Rules Q&A
- Q: I had an interesting situation in mind. It may never come up in play, but I wondered how it would turn out:
1) I'm playing Shiba Halls, just so I can stand a reasonable chance at casting Yakamo's Smile multiple times.
2) Somehow (maybe through Black Wind From the Soul or some other province destroying effect, or just actually taking provinces) I'm at two provinces and my opponent is at two provinces as well.
3) My opponent comes across and takes my last two provinces. Reacting with Yakamo's Smile, my opponent obviously chooses to blow up one of his provinces, leaving him with one. If I react and cast it again, however, I can force him into either losing his last province or giving me a new province, keeping me in the game.
My question here was whether I really have any time to actually cast Yakamo's Smile or whether once that last province was taken I lost immediately?
A: You don't have any time. Jeff Alexander, "post for 3 September 2002", 4 Sep 2002 - Q: From this thread: http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=103766
I'm under the impression that Eternal Darkness only protects its target from effects, while the destruction from Black Wind is a cost. Have I overlooked something?
A: Nope, you're right, I misread Eternal Darkness. Darned Legacy cards. Original amended. Jon Palmer, "Re: Eternal Darkness and Black Wind from the Soul", 24 Jun 2013 - Q: Hello.
reading through old accumulated rulings i saw this:
"The Unique trait on the Egg always refers to just the Egg itself. It does not create a Unique copy of the Personality it copies. In fact, an Egg-copy of a Unique Personality will not prevent another of that Personality from being played if the original dies. [netnews] "
So, does this means that a copy of a unique personality by the egg, does not carry the unique trait as a personaliy and only as the egg action card? if so, cards that can't copy abilities from unique personalities such as bayushi suboru or Ninube tsukau, will be able to copy abilities from egg's copied 'unique' personalities?.
On another subject.
Black Wind From the Soul Limited: Bow and destroy this Shugenja, and zero or more of your other performing Shugenja, such that the performers' total Chi is 21 or greater and target a province: Destroy it.
Eternal Darkness Battle/Open: Any number of times per turn, bow this Shugenja and target an Undead Personality: Any effect that would destroy him (this turn) moves him home instead and, if this moves him, bow him.
How this 2 cards interact each other if an undead shugenja uses the black scroll and its under the effects of eternal darkness. Is the destruction cost paid? retains the black scroll attached?
thanks.
A: I assume you're referring to the original Egg of P'an Ku, and not the one in Coils of Madness?
Please note that that is a very old ruling, and you'll want to use the updated Egg of P'an Ku text found on the Oracle. Since the Egg becomes a copy of the base Personality, if you copy a Unique Personality it will copy the Personality's name and Unique keyword, and therefore will prevent another Unique copy of the same card from entering play if the original dies. Cards that cannot copy abilities from a Unique card will not be able to copy it.
However, if you use the Egg to copy a non-Unique Personality, it will not become Unique despite the Egg's Uniqueness, and can be targeted as a non-Unique.
Eternal Darkness only prevents destruction effects, not destruction costs, so you can pay the cost of Black Wind from the Soul if used in that manner. Jon Palmer, "copying abilities from an egg of p'an ku unique personality", 23 Jun 2013 - Q: Hello everybody.
Black Wind From the Soul http://imperialassembly.com/oracle/#cardid=995 Limited: Bow and destroy this Shugenja, and zero or more of your other performing Shugenja, such that the performers' total Chi is 21 or greater and target a province: Destroy it. Lose 5 Honor.
Shouldn't this be "Any number of times per turn" like The Wasting Disease? http://imperialassembly.com/oracle/#cardid=8417 There are ways to return spells from the discard or keep them in play. Also, original intent.
Thank you!
A: That may be the original intent, but there may also be a reason it was chosen not to be worded that way in the Oracle. If you have a question about why a card is worded the way it is, the proper place to post those questions is in the Oracle of the Void thread, which is monitored by those who maintain it.
