Rulings
- Honor loss when producing gold is an effect, not a cost. [ZF, 2 August 2000] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 78
- Q: Island Wharfs say they count as Ports. Does that mean they produce one extra gold per Marketplace, and one less per Black Market? A: No and yes, respectively. Island Wharfs have the Port trait but no other text in common with the card titled "Port". Any other card that affects or is affected by Ports, like a Black Market, works the same with Island Wharfs. Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, Version 3.6.2, May 1998, p. 14
Rules Q&A
- Q: Technically, if you use this ruling then it removes 4 corrupt holdings and black market from the SLH in Open. Geisha House, Copper, Stables, Gold, and Black Market all say "Bow and lose X honor to produce X gold."
A: Incorrect. Rules Archive, Specific cards, Holdings (E.g., Black Market): "Honor loss when producing gold is an effect, not a cost. (The card predates the uniform style indicating costs.)" Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 21 September 2003", 21 Sep 2003 - Q: My opponent with the favor cannot prevent my Black Market loss before I activate Goshiu’s ability right? That’s what my opponent wants to know. They insist they can prevent the honor loss before I can do anything
A: I believe they can. The Favor can negate any loss, not just one's own, if I'm not mistaken. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 28 Jan 2026 - Q: [Imperial]
Related to my earlier question, but with Bayushi Goshiu (not exp) and with a Black Mail being played by me and losing 3. As the active player, I can then react first with Goshiu to reflect the honor loss to my opponent. Can my opponent then react with giving up the favor to prevent the honor loss from Black Market? Or they can only prevent the honor loss from Goshiu’s ability?
@Brook Cunningham wanted to know your thoughts. Thank you
A: The player with the Favor can React to either the Black Market loss or the Goshiu loss, preventing either, but they cannot react to the Black Market loss after you activate Goshiu, because you have already lost the Black Market Honor at that point.
