician or +3F.
Thanks in advance, Regards, Rémi.
A: The Personality targeted by Katsuko becomes dead, but this is not destruction. Destruction of a Personality implies he becomes dead, but the inverse is not true.
If the Personality is dishonourable, Katsuko will rehonour him. Alex Jones, "Kitsu Katsuko", 7 Mar 2012 - Q: Hi,
Following this : A personality can be destroyed while in province. viewtopic.php?f=59&t=96545&p=1275384#p1275384
What happens next ? Does the destroyed personality stay in the province ? I think yes but if not, does the personality become "dead" or "discarded" in the discard pile?
Regards, Rémi.
A: The definitions of Destroy and Dead have been changed slightly, removing the clause "in play".
The Glossary entry for Destroy now reads: 1. When a card is destroyed, it enters its appropriate discard pile, or leaves the game if it was a created card. While it remains in the discard pile, it is dead if it is a Personality. See, etc.
Areas of the Game, Discard Piles now reads: The Dead: Special rules cover Personality cards in the discard pile. A Personality who is destroyed is in the dead state while he remains in the discard pile; the card is turned 90° in the pile, or otherwise set apart from other discarded cards there. This is not bowing.
Thus, a Personality who is destroyed while in the discard pile will become dead, and a Personality who is in a province will go to the discard pile in the dead state; a Personality who is not in the discard pile is never dead. Note that the Personality must have been in play when the effect "Destroy him" was originally activated, as described previously. Alex Jones, "Your Clan Needs You + Halls of the Forgotten", 6 Mar 2012 - Q: I almost feel bad asking this because this seems to be the slipperiest rules area in quite some time. The question is between Waystation of the Path's overlay function and Your Clan needs You putting people back into provinces when the effect is over.
Waystation of the Path: Reaction: After another player's action targets your performing Henshin, target another of your Personalities: The Henshin is reborn. Transfer his attachments and tokens to the other Personality. The action's effects that would destroy your Henshin instead overlay him onto the Personality.
Your Clan Needs You: Battle: If any enemy units are at the current battlefield, choose your performing Personality in one of your provincesL Bring him into play at the current battlefield, paying all costs but paying 6 less gold. After the battle ends, if he is in play, discard all of his attachments and put him into one of your provinces, face-up, discarding any card there.
Version 1 - I have Henshin_A in play at an opposed battle. I use Your Clan Needs you to bring Henshin_B into the battle. Me enemy targets Henshin_A, and using Waystation he is overlaid onto B. After the battle, Henshin_B remembers that he came out of the province and goes back in. THEN WHAT HAPPENS? Does the overlayed personality go back in the province with him, or does it get discarded?
Version 2 - I again have Hanshin_A in play, and bring Henshin_B into the battle with Your Clan Needs You. This time my enemy targets Henshin_B, who overlays onto A. If I am correct with the rulings so far, the guy who overlaid (B) is no longer the same personality that came out of the province, so he would ignore the ongoing effects of YCNY and stay in play. Is this correct?
Thanks,
Ryan
A: Per the rules on overlaying, delayed effects (such as Your Clan Needs You's putting the Personality back into a province) are cleared off of the overlaying Personality, but stick with the overlaid Personality. Also, please remember that the overlaid Personality is removed from the game.
Therefore in example 1, Henshin B (affected by Your Clan Needs You) is overlaid by Henshin A. The Your Clan Needs You effect sticks with the "new" Personality. Henshin B's card is removed from the game, and Henshin A's card goes into a province.
In example 2, the Your Clan Needs You effect ends when Henshin B overlays onto Henshin A. Jon Palmer, "Waystation of the Path vs Your Clan Needs You", 4 Mar 2012 - Q: If the Berserker player is the active player, brings in a berserker with Your Clan Needs You!, and the personality is destroyed but you use Halls of the Forgotten to delay his destruction, what exactly happens? Does he: A. Return to the province and stay there, indestructible and manly, as cards out of play cannot be destroyed? or B. Return to the province, then get destroyed in an unmanly manner, entering the discard pile as a destroyed personality? or C. Alternative conclusion I have not foreseen? In such case, I will prepare my death poem, having failed in my capacity as an honorable daimyo.
Relevant Kolat Edition Text:
Halls of the Forgotten Reaction: After another player's Battle action targets your Berserker: Delay its effects on him until after this battle ends.
A: Both effects are delayed until "after the battle ends," so the active player will decide which occurs first.
Note that, according to Effects in and out of play: Effects that were activated on a card in play, and then delayed, also apply to the card at the delayed point in time, even if it is no longer in play.
Thus, if the active player chooses to apply the delayed effect from "Your Clan Needs You!" first, the Berserker is returned to the province. Then, the effects delayed by Halls of the Forgotten are applied because they were activated when the Berserker was in play: the Berserker in the province is destroyed.
If the active player chooses to apply the delayed destruction effect first, the Berserker is destroyed. Then, the delayed effect from "Your Clan Needs You!" fails to trigger, because its own text requires the Personality to be in play at the time when it would trigger. Alex Jones, "Your Clan Needs You + Halls of the Forgotten", 1 Mar 2012 - Q: I play You Clan Needs You on personality A during a battle and attach a card to him (for example a Weapon with The Spider's Web trait). The battle ends with my side winning and A still alive and equipped. He goes to one of my provinces, but what happens to his attachment?
http://rules.l5r.com/EE_Card_types#Attachments says: When a Personality leaves play, all his attached cards leave play in the same manner as he did.
Since a Fate card cannot be in a province, the rule cannot be applied unless the Fate Hand is considered the equivalent of the provinces for the Dynasty cards. So my question is: is the attachment discarded, or does it return to my hand?
Your Clan Needs You! Battle: If any enemy units are at the current battlefield, choose your performing Personality in one of your provinces: Bring him into play at the current battlefield, paying all costs but paying 6 less Gold. After the battle ends, if he is in play, discard all his attachments and put him face up into one of your provinces, face-up, discarding any card there.
A: At this point, once the Personality returns to the Province you would apply "An attachment that finds itself in play without a Personality is immediately and continually discarded, unless an effect allows this state." Jon Palmer, "Your Clan Needs You and attachments", 21 Feb 2012 - Q: Just to confirm, Your Clan Needs You and the rulebook clan discount stack. We have a dispute over whether or not the 2 gold cost discount stacks with the 6 gold cost reduction.
Your Clan Needs You Battle: If any enemy units are at the current battlefield, choose your performing Personality in one of your provinces: Bring him into play at the current battlefield, paying all costs but paying 6 less Gold. After the battle ends, if he is in play, discard all his attachments and put him face up into one of your provinces, face-up, discarding any card there.
Clan discount: If a Personality has your Clan alignment, at any time you bring him into play, you may pay 2 less Gold for him to enter play. This is known as buying the Personality “with Clan discount.” It is not applied to Personalities who are created during the game (see Created Cards, p. 97).
Do they stack with the rulebook effect of discounting in clan personalities by 2 for a total discount of 8? Or does the -6 supplant the -2? Does the -6 replace the rulebook discount text or augment it. Card effects always override rulebook effects, but is this an override or an augmentation?
A: Yes, the two effects will "stack" for a total discount of 8G. Jon Palmer, "Your Clan Needs You + Clan Discount", 23 Jan 2012 - Q: Okay, so in Kolat Edition... <_<
If it is my turn and I declare an attack... May I use "Your Clan Needs You!" To bring in a personality (let's say Doji Genshin) for full, paying 1g and gain 4 honor? And then again in Dynasty Phase pay out him out again for 7g gaining 4 more honor?
Thanks!
Text: Your Clan Needs You!: Battle: If any enemy units are at the current battlefield, choose your performing Personality in one of your provinces: Bring him into play at the current battlefield, paying all costs but paying 6 less Gold. After the battle ends, if he is in play, discard all his attachments and put him face up into one of your provinces, face-up, discarding any card there.
Proclaim: Reaction: After you bring a Personality in your province with your Clan alignment into play without Clan discount, if it is your turn: Gain Honor equal to his base Personal Honor.
A: Abilities can only be used once per turn, unless a different usage limit is stated. Alex Jones, "Proclaim and Your Clan Needs You!", 3 Jan 2012 - Q: Does this mean if Fosuko is destroyed while she's been removed from the game she goes into the discard pile as a discarded card and not a dead one?
A: That is exactly what I was trying to convey.
That said, while there is no rule that a card out of play cannot be destroyed, "removed from the game" is more than just "out of play". I overextended from the case of a card out of play being destroyed to an out of game card being destroyed. That was a mistake.
I am correcting the earlier post: a card that has been removed from the game can't be destroyed. Zen Faulkes, "Your Clan Needs You! & Hida Fosuko: RftG effects", 2 Dec 2011 - Q: Does this mean that Fosuko while having been removed from the game during the battle, after the current combat segment ends is then destroyed and put into the discard pile as a dead crab?
A: No. Fosuko would be destroyed, but not dead.
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Areas_of_the_ga ... of_play.29: "A Personality who is destroyed in play enters the discard pile in the dead state(.)" Emphasis added. There's currently no rules concerning cards destroyed out of play, as it's a pretty rare situation. Zen Faulkes, "Your Clan Needs You! & Hida Fosuko: RftG effects", 1 Dec 2011 - Q: (related to viewtopic.php?f=59&t=94949 )
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Physically_mark ... Overlaying "The stack has the overlaying card’s title, stats, keywords, traits, and abilities, and any other feature the game needs to check is based on the overlaying card. The stack also inherits the base abilities of all underlying cards, even ones that have been removed. Inheriting is not an ability gain. For purposes of delayed effects on a particular card, and for effects that track whether a card remains in play, the overlaid card is considered to be the same card as the underlying card. The underlying card’s attachments, tokens, and game state, including ongoing effects, also apply to the new stack. This process does not transfer or attach anything, or begin or end any game state on a card. Specifically, existing minimums, maximums, bonuses and penalties to the underlying card’s stats will transfer to the overlaying card. "
If the personality brought into play by Your Clan Needs You and later given a delayed effect before being returned to province is overlaid instead of brought into play normally during the dynasty phase, does the delayed effect still apply?
A: Yes, the delayed effect still applies.
Although the rules you quoted don't address such a situation as the one you describe, it being a bit unusual, nothing in those rules says that such an effect would go away or be overridden. Therefore, it remains. Brook Cunningham, "Your Clan Needs You, overlaying, and effects", 25 Nov 2011 - Q: If I were to use Your Clan Needs You! to bring in a Crab Samurai, and then delay his destruction with Razor of the Dawn Castle, after the battle he would return to the Province.
A: I'm not quite sure if you are describing a scenario in which you are using Razor of the Dawn Castle in response to:
A) Your Clan Needs You! In that case, using Razor of the Dawn Castle would be illegal, because Your Clan Needs You! does not destroy anything: it discards.
B) Some other destruction effect occurring in the meantime. If that's the case... Zen Faulkes, "Your Clan Needs You! and delayed effects", 17 Nov 2011 - Q: What happens to him at the end of the turn if I then buy him in that Dynasty Phase(?)
A: It would be destroyed. All of the effects that were activated on the card are still activated (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Physically_marked_card_states, http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Effects#Effects ... ut_of_play). Just being out of play does not cause loss of card memory (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Effects#Tracking_rule). Zen Faulkes, "Your Clan Needs You! and delayed effects", 17 Nov 2011 - Q: (W)hat happens to him at the end of the turn if I instead leave him face up in the Province?
A: This one I'm kicking to the Rules Junta. Zen Faulkes, "Your Clan Needs You! and delayed effects", 17 Nov 2011 - Q: May "Your Clan Needs You!" be performed by a face-down personality?
~Andrew
A: No. You might know, because you have looked at the card with Hidden Moon Dojo, but Game State does not. Alex Jones, "Your Clan Needs You! + face down personalities.", 17 Oct 2011 - Q: [OBH] "recruit" question. Can I consider that all effects saying "bring a personality into play" actually are "recruit effect" or should I check the Oracle wording card by card to find out?
For instance: Your Clan Needs You!: I would understand it is a recruit action but I prefer to double-check here https://oracleofthevoid.com/#game=l5r,#cardid=9687
A Cleansing Death: It is explicitaly a recruit action, so no doubts here https://oracleofthevoid.com/#game=l5r,#cardid=12
Thanks in advance, Regards, Rémi.
A: Well, unfortunately, the Oracle is a bit inconsistent/incomplete. All the card wordings are modernized up to at least Emperor Edition, but Recruiting was introduced in Ivory, and only some cards are aligned to that Ruleset.
However, if you're specifically wondering if a bringing into play effect requires or waives payment, I believe they should all be explicit in the latter case. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 21 May 2026
